Lexar JumpDrive Safe S3000 FIPS: Secure Thumbdrive
By: Jamie Pert | October 9, 2009 | Leave a CommentThese days one of the quickest and easiest ways of transporting data is by using a thumbdrive/pen drive, however there is one major issue with this, a lot of the cheap pen drives have no form of security, therefore if someone manages to get hold of your pen drive they will have full read and write access to your personal data.
For most of this it isn’t an issue, however for those of us who carry around extremely confidential or personal information this is a huge problem, over the years there have been a lot of secure pen drives released, however we have just learned of a new device manufactured by Lexar, the device is called the JumpDrive Safe S3000 FIPS.
This new thumdrive is extremely secure and is a validated to level 3 of FITS 140-2, FITS stands for Federal Information Processing Standard, level 3 is the second highest level of data security, its physical design also meets military waterproof standards.
There are many forms of security used with the thumbdrive, this includes hardware encryption, the drive also uses “Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 256-bit technology and utilizes an onboard hardware cryptographic controller to encrypt and decrypt data.”.
The drives are currently available direct from Lexar’s website, there are a range of sizes to choose from, starting at 2GB which will set you back $80, 4GB which will set you back $100, 8GB which will set you back $180 and 16GB for $300.
Some of these prices (especially the 8GB and 16GB models) seem a bit high, however can you really put a price on keeping your data secure? For more information check out Cnet’s article which also includes some photos.
