Verizon’s Motorola Droid: Microsoft Exchange support and cost

By: Jamie Pert | November 4, 2009 | 2 Comments

Since initially hearing about the upcoming Motorola Droid pretty much all we have heard about the device has been positive, however according to a recent article there may be a problem with Verizon’s release.

IntoMobile’s article seems to suggest that for any users wanting to use Microsoft Exchange support it will cost them around $15 extra per month.

This is due to the fact when you are choosing your price plan you have to choose the standard contract then choose to add unlimited data, Exchange support or both, no matter what combination you choose it results in you paying approximately $15 a month for the exchange support.

Personally I feel that all data should come in one bracket (yes I know technically SMS and Voice calls are data), but in terms of Internet and Exchange I feel that signing to a data plan should cover both.

Will this put you off purchasing the handset from Verizon? Or do you think an extra $15 is OK?

Your assessment is incorrect. As explained in other articles/blogs the difference in cost is between the corporate data plan and personal. The corporate plan is $45 a month ($15 more than the personal account). It is the same for all smartphones, this doesn’t just apply to the Droid.

I believe Jim to be correct,My wife and I had just upgraded from Palm Treos to the new droids(wonderful piece of hardware)and a Verizon tech had noticed that we’ve been paying the $15 charge all along. He went on to explain that it is only needed for access to corporate networks and that I did not need this.
I’d like to write a letter of recommendation for this guy but he’d probably get fired for bringing my bill down.I bought him lunch instead.Anyway,we have all of our usual services and the Droid is a great compliment to Verizons top notch coverage,it’s about time!
On a final note, there was an AT&T refugee who came into the store for a droid and a contract,he said he was waiting for Verizon to get a decent phone because he’d already heard that Verizon had good service.
