Buffalo HD-HU3: First USB 3.0 hard disk ships this month

In recent months we have covered a number of articles about USB 3.0, we have learned that a number of companies have already started to develop their products that are USB 3.0 ready, such as the “Freecom USB 3.0 Portable Drive” or the “Active Media Aviator.” Well Buffalo are the first to ship theirs, the HD-HU3 this month.

This is Buffalo’s first hard disk to support USB 3.0 and according to Engadget, will ship later this month. The new device is useless without a controller to support it, which is why Buffalo will offer the NEC IFC-PCIE2U3 2-port PCI Expressx1 host controller for ¥5,300 (about $60).

There are two version of the USB 3.0 hard drive, 1TB and 1.5TB, ¥20,000 (about $225) and ¥25,300 (about $284) respectively. Buffalo are also to launch a 2TB version at a later date, but we are not certain when this will be.
