The 2009 Nobel Prize for Physics recognizes pioneers in communication, Charles Kao, George Smith and Willard Boyle will share this year’s price. All three have been instrumental when it comes to communications and great to see that they have been rewarded for their achievements.

BBC News who reported the news goes on to explain what all three Nobel Prize 2009 Physics winners have done in for the industry. The first is Charles Kao; he helped develop fiber optic cables. These thin threads of glass allow for huge amounts of data to travel through them using light.

George Smith and Willard Boyle both worked on the charged coupled device, or CCD. This light detector is found inside all digital cameras. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said that half the 2009 Nobel Prize for Physics would go to Kao, with the other going to Smith and Boyle.
