Powermat Wireless Charger: Will you pay the price?
By: Peter Chubb | October 7, 2009 | 2 CommentsWe reported yesterday that the Powermat Wireless Charger was now available, allowing you to charge a number of devices without the need for wires. The Register has been looking more closely at this and other similar products and asked if we would pay the high price just to do away with wires.
That is certainly a valid question and one that needs a closer look. There are a number of devices on offer that allow you to charge your cell phone wirelessly; you have the “Touchstone”, solely for use with the Palm Pre. Then there is the Powermat, the drawback with this device is that you also need to purchase an accessory for each device that you wish to charge. That could certainly become expensive.
Nokia are also looking at developing their own system, it is not certain if this will work with all their handsets, or you will need an adapter for each handset. The Register did hit on the fact that consumers want a single standard for charging our handset, and Micro USB is already addressing that issue.
