Duracell Mygrid Review: Another Wireless Charger

Duracell Mygrid Review: Another Wireless Charger

By: Peter Chubb | November 4, 2009 | 24 Comments

If we go back to the start of the year you would have been shocked to see a wireless charger for your iPhone, BlackBerry or other device. Now as we come to the end of the year, these products seem to be getting all the more common, the latest being the Duracell Mygrid.

The first device to start the trend of this year was the Palm Touchstone, but up to that point would only work with the Pre. The next was the Powermat; this device was different as it could charge up multiple devices at once.

The Duracell Mygrid is much like the Powermat, as you only have to place the device on the mat for it to start charging. The Mygrid supports up to 8 devices, all of which will have to use an adapter, which you slide the desired device in to.

Adapter sleeves are available for the iPhone and iPod Touch, two BlackBerry handsets, and certain models of Nokia and Motorola cell phones. It will take time for more sleeves to come available, but we are certain that they will come.

The mat looks as though it will only can only charge two devices at a time, but MyGrid state that the device can charge up to four items at a time.

What is the purpose of this thing? Are you supposed to leave those 2 things on your device all the time? Seems to me it would take less time to just plug it in to the wall.

  • Dee

I just saw an banner advertisement on Yahoo for this product, and googled it to get further information.

It appears that each product must have it's own custom sleeve – that can cost a pretty penny! – and if the writer of this article debates how many products can actually get onto the grid, well, yes – your time would be better spent just plugging it in to the wall.

Besides, quick math illustrates the obvious solution:

    Mygrid ($79.99) + 4 adapter sleeves (@ $34.99 each, assuming you would use 4 devices) + HST (13% here in Ontario) = $248.54

    vs

    An extension plug with up to 4 outlets ($5) + HST (13%) = $5.65

Again, I think the winner is obvious here.

  • Wast of time

What sort of review is this? Doesn't look like the reviewer even had the product, just made assumptions from the pictures and data provided by the manufacturer. How sad. Thanks for wasting my time.

These new mats that are suppose to be convenient are a waste of money. Most phone (and many other electronic devices) manufacturers would void any sort of warranty that you may have. To have the “convenience” of using only one outlet to charge multiple devices is not worth the money or risk of losing your warranty. My opinion is just like Dee says buy a power strip or just use another plug. The concept sounds good but it’s not very practical for the price. They are just another junk accessory that will fade out in time.

If an older person with sever arthritis in the hands is unable to plug in that tiny plug, what is the alternative? If someone has a suggestion, I'd like to hear it.

  • charley hardman

    mygrid isn’t wireless.

  • Stuart

Ray, if you have one of the supported phones, and can live with any bulk the sleeve adds, this sounds like a great solution for your case. All of those plugs, daily, must be difficult with arthritis.

  • dbs

Wow I agree. If you have to add a sleeve, then what's the point. Now you have a fatter phone. The purpose of this is to make life simpler, not more complicated. I'm very disappointed with the reviews thus far. They seem to be by the manufacturers as they avoid addressing the obvious pitfalls of all these type of charging units. I find it interesting all reviews are 'great' with no down sides mentioned. Coincidence? I think not.

You need to call Obama! A human with a brain, you could turn our country around. Thank you for responding. You’ve made me feel better about my fellow man.

  • Savage1

My son has a mat, it is not all that convinient and these things are not wireless, I won’t even go into how much they cost with all the added goodies, I say go with the surge protector plug strip

  • Dylan

To me these devices are more of a statement of how far and fast technology is advancing than an economical one. There will always be the cheaper way to go of course. (and I personally wouldn't get one of these due to the price) But you have to admit. Every time you see a brand new technology like this released, at least a very small part of you is saying "Wow, now that is cool. Didn't I see this in star trek once?" ;)

  • packer

I got one and I'm quite pleased with it. I don't find it bulky on my Samsung Galaxy S, or my wife's LG Xenon. It's simple and works. Nothing is easier than getting home and putting your phone down on a pad.

PS :When you can charge without wires it's "Wireless".

  • Chirs

I have a charging station (not wireless) that holds at least four devices. It is a nice-looking feax leather-covered thing. It cost me under $20, and the power strip inside it cost me about $5 more. All the chargers and their cords stay out of sight, and it takes a full 2 seconds to plug my phone to it. Why should I spend the kind of change this wireless thing costs? Some people will just buy any gadget that comes along (iPad users, I'm talking to you).

  • marcus

Obama has made a lot of errors in government how are you going to use him as a reference to generalize such a vast number? Manufacturers need to be compensated for the idea as well as the provider which is why new products always cost so much. And just to be clear, one $90 dollar pad can hold 4 devices which plugs into one plug instead of 4 devices using 4 plugs which lowers risk of short circuiting. Check back on how much the "Mygrid" is in a years time and you will be convinced it's cheap. $248 is the price if you buy all four different sets. and charging plugs are each for one specific device which gets frustrating when you have multiple devices with different plugs. So you end up having all sorts of different types of chargers that you can't use when you buy a new cell phone.
So yes… The winner should be pretty obvious.

  • Mel Bourne

An Ipod style charger that you seat the phone in would be a better solution for older folks rather than having to fiddle with little plugs. Mygrid is a dust gatherer in waiting.

  • Alex

Wow, I had this idea of buying my parents a mygrid but after all of these reviews I think it is pretty much useless to spend over 100$ just for a wireless charger.

  • TrinaRenee

lol…..I have to admit that there are times when I do see new products and just awe over them. Heck…I can remember getting my first cell phone in 2000 and I remember when the DVD player was brand new…now you can get one for $30 bucks. Technology is every evolving and it's evolving FAST. This device is a cool one. I like Dylan won't be buying myself one due to the price though.

  • Iman

I've read all the reviews and it seems that only a few have had a mygrid. the bads balance the goods. If you haven't tried it, its like voting, if you don't vote, you don't have any say about the outcome. Technology is growing exponentially, there are things we can and cannot afford. So for those who can afford to experiment, I say go for it. For those who can't I say use what you can afford.

  • kernalburger

Funny you should say new technology. I'm pretty sure this device charges your phone the same way your electric tooth brush charges… Induced Current. The adapter sleeve has coils in it that pick up the charge, but I could be wrong. :)

  • jeremy

Everyone I’ve seen on conversations about these dumb things seems to miss the biggest issue besides the ridiculous price or the fact its old technology. what happens when you get a call/text and your device just turned on after dying you pick it up it will die or hold this sweet mat up to your face. at least the free wall charger can be 4ft from your device AND it will still charge while you use it

  • miked

does anyone know when they will be coming out with a specific charger case for the iphone 4?

  • Gatorfan

It' a big waste of money, just use the charger that came with your phone. Some people will buy anything just to say they have it first.

  • ian

This is a device built to con idiots out of their money. It has ZERO advantages. It is not only hugely expensive it isn't even quicker or simpler. If you think this is a winner, well I think my first statement say it all.

  • brenty

what happened to the drop in chargers the manufacturer used to give you with your phone when you bought it? I havent seen one of those since about 2001…guess they went cheap on their customers huh?
