BT recently announced that they were to double the amount of homes that will be able to receive super-fast broadband, which will allow users to gain access to the next-generation of web services. We now do more on the Internet than we have any done, such as playing online gaming on an Xbox 360 or PS3. We also download more music and movies than ever before, which require faster speeds.
BT is to spend £1.5 billion to offer 2.5 million customers speeds of up to 100 megabits per second. This will be done with the use of fiber optic cables; this means that a cable will be run directly to your door. By 2012, BT will offer fiber connections to around 10 million, but most of these will have to be connected to cabinets.
This will not come as any comfort for those living in the countryside, as most BT customers living in the countryside do not have access to standard broadband. The Rural Coalition, a countryside group has begun to put pressure on politicians so that they can begin to receive a better broadband service.
The Prince of Wales wrote in The Daily Telegraph last week, saying that the countryside was being left in the slow lane when it came to essential services, one of which was Internet. The Government has said that everyone in the UK will have broadband speeds of up to 2 Megabits per second (Mbps) by 2012. We will just have to wait and see if this actually happens.
