Samsung to Drop Symbian for in-house Bada

When a new product is launched, it is always at the expense of something else, this is just the case with the mobile OS market. We know that Windows Mobile is doing ok, but Symbian is not doing so well since the launch of Google Android.

Samsung know that Symbian is beginning to fall out of favor; they could have offered more handsets running on Windows Mobile or Android but have chosen a different route. According to Engadget, they have learned from DigiTimes that Samsung have announced that they are dropping Symbian in 2010 and will be backing their in-house Bada OS.

Don Joo Lee, Samsung’s senior vice president has said that Symbian is not making the cut and that Bada will be taking its place. Symbian has been facing tough competition in recent years; this latest news will come as a big blow to the Nokia owned company.

Samsung handsets have seen healthy sales in 2009, with reports of shipments being around 200 million, and according to Lee, this looks set to increase by 10 to 15 percent for 2010. The reason for this is simple, Samsung are at the forefront of launching new technologies and having an OS designed by those who make their own handsets will allow them to compete with the likes of Apple and RIM.

Samsung is already the top handset vender in the UK, US and other markets and having their own OS will help to increase that margin even more.
