Maemo 6 to support Capacitive and Multitouch Screens

Maemo 6 to support Capacitive and Multitouch Screens

By: Jamie Pert | October 9, 2009 | 3 Comments

When it was announced that Nokia’s N900 handset will be running the Linux-based Maemo OS it received a mixed reaction, this was mainly because current versions of Maemo did not support capacitive or multi-touch screen technologies.

However it has now been confirmed that Maemo 6 will be Nokia’s first Linux base OS which will support both capacitive and multi-touch screens, however this will not be available for a while.

It is thought that Maemo 6 will not be available for at least a year, which means N900 users will have to cope without the support, whether Maemo 6 will be compatible with the N900 is yet to be seen.

As I have said before I am extremely happy that Nokia are beginning to use alternatives to Symbian on their flagship smartphones, and I predict this time next year Symbian Nokia handsets will take a backseat to Maemo handsets, find out more on IntoMobile.

Do you see Nokia having a brighter future with Maemo or Symbian?

Maemo is the future for sure…the Symbian OS is outdated now and just looks plain boring. Nokia has blown everyone away with their developer videos for the N900.

Day one purchase for me :D

I don’t think maemo can pass symbian so soon because symbian will start to ship in cheaper devices like the nokia 5230 at about 150€. I guess maemo will be on high end and symbian for mainstream. Next year you’ll see symbian with an even bigger market share. That said, I’m really enthusiastic wit the nokia n900. I’ll buy one for sure.

Meamo will be in nokia flagship phones or convergence devices (pc in poketable format). But watch out for the resurgence of symbian when it goes out in 2010 with symbian2 and symbian3. Expect some very cool UI and at par with other OS’s feature that will be very appealing to the mass market. That will convince more of the current symbian users to upgrade with another symbian phone.
