Sprint HTC Hero: Are you a Best Buy Reward Zone member?

By: Peter Chubb | October 10, 2009 | 3 Comments

There is not much we have not said about the upcoming release of the Sprint HTC Hero, which we know will be released tomorrow, October 11, 2009. We even covered the fact that the handset will be made available early through online telesales. So if you are a Best Buy Reward Zone member, then you are in luck.

If you signed up for this, then you would have been able to purchase the Sprint HTC Touch yesterday, two days before the general release. Engadget said that if you did not take up a clerks offer about a Reward Zone card, then you would have missed out getting your hands on the handset early.

In a recent post west discussed some of the key areas of the HTC Hero from Sprint. The handset is being sold for $279.99 on a two-year deal; this also includes a $100 mail-in-rebate. Just remember that this is Sprint’s first Android phone, so is expected to do very well as loyal Sprint customers want to get in on the Google Android party.

The HTC hero comes packed with all the latest features that you find in most smartphones, such as a 5-megapixel camera, GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth. Let us know if you managed to get your hands on one of these handsets early.

I had a horrible experience today at the Best Buy in West Covina, CA. After hearing all of the news about the early sales event, I called the store that I preordered from (West Covina) and confirmed that all I needed to bring was my Reward Zone card. Long story short, the ‘Customer Service Manager’ and the person who was referred to as ‘being in charge’ chose not to sell me the phone despite having my Reward Zone card in hand.

I was told that I had to have the coupon because they needed something to scan…otherwise it would compromise their relationship with Sprint. Really??? Additionally, I was told that the promotion was for ‘selected’ Reward Zone members – though neither Best Buy employee was able to indicate what the selection criteria was. They showed me the internal memo which clearly stated that employees could simply go to the employee toolbox to print a coupon for customers who either could not print or forgot their coupons. I also did not see any reference to any specific type of Reward Zone member or criteria. It simply said that the promotion was available to Reward Zone members. I pointed this out and the two employees basically dismissed my points and indicated that they weren’t attorneys… It was written in plain English – not many ways to interpret it.

Conclusion – I wasn’t able to purchase the phone…as the two Best Buy employees I dealt with used their discretion to refuse selling to me. I will be on the phone with Best Buy corporate to try to clear this up. Something definitely doesn’t seem right here… I am not pleased that I wasted my time after having confirmed over the phone that I could just show my Reward Zone card and was essentially spoken to like a person who was trying to ‘con’ Best Buy. Seriously, I was just trying to purchase a phone when I was told I could purchase it…

I got my HTC Hero Friday at 10′ish AM at the Best Buy in Woodbridge, VA. I had pre-ordered on Wednesday. Sales staff were terrific..there was a line, and it took a while since the phone was not properly entered into their computers. Staff kept apologizing for having to call in and for the delay, but I think us impatient people caused te delays. LOL

First impression after 22 hours. Very impressive. I was going to buy whatever the first android phone was sold with Sprint’s network anyway. I really got lucky.

It is more than I hoped for – added some apps and actually did some decent work on it. Speeds are better than reviews. So far…we all know that everything seems slow after a while – you get used to a certain speed and then you want more.

The screen is beautiful – sharp and clear. The volume is better than the Palm Pre. I am one happy owner.

I got mine a the Oceanside, CA store. I pre-ordered it Wednesday, with no coupon. The first employee had no knowledge or, well, anything (lots of temps there). The lead took over, found the email, and took my name and $50. The $50 was just a gift card purchase.

I came back Friday, and they didn’t have my name on a phone. I was SOL. I calmly explained what I did on Wednesday, and the actually took a name off a different phone, and sold it to me. They even tossed in a $30 car charger for free. Activation took nearly an hour, as the automated system didn’t want to work. They did it over the phone, and it all worked out in the end.

They have very few phones, and in the middle of my process someone came in who had travel a bit to buy one. She was told they didn’t have any more, and didn’t know when they’d get any more in. Perhaps a week, or two. Anyone expecting to buy one on Sunday should call ahead. This girl did, but it was sold during her journey there.

So thanks to Nikki, and all the folks at the Oceanside Best Buy for helping me out. And boy am I glad I didn’t buy the Palm Pre instead. This rig is FAR better built. It’s like BMW vs Chevy.
