MSN New Look: Integrated Facebook and Twitter feeds

MSN New Look: Integrated Facebook and Twitter feeds

By: Peter Chubb | November 4, 2009 | 15 Comments

Microsoft have been very busy lately, they have launched Bing, then Windows 7 and now they are planning a new look for their MSN homepage. The new look will offer some cool social networking features, such as integrated Facebook and Twitter feeds.

Normally when a website like MSN offers a new look there are only slight changes, but this new look is a major change. According to PC World, MSN have said that they made the change to get rid of all the clutter that is on the current portal as the homepage was outdated

The update is still not live, but the public have been given the chance to have a sneak peak by going to the MSN site here. Microsoft say that the new MSN homepage will go live early in 2010 and is the first stage to offer the entire MSN network a refreshed look.

The biggest change that visitors will notice is that the blue background has gone; in its place is a white background. The new homepage has also lost its trademark blue links to their own content; the overall look is sleeker and more modern looking.

I like the new look; however, I wish the local temperature was still posted at the top of the page. Often times, I want to know what the temperature is outside. That’s always been helpful to me. Other than that, it looks Great!

I don’t like it. It’s more difficult to read then before. MSN prior page had much more info with a few glances of the eye. Too much navigating, now..

I hate it. Too much white space makes it hard on the eyes. I liked the old one much better. It had a very distinct design. The new design looks like just another site.

I do not like the new look. Also, it came without warning. Nothing is where it should be (or, used to be). And the top stories seem now to be entertainment. I now need to find a new home page. Afterall, I chose the original MSN page for its “old” look and its functionality. Thanks. SH

I don’t like it. I use to be able to see everything I wanted to quickly, this new layout isn’t working for me. I liked the temperature at the top of the page too. I hope we get an option where we can choose to use the old classic view otherwise i might have to get a new home page too.

The new look just appeared–no warning, no choice. It’s crap. Previous site categorized for easy overview. I’m looking for new homepage.

I ABSOLUTELY hate it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it's hard to read and i don't like that one second it's not there and the next it is.

Don't like it at all. Really annoyed that there was no warning. Not having the option between the two and being force fed the new page will cause me to find another homepage as soon as possible.

  • paul

I absolutly HATE it as well

WHY THERE IS NO OPTION TO CHANGE BACK TO CLASSIC VIEW

I hate it. Who was in charge of this decision?
I'm finding a new homepage. Too much white. Too little infomation at a glance.

well microsoft is really busy with their work now days.. and yeah it shows they are working hard.. they really have taken much pain to remove the Vista’s pain by launching windows 7. But i m sorry to say.. they couldn’t do the same magic when it came to website designing.

As being a Web Designer @ Sanyoinc.com, It become so important for us to read and review what major players are doing.

My review for new website goes more to the negative side.

First thing i must say about new site is logo font of MSN is looking nice but they have closed wings of their butterfly too much. Its giving a completely negetive perspective in mind of viewers. this closing wings show a downfall of a company (closing indicates its closing, opening indicates spreading).

Colour scheme is good enough but too much of white irritates eyes. They should have given their new blue color (used at top) in the background too in the same manner as it was in old website (like darker one style only not color).

That big navigation channel is missing on top… now need to navigate too much (though everything is under dropdown boxes). if you compare navigation with the older design, older design wins 100 awards for navigation. Everything is in front of you at just single click.

Dropdown boxes have no separators and text is not readable well as page background is white and dropdown menu’s background is again white and that too without any border. so unable to distinguish menu and background.

LIFESTYLE section has been given much attention on the homepage. Though particulary its correct to give more fresh look to home page, but at the working desk, people are more prone to see news at a glance rather than stopping at lifestyle articles. That important news portion should be given more highlight. (or they should have given choice to viewers to customize their homepage and let people decide what they want at which location)

Weather Update: inportant feature to make me set my homepage to MSN. but its missing from its top location in new page so that may be risky for the msn.

TREND WATCH: Twitter column has been given more space then it needed. its even not much important to take this much space on MSN’s homepage.
