Powermat Wireless Charger: Will you pay the price?

We reported yesterday that the Powermat Wireless Charger was now available, allowing you to charge a number of devices without the need for wires. The Register has been looking more closely at this and other similar products and asked if we would pay the high price just to do away with wires.

That is certainly a valid question and one that needs a closer look. There are a number of devices on offer that allow you to charge your cell phone wirelessly; you have the “Touchstone”, solely for use with the Palm Pre. Then there is the Powermat, the drawback with this device is that you also need to purchase an accessory for each device that you wish to charge. That could certainly become expensive.

Nokia are also looking at developing their own system, it is not certain if this will work with all their handsets, or you will need an adapter for each handset. The Register did hit on the fact that consumers want a single standard for charging our handset, and Micro USB is already addressing that issue.

I think it is bit pricey. Similar devices (Wildcharge for example) are available for 50 bucks or less. They lack and the great look ‘n feel, but do the job!

BTW, Powermat supports more devices than the competition, so that is something you may consider. Here is a list of devices it could support -

would be worth the cost if I didn't have to also buy the "sleeves" but then it gets kind of spendy! The commercials on tv certainly do not show any extras!!! Too bad
