By: Jamie Pert | October 14, 2009 | 70 Comments

Over the last few years Wamart have became more and more competitive in a wide range of markets, usually with the aim of becoming the cheapest option, it seems that they now aim to impact the wireless service market.

Walmart have recently announced their new wireless service which they are calling “Straight Talk”, none of Straight Talk’s plans will require contracts.

It is thought that Straight Talk’s plans will start at $30 per month, and it seems that they will be offering an unlimited talk, text and web service for just $45 per month.

To become competitive in the market Walmart teamed up with TracFone Wireless, TracFone Wireless have vast experience in the pre-paid wireless market.

It is thought that Straight Talk will go live as of October 18th, the carrier will offer nationwide coverage, to find out more check out IntoMobile.

I will be looking into it, because it is so much cheaper!

  • Maddy

It is much cheaper and better than my old contract was. The phone is not as nice but it works without a problem and to be able to make unlimited calls, texts and data is really great. Straight Talk has superior network coverage because they run on Verizon’s network, nationwide.

I would never support walmart in anything they do. They’re a horrible company to work for and do nothing but rape, their workers and lie about loyalty. The offer the lowest prices because they do the most dirt to get them. Watch the documentary “walmart, the high cost of low prieces”

  • Al

I think the service looks very interesting. THANK YOU Walmart for jumping into this market-space. Oh, and Vaughn, YOU are a MORON.

I have had this service for almost a year. To be honest I have had 0 dropped calls the reception is fantastic I give it 12 stars out of 10

I first got Straight Talk back in June when the plan was $30 for 1000 calls and 1000 text + data, and thought it was a great deal. But the $45 / month Straight Talk UNLIMITED plan just topped it off!!! There’s not another plan out there right now that can even compare to this one. The fact that their signal is on the Verizon network makes all the difference. I’ve never had a dropped call or out-of-range call, which is a plus specially when you’re taking a long road trip – as was the case for this summer. We travelled more than 3000 miles from the South all the way to the Midwest – and not a glitch. As always, Wal-Mart doesn’t disappoint – now they’re carrying Straight Talk too. That’s awesome cause that’s were I shop as do most of you!!

Saw it on the news today. Going to sign my adult daughter up for this and rid her of the $120 month one phone plan thru sprint. What a bargain, and on the VERIZON network at that!! I never had a complaint about their coverage.

  • mj

Can someone explain the 30 mb of data in the $30 plan? How is it used up?

  • Sensation723

I got this service for my 11 year old daughter. Her service is o great I am going to cancel my service with AT&T to change over to straight talk. Her service is way better than my service. Her phone never drops calls and it always clear no matter where we are.

  • Corey Anders

30MB of date is anout 350 web pages. I prefer the unlimited plan for $45 a month. And I got a QWERY phone which makes it a lot easier to use — and text too!

But for me, the best thing about Straight Talk is its simplicity. I am so tired of wading through funky phone bills with mysterious charges and fees.

I really appreciate the savings, of course, but not having those awful and undecipherable bills has been a great stress-reducer.

Pure crap. Do not buy this thing. While there have been some good reports on it I’m seeing more bad and I personally had a bad experience with the whole thing. I’m normally not the type to rant and rave about how horrible something is but this product has ticked me off so bad I’m going to scream it from the rafters. Customer Service is essential regardless of crappy product. I wouldn’t have gotten nearly so angered had it not been for the horrible service.

Despite reading so many negative reviews from other customers I decided to try the service out anyways. Prior to purchasing this phone (LG290CM) and plan ($30/month) I was using T-Mobile’s prepaid sidekick service. I was paying $1 per day for unlimited internet and text messaging plus an additional $0.15 per minute of talk time. Total came out to $70+ some months with like 100 minutes. I registered the phone online and ported my number over. I had no issues and the port finalized in about 5 hours. The site gave clear instructions on how to activate the phone and I followed them exactly with no issues. Turned on the phone, great service. Talk is clear, texts are fast, and internet speed although top notch is tolerable. Obviously this service isn’t right for the person who cannot live without mobile internet but come on what do you expect. The time remaining is rather annoying, but oh well, it beats paying twice as much per month for the same service. With t-mobile I had one bar in my house, calls dropped, internet never worked and now, perfect, I can talk, text, browse with no problems. Next month I will reup with the $45 plan simply because I don’t have any issues at all. I highly recommend this service to people who genuinely need affordable wireless without a contract not for people with high expectations that no carrier could meet. To those reading these reviews and being scared away, if you follow the instructions given and give the service the benefit of the doubt you will find that this is no worse than issues with any other carrier. Example: T-Mobile just recently had a global outage of their data services that last a week and a half. It took 4 or 5 days of 2+ hour hold times before they finally put a recorded message telling customers of the issue with the explanation we are working on it and no definitive resolution date. Additionally, Verizon over charges for their service, AT&T is a joke, and well the list could go on and on. (I would have given 5 stars but the time remaining message is annoying.)

