Hummer Sale: The History Behind The Brand

Hummer Sale: The History Behind The Brand

By: Peter Chubb | October 12, 2009 | Leave a Comment

The recent news that General Motors Corp. (GM) has sold its Hummer brand to China’s Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company was a sad day for Americans. The Huffington Post believes that California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger will have a tear in the corner of his eye, as his vehicle of choice will no longer be American made.

It was Schwarzenegger who helped make the military HumVee into a civilian vehicle. The consumer version of the monster-sized trucks was sold through GM dealers back in 1992, but since the $150 million deal, this has all come to an end.

The first Hummer for civilians was the H1, as we know was based on the military HumVee (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle). There were to be newer version, the H2 and H3. These were different in a way that they were not based on the HumVee; instead, they were based on GM pickups.

For owners who love their Hummer, you really need to go up and shake the hand of Schwarzenegger. If it were not for him, we would not have had these awesome beasts on our roads, and it was all down to him seeing military convoy of HumVees on the road back in 1989.
