Xbox 360 hackers: Microsoft remove 600,000 from Xbox Live

By: Jamie Pert | November 11, 2009 | 8 Comments

Microsoft have recently confirmed that they have banned a small percentage of Xbox Live users, this is due to the fact that they have been running modded consoles.

This small percentage is said to be approximately 600,000 users, this equates to roughly 3 percent of the current 20 million Xbox Live users out there.

To be honest I know of people who have been playing on pirated consoles for a few years now, and it surprises me more that Microsoft have taken this long to ban users, the ban was warned in our previous post here.

I think most consumers won’t complain, because lets face it the amount of money they have saved on games over the past years has probably far outweighed the cost of a new console and a couple of legitimate games.

It is thought that the ban will not completely stop the console from working, however you will be unable to connect to the Internet with it, therefore Xbox Live will not be possible, find out more on Pocket-Lint.

Do you think the action taken by Microsoft is too excessive?

I think it is way to excessive, I bought my xbox in June or July…And you mention that there have been people using modded xbox’s for years. I still used to by MS points and paid for my xbox live account, so they were still making money from the modded xbox. So now I guess I’ll trade in my xbox for PS3 since the internet there is FREE. Xbox had the fact that you can mod it more appealing, now I guess I’ll go for the better gaming console.

Your sense of entitlement amazes me. You think a company should look the other way because you still give it some money? Well, I stole $5000 worth of games, but I bought $5 worth of microsoft points, they should just be happy I gave them $5 is a ridiculous argument.

They aren’t even stopping your from using your XBox. They are just saying if you want to mod it, then you can’t go online. Very simple.

Yeh its too harsh…. I have recently been banned for havin a modded console…. I am a gamebattles pro user and I can no longer compete…. Why does it matter to microsoft if your using a modded console when at the end of the day you have to pay for xbox live…. what the hell is that all about?

Okay, i had probably 10,000$ worth of games and some games i bought. i pay for msp/live. but still even so. Microsoft cannot have kids/adults playing pirated games because, the companies that sell games will drop them if they keep getting thier games pirated. Bungie, activision, all those high up thier company’s will no longer make games for the xbox if they know about 600,000 + compies are not going to be sold…

Silly pirates, entitled to stealing/playing stolen games? Microsoft had clear terms you choose to agree with when you signed up for their service, and now you're mad cause they finally enforced them? Just because rules aren't immediately enforced doesn't mean the consequences will cease to exist. You are just mad because you're joy ride is over.

I find it funny that pirates think they are entitled to things. You aren't entitled to anything. Next thing you know, a major game dev will cancel a project because of beta piracy and the pirates will be mad because the game wont be made for them to steal. Grow up and work to support yourself and your hobbies. I bet you would love it if someone modded your pay system at work to steal money from your paychecks? And the pirates scream, "but these are big multimillion dollar companies! Microsoft doesn't need more money!" Well if you want them to continue to support the console your stealing from then yes, they do need money. Money is not an unlimted resource. Besides, what about the game studios you hurt. You may love a game but by pirating it and decreasing sales the game developer will not make a sequel because its not cost effective to produce a game that wont make any profit. So then you wont get a chance to see more of the game world you love so much.

Silly pirates, how about you get off your high horse and look at the whole picture before you justify your theft.

it's about freakin time! Modders/hackers are the reason why I don't play as much as I used to. It's ridiculous to pay tons of money on games and subscriptions only to get screwed by somebody who has too much time on their hands. Games like BC2 and RDR (my 2 favorite right now) are the most targeted, and every day I see at least one person cheating on both! This makes me wonder if other consoles/PC have this many problems with hackers.
I've reported a few people (not lightly) but I doubt it actually did any good.