  • Dan

The phone and service is cheap, agreed. Customer service is seemingly cheap as well. Do yourself a favor – well, let me just say – “You get what you pay for.”
You can read into that statement as much as you want. Stay clear of straight talk is my suggestion.
Also, It’s all good receptions etc. I may agree, however it’s Verizon, that is why you are getting goo reception. Do yourself a favor and just go with Verizon or another reputable cell phone company.

  • MikeM

Horrible!! I just got the phone yesterday, and activated it OK but was not able to access yahoo email. I called tech support today and the second person I talked to said they were having a problem with yahoo email and that it would be fixed soon. BUT that I had been on the internet last night for 86 minutes and already used all of my 30mb of data. WHAT? I haven’t even used the internet yet. The phone was just sitting on my desk all day with the slider closed, which closes the browser/web functionality! I talked to a supervisor and he said that their wasn’t anything wrong with their system, or errors on their end, and basically he didn’t believe me. And he could not do anything about the 30MB that were gone that I did not use! WOW. So this phone is going back to Walmart ASAP! Talk about lousy service, that’s no service at all. I paid for something I couldn’t even use.

Just purchased my Straighttalk phone, so far I love it. I have always been a Tracfone customer and spent about $30.00 a month for 300 min. for talk & text so this is quite a bargain. My only complaint would be their website, I am unable to view how many minutes I have left.

  • Jeri

I called the customer service line and they dropped the time remaining before the call for me immediatly.

  • james

just got my st 5 days ago got the samsung r451c. so far the only problem i had was activating it . for some reason my serial was invalid . called customer service told me to fax a few things to them . after i did that they said that walmart misscanned it some how and that the serial is not on there system. so i went back to walmart told them to rescan it cause its not on st system. after they rescanned it everything went well. i have the unlimited plan for 45 bucks. beats my previous bill which was $115 with verizon . i mainly text and check my facebook and this phone does what i need it to do . k the only thing i dont like is the choices of phones wish there were more . there are rumors about st getting a samsung touch phone soon hope thats true cause im getting it once it hit store shelves. if your into hitech gadgets then st aint for you . if you all you want is a cheap plan with unlimited minutes and text and web then straight talk is for you . like i said before i was paying $115 a month now im paying only $45

30 mb on $ 30 plan to use mms and almost 100 webpage visit and use

  • don

sorry but i think you are…..not walmart..

  • Chase Winters

This is the BEST deal around and having it run on Verizon’s network for such a low price is amazing!

Why ever sign a contract to use a phone?

  • Chase Winters

It’s awesome! I’m very happy with Straight Talk and am impressed with their coverage on Verizon.

To me, the $30 – 1,000 minutes, 1,000 texts deal is unbeatable. I travel and have never had a problem.

When I had Metro POS, it worked fine in town but as soon as I got outside the city, fuhgeddaboutit!

You get what you pay for, on in the case of Straight Talk, MORE than you pay for!

  • Jets

Its not Walmart. It is Tracphone. Walmart just sells it, and helped to support it.

  • DancingQueen

I just got this service for my teenage son’s birthday and I signed him up for the $45 unlimited calls/texts plan and he loves it! It saves me a great amount of money and not to mention… NO MONTHLY CONTRACT :)

Since Straight Talk is on the Verizon network, his phone gets great coverage and it keeps me connected with him. I’m so happy Walmart fully took up this great service!!!

When I got the RAZR back in August it took days to port the number from Verizon and Customer Service was difficult to deal with. Limited hours/difficult to understand and they read from scripts.

