T-Mobile Data Outage 2009: Update on Sidekick problem

By: Alan Ng | October 6, 2009 | 41 Comments

Yesterday we reported to you about the huge T-Mobile data outage that most of you with a Sidekick handset had been experiencing. We have some more information to give you now, including an update from Microsoft – who are responsible for the Danger servers that went down.

Firstly, thanks for all of the feedback we got from you regarding the situation. We received over fifty comments from you, telling us about your problems, with the general conclusion that all data services were down apart from making calls and receiving texts.

We have picked up an official statement regarding the issue from Microsoft, courtesy of SeattlePi. Microsoft have acknowledged all the problems, stating that e-mail service and back-up of user data will be restored today.

However, they have also stated that ”data rich services such as new purchases from the Catalog, may take longer to enable.”

Well, it has been quite a while since that statement was issued, so how are things looking for you now? We have also read numerous reports that T-Mobile are offering affected customers various ‘incentives’ to lighten the mood, but we feel you would rather have the service back and running asap.

Let us know what the current status is with your handsets.

I still can’t get anything at all other than voice and text. On Sunday evening, I had web browsing back, but since yesterday, I have been prompted to sign in because a new SIM card was detected. There is obviously no new SIM card, and I have been unable to sign in. Since I am not “signed in” I can’t access the browser either. It’s unbelievably frustrating. It’s 5 days now — this is just outrageous, and the information they’re providing is just pathetic.

I still do not have my contacts or saved e-mails. Internet was backup along with IMs, but now the internet is down again, or taking a year to connect to even Google.

Luckily I have some contacts saved to my SIM card.

soo i have the sidekick LX and all of my friends with the sidekick have most of there functions back on there phone and i have NONE it wont even let me sign in, ive been on the phone with them 546431154 times and ive either been disconnected OR theyve just told me that its being worked on the last time i called them was last night around 11pm and they told me “it was being worked on” again!! But all the updates ive read online say that we should have most of our functions restored by now and i dont have ANYYYY!!! i cant even sign into my account on my phone….this is sooo annoying because i rely on my sidekick for everything and i cant use it!!!!!!!

  • Alex

THIS IS WHAT IS HAPPENING TO MINE TOOO!!!! WICKED ANNOYING, THANK GOD IM NOT THE ONLY ONE!!

My browser works, as does Yahoo Messenger. Email is completely down still. The downloadable content was unresponsive when I tried out of curiosity. All of my contacts, stored emails, and browser bookmarks are unavailable. My wife\’s Sidekick has its bookmarks, etc. but the email is still down for her too.

This is day five. Danger\’s last update was over 24 hours ago, and Tmobile\’s was like 14 or 15 hours ago. Tmobile\’s twitter account has been silent for 18 hours now.

The updates from Danger & Tmobile seem to conflict in the details somewhat, and despite their claims to the contrary, I can assure you that all of the things I listed are still not working for me.

It\’s bad enough that they\’ve had a five-day outage (and who knows how long it will continue) but their communication has been minimal and inaccurate. They are still not forthcoming with information and that is as shameful as the outage itself.

My service is back n i got my g but email is still down…

  • jordan

My sidekick (and everyone else’s that I know) still won’t sign in, meaning even if the internet is back up nobody can use it…

  • jordan

And I also have NO data functions back, like they say we should have. No contacts, no anything. Frustration to the max.

  • JR

I have the G back but still no contacts, notes, IM or email. Web browsing was working this morning but now it’s out again. Texts and calls are working fine. I’ve called 3 times in the past few days. The first 2 times they gave me an estimated time everything would be working. The 3rd time they said they didn’t know and couldn’t tell me if it would be a day or a week. I like tmobile but this is ridiculous. Thank God I’m out of my contract this month. I think it’s time to finally get an iphone.

  • Denise

I had the G and then whenever I make a phone call my G takes about 2 hours to come back if it even does come back&also since this outage my phone rings for everything but text messages.this is so annoying&fustrating service has been down since friday

  • kat

i’m finally signed in after 2 days of trying and my web browser works but that’s it….still no contacts or email or calendar/notes. twitter and myspace aren’t signed in yet..been trying for 5 minutes.

STATE OF DELAWARE; 6:30PM-Still NO EMAIL (Tmail) on my SK-III, I have had since November 2005. FIVE DAYS NOW, with NO EMAIL! I can’t help but wonder if there ever has been an outage of this duration? I have owned a mobile phone since 1973, starting with Motorola Dial-Up I.M.T.S. In 1972 and recall no outage lasting more than one day. There is more to this than meets the eye. . . . . . .

  • Sarah

I have the “G,” but cannot access any websites. No contacts or other data, so I can only make outgoing calls and texts if I happen to know the person’s number.

