Gmail Phishing Attacks: Confirmation and Details from Google

Buzz This

Yesterday we confirmed that Google were aware of the recent phishing attacks and exploitations affecting Gmail accounts, however we did not really expand on what Google had to say on the matter, nor did we have much to say on what Google were going to do about it.

When Google were questioned by Computerworld on the matter here is what they had to say on the matter “We recently became aware of a phishing scheme through which hackers gained user credentials for Web-based mail accounts including a small number of Gmail accounts,” and added “As soon as we learned of the attack, we forced password resets on the affected accounts. We will continue to force password resets on additional accounts if we become aware of them”.

Both Microsoft and Google are adamant that the problems are not to do with security on the email services, instead they both are blaming the exploitation on a phishing scheme.

Personally I have a Gmail and a Hotmail account, and I have not been affected whatsoever, however whilst writing this post I did decide perhaps it was time to change my passwords just in-case, I would recommend you do the same, check out MacRumors for more information.

Were you affected by the recent exploitation? Tell us what happened below.

On two gmail accounts we had all incoming mail forwarded to two seperate msn.com email accounts with those emails deleted from our web inbox. As a consequence we never saw what was forwarded to those msn.com addresses. Hope there was no sensitive information!

We have changed our password and reset the forwarding setting.