I originally had the ST RAZR V3 and it was OK. The yahoo mail app stopped working and was a known issue. I upgraded to the Samsung R451C and it ported from ST to ST within minutes and now yahoo mail works. I prefer this phone because I was able to add the Micro SD card and use the MP3 player and move files to/from computer easily. Also, browsing is easier on this phone than on the RAZR. No video camera but for the price you can’t beat it. Customer Service is difficult to deal with but for $30 I can handle that too. They have expanded their hours and are now open on the weekend. When I got my first phone they were only M-F.

$30 a month and no added fees other than my states sales tax is a great deal.

  • Just Being0

I ordered the 1000-minute package almost a mouth ago. The phone service is alright, and the mobile web it also okay. But beware of it’s refill! I kept getting refill reminders from the company, and the Walmart close to my home ran out of the refill cards, so tonight, I went to Straight-Talk website to refill my account, although my service would expire on 12/19 (it’s 12/16 today), and I still had several hours left. I thought my new service period would start from 12/20 (or 12/19), but I was told that the next expiration date for my service will be 1/15! So, I’ve lost 4-day worth service! This is a ripoff! So, be careful when to refill. Then, there is another catch: the refill would take effect in up to 4 hours!

I switched from $print to Straight Talk (www.straighttalk.com) last week and have been completely impressed. They offer LG, Motorola and Samsung and I bought the cute, cedit-card size, cheapo LG100C (US$ 29.95) with the $30 plan and ported my number. Straight Talk is up front about a potential 7 to 30 day wait to port a number. I was prepared to sit through it and pleasantly surprised as service went active in under 24 hours. Very impressed actually. Technojunkies likely won’t be satisfied with their yester-year phone selection, however, I appreciate their affordability in case of loss and breakage (when angry I throw things about). I can switch phones anytime as they offer 8 models. Try that with $print and it’ll cost a fortune as they tie you down for 2 years with an upgrade. For 4+years I endured a lousy $print signal at home, joking that if I had a heart attack I’d have to go to the other room to call for help. Straight Talk utilizes Verizon in my area, a strong signal. Other $print disappointments such as, they wouldn’t honor my Berkshire Hathaway Employee discount when I switched to 200 min basic plan, they wanted extra for nights to start at 7pm, and charged for every text message. Did I mention they renewed a 2 year contact? Good grief! I was thoroughly unhappy with $print, feeling no bond or loyalty, it was time to go. I paid their $140 contract cancelation fee. Not knowing much about Straight Talk, I debated changing for two weeks and switched as $print billed a new cycle. Straight Talk charnged $33 (tax & fee incl) and Internet is included. Day 2 I checked my balance online and found they doubled minutes, from 1000 to 2000, and internet from 30MB to 60MB. Yesterday I signed on for recurring ‘Auto Refill’ (can use a credit or debit card) and after 12 consecutive billings they’ll give a free service month… do the math. On calling Straight Talk Tech Support, I had a long wait on hold. When I got a live person she alternately and politely apologized and thanked me repeatedly, which made the call longer. If you’ve used Tracfone in the past you know their Tech support is poor and they are Tech Support for Straight Talk but it’s much, much better. Walmart must have a performance clause with them. It bothers me not that this is a Walmart marketed product either as I’m a child of the ‘Walmart generation’, raised by parents who didn’t have alot of money. Every wireless provider’s weakness seems to be Customer Service and Tech Support, where Straight Talk could greatly improve. Still I highly rank their service for affordability and value received.

  • http://www.straighttalk.com Nuclear Option

Followup Post. Well I hit my first snag with Sraight Talk but I’m not deterred or even greatly disappointed. I thought I would followup because it will correct one point in my original review. I noted on Day 2 I checked my balances and my allotments had doubled, which they had. What I hadn’t realized, until I saw my online credit card statement, was when I signed on for ‘Auto Refill’ the system immediately charged me for a month. The system did not tack on an additional 30 days to my usage though. I called Customer Service and explained and it was a poor experience… without alot of details I will say I quickly realized after the hearing the word ‘delete’ several times that I might ‘incidentally’ have my service disconnected if I pursued getting a credit, potential of losing my phone number that I’ve owned since 1997! I quickly checked my temper, weighed my options, and told the tech to pretend as though I had never called. I told her I didn’t want a credit on my credit card that I was probably wrong and she was more than happy to end my call. All I can say is, after dealing with $print for years, having them botch my service on a couple of occassions I felt sure Straight Talk could make my life miserable if I pursued the credit. Here’s what you need to know when you activate your NEW service. Buy the prepaid card and have it ready to load. Then WAIT until your 29th day before you enroll in ‘Auto Refill’, to should save you the $30 problem I encountered. No where on Straight Talk’s site does it caution you on this. I think it is safe to say that once you put your credit card on their site you must be prepared to wait till the 29th day of your current plan to make any changes, including updating to a new credit card #. So, how is my experience with them so far? Still terrifically impressed with paying only $30/month.