The worst part of this whole mess is that yesterday, when I could access web pages for a short period, I would log onto Facebook and get random people’s accounts, people I don’t even know! That means that other random people were probably getting into my Facebook account. That scared me into changing the password on Facebook, and any other site I might have accessed with my SK. What if someone were accessing my email or bank account!? This was very alarming and I lost sleep worrying about it.

Tomorrow I am getting a new phone, and if my contacts and other data are not restored by then, I guess I will lose all of it. I am so unhappy that I ever signed up for this service.

When I asked, I was offered a measly $5 refund. I understand this might be raised to a month’s refund. Even that would not be enough compensation for the inconvenience this has caused.

  • Irene

The HUGE problem is that when you are able to access the web and go to Facebook, it is logging you in to someone else’s account! This means others may be getting into yours as well. I’ve been trying to reach T-mobile about this data breach but they are not able to answer all of the phone calls coming in. I was on hold and then they just dumped the call. T-mobile better do something other than credit me a month……this sounds like a class action lawsuit….!

  • Theresa Wigley

In Floridas, it is 9:30 pm Monday night and I still do not have any access to contacts on my sidekick. I have been told that it should be restored by tonight, but so far nothing. My battery is drained twice as fast as normal and the T-mobile rep told me that is because the Sidekick is constantly trying to update information and this should be fixed when the data is fixed. I hope this is fixed soon as my patience is getting less and less now on day 5!

  • jessica

Well im in cali (work in l.a live in santa ana) && my 3G is up && running =) thank god..have contacts all IMs haven’t tried email myspace app which I use the most is also up && running, without someone else profile popping up I read that had been the nightmare of the morning today everything working good…hopefully they fix it soon….I don’t have my faves icon back up do have my contacts tho….&& well my kick looking back to normal =)

  • JP

When the outage first happened, which at the time I thought it may have just been my device acting up, I took the battery out and put it back in to reset the phone. Now I’m hearing on T-Mobile’s auto-voicemail answer that you should NOT remove the battery because it could cause data loss (contacts, emails, etc)?!? Nice of them to let me know that NOW! I’m gonna be really pissed if I don’t get all my stuff back once the system is up and running again, whenever that will be…

  • Neal

I have everything but email in Atlanta Ga. However I’m thinking that they were hacked into major league. They sent me a text saying that I would have a free month of data service ($30/mth) which I assume is a preemptive strike against what we don’t know yet. good luck and hope you didnt have a bunch of nude photos in your sidekick

  • marisa

my phone contacts are missing too, and my phone keeps dying and the im isnt working!!! All my texts oare gone also! this sucks

  • marisa

and my 5 faves havent been on for days!!!!

  • Elis

This is crazy. The only prolem I had with mine was that all of my text messages deleted (one time) and that for a couple of days my internet and IMing werent working. But that changed on Saturday night/Sunday morning and everything went back to normal. But I’m hearing of all of these problems from nearly everyone that owns a Sidekick, which I find kind of odd, considering that I has such few problems…

  • Mae Lynn

Well, I’m in South Texas. My phone has been acting crazy for almost 2 weeks now it seems. First I thought it was my phone going out on me. Then when I called in about it, the Rep told me that her sidekick had been doing the same things. My phone resets itself and comes up with a little battery with x’d out eyes and tells me to reboot. All my emails, texts, picture mail where wiped out. Not to mention my ringer will go off for a call but not for a text message. How? I don’t get it. I have to keep checking my phone for messages since the sound won’t work. And it doesn’t show the names in my text messages anymore it just has the number. My battery has been draining fast too. But I guess if its searching for updates that makes sense. It just makes me mad that I lost a lot of important stuff. This seems unreal that in today’s world of technology they can’t fix this problem faster. My only guess is that a virus infiltrated the danger network and was passed along to all of our phones.

  • Alex

I already got most of my stuff back but it was so frustrating over the weekend to have nothing working. Some of my notes got erased and most of my numbers are gone from my address book (thank god I saved the main numbers on my SIM). Well anyways, hit my aim up ladies (phr3shtadeff) lol. My friend says that he made a 5 min call earlier and it took almost a whole hour to get his “G” back. Sux and i’m never comin back to T-Mo after my contract expires.

  • laurenam

    missing 135 contacts.
i currently only call my mother and myself.
because those are the only 2 numbers i legitimately know.
    fml.

  • katie

This whole deal pisses me off. People were hacking in and out of everyones Facebook/ and or MySpace. Once you sign on to someone elses login you should realize not to mess with it. I think we should get credited a new phone!!

  • Holly

I am still missing everything… no contacts, no saved emails/texts, no calendar, no notes. When I get the “G” and go on the internet, it only lasts for about a minute and then it says I have no service. We deserve more than a month of credit. I’m done with T-Mobile after my contract runs out.

