Apple developing FM Radio App for iPhone and iPod Touch?

By: Daniel Chubb | October 15, 2009 | 3 Comments

Over at 9to5Mac they have received a tip-off that an FM radio application for the iPhone and iPod Touch is being developed by Apple, and it will offer the same functionality as the FM Radio function in the latest generation of iPod Nano’s.

It is believed this FM app will integrate with the iTunes mobile store, and that if you are listening to a radio station which supports tagging then you will be able to check out the details of the song right there on the spot, and even purchase it right there on the go.

Apple’s iPod’s and iPhone’s have been able to receive FM signals for quite some time now, but the function has been left dormant. According to 9to5Mac this isn’t an uncommon thing for Apple to do with their devices. Quite often they will leave technology in their devices dormant until they feel it is right to bring it to life.

i think it is quite redundant and useless to have an FM radio app for iPhone.

they already have lots of music apps and they have an iStore. the tendency would be, if people would start loving the FM radio app and would stick to it, i doubt if they would still love to go back to music players. BUT… that is IF there are STILL people who tune in to FM radio.

The reason they wait to release these features is so that they can find a way to make as much money as possible by charging more for things that should have originally come with the product. Take the memory form factors of their touch/iphones for example. Why couldn’t they integrate some sort of swappable flash memory into the touch/iphone? Because then they couldn’t sell an extra 24 dollars of flash memory for 100 dollars (i.e. 16 GB 3gs = $199 and 32GB=$399). Pretty greedy if you ask me but good for Apple if you look at it as strictly business. I would guess that Apple will charge for people to be able to use the fm tuner app.