    really bad service

  • Kat

Got straight talk for Christmas, with the samsung sliding phone, and I love it. I got it activated very easily in just a few minutes (no problems online or with cs by phone) and was talking and texting and browsing the web a few minutes after that. I think it’s an incredible deal; I have the $30 plan. And that way more than fulfills my needs. Everyone in my family paying insane contracted fees now wants to switch to straight talk lol. Can’t say I blame them. All of these features for only $30-$45 (no taxes, fees, etc.), and it’s on verizon’s network, so I’ve had no issues with reception.

    Update 30 Days

Still very much enjoying Straight Talk 30 days out. I live in a somewhat medium-size town of 53,000 an hour east of a large metropolitan area and call strength, call quality continues to be excellent. Had I known the Verizon network was this good I might have replaced $print long ago. If you’re considering Straight Talk, review the coverage map for Verizon to be prepared for what you’ll get.

My cheapo LG100C does not have a reminder of when service will end and the ‘Buy Time’ feature reads unavailable. One would need to be careful in this situation if they’re not using Auto-Refill to extend service every 30 days or purchase a prepaid card in advance. If you use the prepaid card you may be tempted to renew a day ahead meaning you’re paying every 29 days instead of every 30.

The data package is suits my needs, checking weather and headlines, though it’s slowness resembles $print.

I haven’t seen it mentioned afore but anyone who needs a paper printout of their monthly charges be advised you will not get one. There is no tracking or billing record of any sort. In fact, the website only provides your remaining alottment for minutes/text/data. I recall signing up for utilities and they required a recent phone bill.

I continue to enjoy Straight Talk for $33 every 30 days. I challenge anyone to show me a better deal. If your needs are modest, if you’re on a budget, if you need that second phone line, if you’re fed up with contracts and broken promises, give yourself a Straight Talk phone and see for yourself. For the very picky and demanding, you might prefer to stay your course. Keep overpaying your current provider, something you can count on each month :)

  • http://www.straighttalk.com Nuclear Option

For anyone who is considering Straight Talk, you’ll be on the Verizon network. Check out their coverage before you buy.

  • http://www.straighttalk.com Nuclear Option

This is a keen concern. If you don’t have a credit card then you’ll need to advance purchase a prepaid card from Wal-mart. If you wait until the day your service is to expire you might wish to call the 800# to type in your pin. The Straight Talk website performance is somewhat unreliable so I would beware of that mode of entry.

My LG100C does not state the end of service date either, as other prepaid phones provide it.

  • http://www.straighttalk.com Nuclear Option

    .
Folks need affordable phone service and the choices are limited. Mega companies like $print overchage and underservice their patrons.

Though you seem to have a personal gripe with Walmart, remember people can choose to work someplace else. Walmart employs 1.2 million worldwide so they must be doing something right. Going to a website dedicated to attacking one company is not going to give anyone a better perspective.

Don’t be bitter, life is too short. Live your life as best you can. Good luck to you Vaughn.

  • http://www.straighttalk.com Nuclear Option

MJ, I have the $30 plan with 30mb of data and use it weekdays for about 5 to 15 minutes on my towns local news site to see weather, read headlines. I’ve used 4 mb in my 1st 30 days of service. 30 mb doesn’t seem like much if you like ringtones! You would want to go with the $45 unlimited usage plan if you have any doubts.

  • DaraR

Straight Talk is absolutely amazing. I was paying 100 bucks a month with my iphone and while i LOVED it.. I switched to the Samsung Finesse and it is almost the exact same thing! And I pay 45 dollars a month now for unlimited texting, minutes, and data. It just is a no -brainer to me and I wish I switched earlier. I have been saving soooo much money!! Plus the service is on the verizon network ( which we all know has the best coverage) so I never have to worry about my service going in and out.

