Gmail and Hotmail targeted by phishing hackers
By: Alan Ng | October 6, 2009 | Leave a CommentIt has been reported that hackers are targeting Google Gmail and Microsoft’s Hotmail service, by using a sophisticated phishing method to trick unsuspecting users into revealing their login details.
According to this article from the BBC, they have totalled as many as 30,000 names and passwords from e-mail providers such as Hotmail, Yahoo and AOL, that were posted publicly on the internet.
Google have since stated that targeted gmail accounts have now been safeguarded, while thousands of Hotmail accounts have also been affected by the scam.
A quote from a Google rep states: “As soon as we learned of the attack, we forced password resets on the affected accounts.”
