Motorola Droid: UK release and networks still unknown

By: Alan Ng | November 5, 2009 | 21 Comments

While it’s fair to say that consumers in the U.S are literally going nuts over the launch of the Motorola Droid and Droid Eris on the Verizon network, consumers in the UK are still in the dark as to when the Droid will released over there.

As reported from Pocket-Lint, none of the major networks in the UK have confirmed that they will be carrying the Droid in the near future. O2 and 3 stated firmly that they will ‘not’ be releasing the Droid, while T-Mobile who have already tested the device, took themselves out of the equation afterwards.

However, Orange seems like a possible destination for the Droid, as they stated that they had ‘nothing to announce’ other than the fact they were currently selling the Motorola DEXT. Vodafone were unable for comment on the Droid as of yet.

Pocket-Lint states that they are currently pressing Orange and Vodafone for further information on this subject, so we’ll be sure to let you know once they do.

I am currently a T-Mobile customer using a G1. If my contract runs out now, I would DEFINITELY be willing to switch to any network that had the Motorola Droid / Milestone. The G1 is a phone with great functionality but ugly looks. The Droid is a phone with amazing functionality AND amazing looks!

For T-Mobile, who released the G1, to say that the Droid, which is almost as thin as the iPhone and has a stunning screen, is not aesthetic enough for the UK market – it just beggars belief!

I think it’d be ridiculous if all UK networks passed on what is probably the best phone of the year. The sooner the Droid/Milestone gets here the better!

  • George

Really really want this phone and it’s cool looking dock!
Which ever network picks this up will get my money!

I desperately want Droid in the UK market – and am quite disappointed at T-Mobile’s stance, given that droid + T-Mobile is really my dream combo.

I’m waiting for a UK Droid/Milestone, and although I am an existing Vodafone customer, I’ll change network or buy SIM-free it that’s what it takes to get one.

I think the Droid/Milestone has taken a few of the UK networks by surprise. They thought that buy signing up (and no doubt paying heavily) for the iPhone they were going to be in a great position, then along comes something that takes the buzz away from the iPhone and for many customers, beats it/

Gimmie gimmie gimmie! I was so sold on the hero but then the 3gs tempted me away, now I’m ready for Android again… arghh. My Nokia 3810 will just have to do for now!

  • Maciek

    This is a joke!

How come Droid – the best Android phone as of yet – can be considered not good enough?

All HTC phones up to date are fundamentally flawed – ugly, missing important features (Hero might look kinda nice, but no 3.5mm headphone jack, seriously?).

It seems like HTC is taking a lot of money under the table from Microsoft or Apple to make rubbish phones based on Android. Look at their WinMo and HD2. It’s stunning; STUNNING. Why not make a similar Android phone? It’d sell like hotcakes…

    This is all very fishy…

  • Blip

Maciek – don’t mistakenly trash the Hero for a feature it actually has. The addition of the 3.5mm jack is what moves the Hero on from previous models.

    Checks specs first!!

I’m waiting to spend money on a ‘Rola Droid, for myself and my lady.

It’s not often I find myself ‘sold’ ahead of availability, so what’s the issue with suppliers?

  • poor website

This website is lame i hate websites that disable the back button… will not be visiting here again!

  • Sparks

I’m guessing O2 especially have invested too much in pushing the holy iphone to bring out something better so soon.
    Just a guess.

  • willbxtn

Um, Maciek, I have my HTC Hero in front of my as I type, and I can say with an insanely heavy degree of certainty that it has a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Back on topic, I like the look of the Droid, and I hope, for the sake of the popularity of Android, it gets a UK carrier, but I doubt I’ll pick one up – I’m happy with my Hero, it’s unfathomably useful.

I have been asking in at Motorola UK website to no avail. I did notice the other day that expansys.com (manchester based reseller) had it listed SIM free for a while, but without pricing info. I had heard it was coming to UK in next couple of weeks via T-mobile and I am definitely interetsed.

Why are networks here reluctant to sell it? IMO, because it lacks the HTC or Motorola Dext UI as it is a “Google experience” phone so operators cannot layer on many revenue generating extras for them that would IMO be a drag for the user. But as T-mobile UK has already bitten that bullet with the G1, they are the logical network to pick it up. But I think that with advertising behind T-mobile, it will eat the lunch of many other phones, particularly the Pre and the Blackberry.

Bring it on! Reluctance by operators to meet genuine demand of users is another example of the monopoly power they have over us…….but soon enough they will be exposed for what they are…..dumb pipes.

I’m a UK Orange customer and I like what I see of the Droid so far, very interested in getting it as I’ve had the same model now for about two years (Nokia N95).

Been holding out for a handset that does the Android OS justice for a while. All the advice I’ve been given for the past few months is hold out, hold out… then finally the phone we’ve been waiting for finally arrives and the telcoms are dragging their feet… I can’t believe it!

Personally, I’ll switch to the first company that has the vision to go with it.

I want a DROID. I will accept no other phone

  • Tim Battershill

I had a dext briefly, was very good, but lacking a signal locally on orange in my area so sent it back. Will upgrade to a milestone or droid or whatever they call it here. I miss the dext was a great phone and I am hopeful the droid will be even better but still not use with with no signal. come on vodaphone.

  • Yakumo

HTC won’t see any of my money till they use OLED displays sadly. The hero and the HD2 came close though.

The Milestone includes multitouch and pinch-zoom that the Droid lacks so it’s worth making the distinction properly. Terrible name change though, not catchy or short, do they really want it called the ‘mile’ or the ‘stone’ heh.

I hope vodafone carries it as I’ve been with them a while, otherwise I’ll be moving on as it’s time for a new contract.