  • joe mc

Excellent! We got one for my wife last night and we activated it online. WAY EASY TO DO! Her old Cricket number was ported over in less than 10 minutes. I went and got one today and ported my AT&T number over in just a few minutes, also online. The coverage is better than both of those former carriers and we couldn’t be happier! We both got the basic LG220CM since neither of us are power users… just voice and text. Good sturdy phone and lots of features that we’ll never use. I particularly like the Bluetooth so we can just send our address books back and forth between the computer to keep them updated and backed up.

  • globaljuju

This company is a total sham. When I entered my zip code on their web site, they said three models of their phone would work in my area. I went and bought a phone and a $45 card. Of course when I got it home to the Navajo Reservation, it didn’t work. I called the company and talked for a long time to the service rep. He told me I could return the phone, but not the card. He said to return the phone, and then I should call Straight Talk back, and they would send me a check for the refund. When I called them back, they had no record of my call or the phone. They said that when I returned the phone, all record of my dealings with the company were erased, including the online account I had made with them! So they got my $45, and I got jacked. I am soooo going to the BBB!

  • BlueBass

The unlimited plan, in my opinion is really the best plan out there. For $45 a month, you get unlimited texts and unlimited talk time. No contracts, no startup fees, and great customer service. Really, you cant ask for anything more. Tracfone is really up and coming and really holds its own against the better known companies. I used to be a die hard Sprint user. Now, there is no way I would switch to any other provider. Tracfone Straight Talk ALL THE WAY!

  • Pat Yoe

I have Straight Talk on the Verizon network. Bought it at Walmart and it’s an amazing deal. The Samsung Finesse is a very cool smartphone and paying only $45 a month for unlimited everything is the best deal going!

  • Kimberly

I have Straight Talk and I have yet to have a problem with the service. I switched over for the $45 unlimited deal since I was tired of paying overage fees, pages of bills, and nearly $50 more a month. I charge the phone each month, get exactly what I pay for, and don’t deal with any contracts. I was able to keep my number without a problem from a previous carrier and I have much better service on the Straight Talk Verizon network. Mainly, the bargain is why Straight Talk works for me. I just moved out and Straight Talk saves me $50 a month and $1,200 over the next two years I would have had my contract. I never thought prepaid would work for me, but Straight Talk has converted me.

  • ANGELIOUS

    VAUGHN,
I HAVE HEARD STUPID FOOLS LIKE YOU TALK ABOUT “WALMART” BEFORE,WHEN ALL WALMART DOES IS MAKE THINGS AFFORDABLE FOR PEOPLE WHO OTHER WISE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO.
NOT TO MENTION THE AMOUNT OF LOW INCOME PEOPLE THEY HIRED,BUT THERE WILL ALWAYS BE PEOPLE LIKE YOU IN THIS WORLD WHO WANT TO LOOK DOWN ON OTHERS.
IN MY EYES YOU ARE JUST A LITTLE MAN.
    NO DISRESPECT TO LITTLE PEOPLE.

  • nfisherman

Vaughn has a valid point, I also find it difficult to Support anything Wal-Mart has. There is a reason, they treat employrees poorly, giving the majority of them 32 hours or less so they do not get benefits. Wal-mart is the biggest importer of goods made in China. Just go to Wal-Mart and try to find things made in the good old USA, you will find a few things, but not much! As far as employees having a choice of working there, come on, now days you can’t even buy a job! People work for Wal-Mart because there is no better place to work that is hiring. What are you going to do, wait for Obama to hire you?, He keeps saying “New jobs”, hell I want the old jobs! They were fine, paid good and had benefits too, but they are all now in Mexico, or China, and its a hellofa commute to Green Bay, Wisconsin! I know that we are forced by economics to shop at Wal-mart, they are the cheapest place to get stuff, cheap stuff, shoddy workmenship, and just plain crap, but what ya gonna do, we havent had a raise in 3 years and are living in 2010 with 2007 income. So, all you folks that shop at Wal-Mart, read the tags of what your buying, and if its made here inUSA, feel good about it, your keeping an american in work. Now, if it says made in China, then your kicking an American hard working man thats trying to support wife and childeren. Buy American when ever possible, Keep Americans at work! I mean, legal Americans, those of us, born here or legally naturalized and pay taxes for the crappy roads we have and the over paid Politicians.
I am done with my soap box now, feel free to express your opinion!

