With the music download business pretty much all booked up, who would have thought that there would be space enough for one more big business to stick its foot in the door…. Well apparently Sky does.
Sky has confirmed that its newest service ‘Sky Songs’ will go live on the 19th of this month to UK users, and it will offer over four million DRM-free tracks from a whole variety of independent labels.
There will be two service subscription options, one being a £6.49 monthly subscription which will allow the user unlimited music streaming as well as being able to purchase individual tracks for 65p each or £6.49 for an entire album, the second option is a £7.99 monthly subscription to be able to download one album or 15 tracks per month, along with unlimited streaming offered in the other option. Sky will be offering one free album download to all its broadband customers who sign up to the service.
The service is expected to rival such services as iTunes and Spotify. According to Sky’s chief operating officer, Mike Darcey, “Sky Songs will reach out to consumers who want legitimate digital services offering choice, ease of use and great value”. Most music subscription services offer very much the same service. These companies are missing the concept. Offering a monthly subscription service and then asking customers to pay for downloads in addition to their subscription is poor. What I would like to see is a company offering a monthly music subscription service where you can download unlimited MP3 DRM free songs without any additional cost. Come on someone take the initiative. It could make you a fortune.
