Mac Mini Blu-ray drive kit: OS X doesn’t support native playback
By: Peter Chubb | November 11, 2009 | Leave a CommentThe Mac Mini has been recently revamped by Apple, but one upgrade that missed out was a Blu-ray player. However, AMEX Digital has developed a Blu-ray “upgrade kit”, which is hoped to make the Mac Mini the ultimate home entertainment system.
There is however one small problem with that, OS X doesn’t support native playback. Users will have to boot their Mac Mini with Windows 7 in order for the Blu Ray kit to work. I am not sure if I would want to put Windows 7 on my Mac Mini, I am running it on my laptop right now, and realize that it is a bit soon to be running it.
Also with OS X, you can read and write data if you have Adobe’s Premiere Pro CS3 with Encore or Roxio’s Toast along with a Blu-ray plug-in. Not the easiest solution, but at least you will be up and running in a round-about way.
Engadget, who got this article from I4U states that AMEX Digital is not clear if the kit can do those things above as they only say that the kit will only play Hollywood Blu-ray Disc movies, well as long as you are running Windows 7 on your little Mac computer.
There is one problem with this kit though, the base price for a Mac Mini is $599 add to that $199, and you are left with a computer costing $800. For the same price you can get yourself a native PC solution, even cheaper if you wait for Black Friday.