  • jane23

I’ve been using Straight Talk now for almost four months. And this was by far one of the smartest moves EVER! I realized that Straight Talks unlimited plan for $45 and no contract really was the plan that worked best for me. I travel a lot and try to keep in contact with my family as much as possible, so as you can imagine, my bills are usually high and I tend to go over minutes ALL THE TIME. With this plan I don't worry about minutes and I have great coverage (from what I hear, Tracfone uses the Verizon network, so its a BIG PLUS). For anyone looking for a new plan, I highly recommend checking them out and seeing what they have to offer. Plus it saved me soo much money so even when I had to cancel my big money cell phone contract— I STILL SAVED! It’s just so worth it its ridiculous!

  • obento

I have the samsung 451 ,, nice phone always works,,,,, but web surfing is sooo slowwww, cumbersome, just about useless
anyone else have this problem? are some phones faster than this one?

I Cant even imagine why anybody could complain about this service. Lets list the up sides to Strait Talk: 1.Unlimited everything for a extreamly cheap $45 a month. 2. A good selection of up to date very popular phones. 3. Free 411 service. 4. Friendly customer service without waiting on hold for 2 hours. 5. No unpredictable hidden charges. 6. No yearly contract to worry about. 7. Easy to refill prepaid phone cards. 8. Working mobile internet without paying $30-$60 extra a month. 9.Great! Nationwide coverage. 10.Fast, easy, reliable texting. This service is well worth dropping your overpriced service and picking up a strait talk plan. I can not find one single problem with this service and Highly recomend the switch. I can truely say Walmart has created the easiest most convinient phone plan out to this day. 20 stars out of 10. Im am thrilled with the service.

  • EricCapote

I completely agree with Travis. The upsides definitely outweight the downs with Straight Talk (actually, I have yet to experience any negatives w Straight Talk. I have read some comments about bad customer service with Straight Talk, but honestly, I have yet to experience them. WHen I've called, the longest I spent waiting for a rep was about 5 minutes, and when I finally got on the phone with them, they were VERY courteous and took care of my issue IMMEDIATELY! I can't say the same for the representatives of other companies (looking at you metro) where I have talked to a person face to face and had to stop myself from getting nasty. As for the internet, mine has been running pretty smoothly. No complaints on my behalf and I am a big advocate of the company. Keep it up TracFone!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=780925211 Kimberly Gomez

I have to say that after so many negative comments, I am still very happy with my Straight Talk service. I haven't had any of the customer service issues and the whole activation process couldn't have been easier. In terms of service, I think the ST Verizon network is fast and reliable and that is more than I can say for more "established" service providers. The internet on my phone is plenty fast and with few errors. In fact, the customer service issues I had with my previous company were much worse than anything I have read concerning Straight Talk. I will continue to recommend Straight Talk to friends and family who want an inexpensive and reliable way of staying in touch.

  • Dana

My daughter and I both bought Straight Talk phones from Walmart a few days ago. My husband activated them on the computer and we were able to keep our original cell numbers. So far my $39 ST phone has worked fine, but my daughter's more expensive $79 ST LG slider phone has been malfunctioning. Since she has had it, it drops calls frequently and she cannot transfer her pictures to her computer. She now wants to go w/ another contract cellphone co. How would we know if the problem lies with the phone, or with the Straight Talk network? We are upset about this and do not see that there is a solution other than throwing it in the trash if the problems continue!

  • Michael

I have been working with a client who has been struggling with this phone company for over 3 weeks trying to get a service issue resolved. The company has been so un-coperative and blatantly non-compliant that it borders on criminal fraud. Furthermore, it appears the Debit Card that was used to consumate the transaction was comprimised and their accounts were cleand out. Luckily, the financial institution involved halted all transactions and reinstated account balances, yet it leaves the question unanswered wether this organization can be trusted. Since the questionable transactions were accross the country, this constitutes federal wire fraud and will be reported to the FBI and investigated to the full extent possible. Walmart, the company providing the retail outlet for this service has been equally unresponsive to the customer's requests. This is a sad situation for the customer; it should be a public embarassment to Walmart, and Straightalk should close up their business because they obviously have absolutely NO comprehension of the "Customer Service" concept. Let this serve as a warning to ANYONE considering dealing with Straightalk or Walmart. Buyers BEWARE !!!!!