  • megan gilly

It is 6:54 and I still don’t have my address book or am receiving emails or have my calendar. I am so annoyed. I took out my battery on Friday and put it back in because I just thought there was a weird phone thing but now I am worried my data calendar and address won’t ever be back. Does anyone know anything?

  • MIKEY

My sidekick received some emails last night (from my tmail account) but I was not even able to open them – at least I know who to contact to have them send it to another email address. I called T-Mobile and they said I can opt out of my contract with them with no penalty fee if their service is not back up by Saturday. I am looking forward to my new iPhone!

  • Tasiask

I still havent recieved the text message for the new password or anything…….. I still have no G or the two dots…. smh at microsoft and danger.

  • Heather

Me too – this problem is much bigger than T Mobile is admitting. I am going to see if competing providers will cover the early cancellation fee if I transfer and sign a 2 year contract. I’ve been complaining about the Sidekick since I got it, and even had it replaced once when it was under warranty, which ended last month. I begged for a discounted upgrade/replacement since I’ve had so many problems with the Sidekick, and T Mobile declined every request. So now I am shopping other vendors. What a disappointment.

  • Heidy

I have no contacts, no notes, no myfaves, no calendar, no e-mail, no ringtones. I am going crazy because the notes are very important to me. I write down mostly all my usernames & passwords there. I also have school notes & just notes that are like diary entries.
I need them back NOW ! I feel like canceling this service & switching to another company.
As my friends, who also have sidekicks said, “RIDICULOUS. !”

  • http://myspace.com/RSRJ0k3r47 Joker

Around last friday i began noticing the samething as everyone else did. my phone waz goin crazy. i have the 2009 sidekick LX and i have the complete following:
    No txt msgs
    No Incoming or Send calls
    No Web Browser
    No IM/App. Usage
Anything that Required the 3g Network or just signal at all completely was out of order..and until today which is The 8th of October i found out why..i cant believe whatz happening and T.Mobile needs to figure something out and fast because any longer than a week and they will see a huge decline over a course of time..situations like these need to be properly planned and handled. my life runs on the sidekick as far as information receiving goes, and from what im hearing MS (Microsoft) has something to do with this. Something must be done..and fast.

  • http://PR Customer

As of today, still no data package, email and address book not recovered (most recent is 6 October), three password changes, complained to Manager at TMobile where I bought new SK on 2 October. I am hoping to recover address book, then intend to return SK first thing Monday and transition to another provider. TMobile has a huge problem as it has been seven days and still no full recover. Only phone and text are workable. I am tired of hearing the excuses and the distinctions – no email, address book, no internet access, etc. Their arrogance is totally off-putting especially since I had just bought a new device and renewed the contract on the day it went down.

  • amandah

I have the LX and I still don’t have my contacts or emails notes anything…this is getting annoying!

  • wondr2

I called tmobile and they said I would get my contacts back, even though it’s not saved on my sim card. It’s been days now…..will my contacts back???

  • http://www.tupacimpersonator.com Josh

Just got the word from t-mobile that all our contacts, pics and other data is most likely gone forever. Do you realize all my phone numbers were on that thing? You guys lost all of my f*****g phone numbers? Why didn’t you have redundant servers or some kind of backup plan? I use my phone for work and now all the numbers I’ve collected over the past few years are gone! Do you guys even realize how much of a screw up this is? I’ve been a tmobile customer since 2004. Always paid my bill and everything. I’m done now. I’m done with t-mobile for good. You guys are the absolute worst. This is pathetic. I can’t even call business partners and when I get calls I have no idea who’s calling me.

  • eboogie

Wow. A whole week no contacts, email or internet service. I am stuck as I just renewed my 2 year contract. Here it is sunday night and I missed out on getting up with my friends because my phone is down.

  • Dimitri

My Sidekick just rebooted by itself. Like the battery was pulled out, only that it wasn’t and I know it was fully charged. This is not the first time it has happened this month. Last time it rebooted up just fine. But this time when I turned it back on all it did was show the white screen with the four symbols, then nothing else. This is ridiculous. I will be cancelling my service, and telling everyone I know how horrible service with T-mobile is. This whole month with the server has been a mess, and your technical service is useless. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that a hacker messed up your whole system and you just don’t know how to fix it.

  • T-Mobile Sucks, Everybody switch providers

The iPhone is available for $99 now with the service plan. It’s a much better phone, and much better service provider.

  • smoker

A freemonth for internet + 100 dolar visa card, is it enought? I don’t think so …. I wanna get an g-1 forfree o mythouch ……

  • gabrielle

I still can’t download anything an everytime I turn my fone off I lose my recent calls. Very frusrtatin. The 1month credit doesn’t make up for the fact that I srill can’t use all the functions I pay for. Luckily tho I never lost my contacts but I did experience the no internet txt emails im or anythin else data for about a week. Ugh!
