Wi-Fi Direct: Bluetooth days are Numbered

The recent news from the Wi-Fi Alliance over its plans for Wi-Fi Direct does not bode well for Bluetooth, there are some who say that this could be the death of Bluetooth and that’s its days are numbered. Wi-Fi Direct is a new wireless networking specification, devices that are enabled to use the system will be able to make contact with peer-to-peer wireless connections, all this is done without the use of a wireless router.

The number of uses that Wi-Fi Direct can be used in certainly steps on the toes of Bluetooth technology, and looks set to compete with and then end the reign of Bluetooth. PC World explains that Wi-Fi Direct or Wi-Fi peer-to-peer, which is its codename, is thought to offer Wi-Fi Direct compliant devices sometime in 2010.

Bluetooth uses its technology to allow devices to connect to each other wirelessly; these include headphones, earpieces, mice and more. There is a problem with this technology though, it has a short range and transfer speeds are often very slow.

Wi-Fi Direct will do the exact same thing but with two major improvements, a greater range and faster transfer speeds. Much the same as we now get from our current Wi-Fi connections. For full information on this technology and the effects it will have on Bluetooth, visit PC World
