Toyota Recall Explained: Floormat Hook becomes detached
Filed under: Autos

We reported a few days ago that Japanese automaker, Toyota were in the process of a recall of almost four million vehicles from the Toyota and Lexus range. We knew that the recall was due to a problem with the vehicles floormats, but we did not know the full reason behind it, until now.
Kicking Tires explains that the floormats would creep forward; these would then get stuck under the accelerator. As you can imagine, this would be very dangerous which is why Toyota will recall these vehicles. However, we must stress that the recall has not been made official just yet.
The reason why the mats creep forward is a simple one and easy to solve. It seems that the hook that attaches the floormat to the carpet can often become detached. The reason why this does this is simple; the floormats are an optional extra, meaning that a customer would not want a fixed stem sticking out of the carpet.
The easy solution is to just pop the hooks back in place, but that is only a temporary measure. Toyota is currently working on a more permanent solution. However, we are not sure how long this process will take, so owners will just have to be very careful.