  • Cameron Moore

The customer service has to be the worst I have ever run into. Except to spend frustrating hours on the phone wanting to choke the rude staff as the place you on hold again and again with no chance of a resolve.

hahaha, did you guys enjoy your straight talk phone the other day when verizon's service was down? ooooh boy…..hahahaha

Listen, People are simply going to complain about everything, it's in their nature.

You can't buy a Kia and expect it to run like a Lexus.

Straight Talk benefits the consumer, not the other way around, and with so many people dropping their service and coming over to ST, it's only a matter of time before the BIG 4(Sprint, T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon) start to feel the effects and lower their prices to also benefit the consumer. The same thing happened when Net Flix and Red ox came into the Dvd market, it made Blockbuster, and Hollywood Video take notice.

So, in short, the service is great and you can't beat $45 for Unlimited, stop complaining, if a $39 phone doesn't work, IT COSTED $39!!!! SIMPLY BUY ANOTHER ONE AND MOVE ON!!!

Don't do it! Terrible customer service. I spent hours on tech support calls only to determine I got a defective phone. They won't pay for shipping to return it and I'm having trouble getting the airtime I bought refunded. Horrible, frustrating experience.

We switched our two cell phones from Verizon to ST beginning of July. We shied away from refurbished phones becuase I had read some horror stories about number transfer to those. Both my husband and I had done quite some research before deciding to switch and we felt we knew what we were getting ourselves into. I went to my local Walmart and told the sales associate which phones to get me from the locked shelf. I also had to pay right there at the cell phone counter. What I didn't know until today was that I was sold tow straighttalk phones that didn't run on the same network. I also hadn't read anywhere that Straighttalk uses more than one network. I had only heard that they used Verizon. The sales associate at Walmart didn't know or pay attention that the same model phones are sold in different variations depending what network you want to use it with. This may not matter to you but it mattered for us. My husband spends quite a bit of time in a local community where only Verizon cell phones work.

My number transferred within an hour of the activation process and I have happily been using my ST phone ever since. "By accident" I had bought a phone with the hardware to run on Verizon, something we assumed was standard. So the number transfer also was very quick because it happened inside Verizon. My husband "by accident" received a phone that runs on T-Mobile and AT+T. His number transfer took days and a number of calls to cs… When finally activated it worked fine in most places but he finally determined today that it doesn't run in that community where he needs it for work. Someone in cs finally figured out why my phone works in that community but his doesn't. This evening he went back to Walmart, fortunately it was still within the 30days of purchase and exchanged the phone for the same model but abel to run on Verizon. The Walmart associates said I should have never been sold two phones that run on different networks, the associate should have alerted me to that discrepancy. But they took care of the exchange and he is on the phone right now with cs twisting their arms to make this transfer go through tonight.

So PLEASE make sure you know which network you want to have your ST phone run on, if it matters to you at all. Then make sure you talk to a knowledgeable associate or manager when you buy your phone at Walmart, someone who knows the right letter combination after the model number that indicates the correct technology for the desired network. We will stay with ST if this can be ironed out now, there were no other problems. But yes, cs is not good.

This is the most God awful prepaid phone service on earth. It took me a week to get a phone number; when my prepaid time ran out, they didn't notify me like they said they would and they cut off my service. When I called to find out what happened, they said I would have to reinstate my phone service with them and that they couldn't guarantee I would have the same number. I would have to wait another week for a new number, etc. In addition, their customer service representatives barely understand English and can hardly speak English. I returned to Verizon — within minutes I had my Verizon account up and running again. Stick with the brand name pros — AVOID THIS PREPAID "SERVICE" LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!!!!!

I have had this service for six months. It is a great value for the price; however, its not worth the headache and the hassle you go through each month buying a service plan. The customer service reps are like robots reading the cue cards to yo. Each time you call in you have to expect to be on the phone at least 30 minutes minimum. Straight talk debited my account 7 times for a one time charge and keeps giving me the run around about reversing the fees back on my card. This is NOT WORTH the dollar at this point. If you are not following up on your account, this could be easily missed.

I have had nothing but problems with this service! The customer service is impossible to communicate with. After activating my phone, it still showed up as inactive. After calling to inquire, they kept transferring my call and then changed my phone number amidst everything (updating hundreds of contacts with my new number was annoying enough!) Then after a week my voice mail wouldn't work and my phone became inactive again, so I had to muster up the patience to call again, and had to purchase my 3rd $30 activation card in less than a month (which they have no way of refunding). I am livid. >:[

Walmart sucks… nobody should have their service, i hear it is terrible and there are always isues with everything.

  • Richard

Had an existing ST phone but with very primitive features so purchased a new GSM phone with new SIM card. Called ST to upgrade phone, instead they deactivated old phone and new phone SIM card and said to wait up to 7 days without any service event though I purchased a new PIN card. What a joke. The customer service had to place me on hold almost 30 times to go back and forth to relay what I was saying and to relay what they were saying to me. After spending almost half day and the customer service kept repeating the same thing over and over again and not understanding what I was saying, I got no where. The customer service said that the new SIM card will be mailed to you and you have to wait meanwhile without service with both new and old phones useless. Absolutely horrible service, very unreliable. I feel sorry to have gone for ST.

SO so much cheaper! $45! Unlimited talk time! Great service and coverage! Who could ask for more?

  • ritz

This is very valuable information for any future Straight Talk customers. Just make sure you know who your coverage will be with before you purchase. What I find these days, is that cs for any company is becoming harder to deal with. But, in my opinion, the money you save on your cell phone budget, will make up for it. Glad Walmart was able to make good on your purchase. Would like to know how this has worked out…better service? Will say, that of the prepaid cell phone providers, ST seems to offer the best and most usable plans, especially the Unlimited plan. You can't please everyone, but they sure to try!

Straight Talk has some pretty old phones but really it's all about the value. If you are a price-first consumer then Straight Talk is the only thing that really makes sense. You get unlimited everything including data for the absurd low cost of 45 bucks per month, which is like half of the average cell phone bill and it never drops a call thanks to the fact that it uses the Verizon and ATT towers for service. Recommended unless you're in the iPhone set.

  • rvaldez789

Yeah, people, comparing Straight Talk doesn't make much sense because iPhone is high-end and they sell Straight Talk at wireless. But if you're on a budget (who isn't, really?) and want to not have to worry about dropped calls and hidden fees while still getting an unlimited everything plan then you need to call Straight Talk right away.

  • Mary

I am getting out of this $100 a month contract with ATT. I know people that have straight talk and have had no problems at all. I really don't know where half of these people complaining are from. I live in northern Wi and yet they have coverage. I will love paying 100 for 3 months or even two. I have to pay 150 to get out of Att contract, I hate ATT so much. Every few months new charges are added, my phone goes to crap so easily and yeah the internet does not work half the time.

  • Kimberly

ST has the WORST CUSTOMER service I have ever had the misfortune to encounter. the phones are cheap, they looses calls, half the time will not charge. You get what you pay for. If you dont mind no service for 5 days and dont care to spending SIX HOURS A DAY on the phone with the customer service, you should be fine.

  • wyeoak444

Definitely agree with most of the reviews on this site, I switched to the Nokia E71 a few weeks ago because I couldn't afford to keep dumping 120 bucks down the drain on my old iPhone. It's not nearly as fast and it's missing a lot of features that I used to use but it has the same basic functions and is great for email, which is very important to me. The fact that it costs only 40% of what I used to pay is what I love the most though :)

I recently got on the prepaid train and so far I'm not disappointed. I did research on pre paid plans and found Straight Talk to be the best, in the sense that you're getting the most for your buck. The plan I chose gives me unlimited minutes & unlimited text (no contract)…these were crucial features for me. So far, I like it. I've heard their customer service isn't so great, but thankfully, I haven't had to deal with them yet…crossing my fingers I will never have to! :)

I was very satisfied with service for the past year until the last month or so, july 2011. I now can no longer receive service inside my house. I have to walk outside in the 100 degree heat to talk, and it is very embarassing., People think I am avoiding them because I don’t answer my phone. I live in south central Georgia
