Sony speaks on PS3 Firmware 3.01 issues

Sony have issued a rather brief statement regarding the widespread number of complaints that have come in following the recent PS3 Firmware v3.01 update.

According to Eurogamer, Sony has told them that all the issues reported are ‘not’ a result of the new firmware update. Let’s just remind you of some of the problems that you have reported to us. Firstly, there is problems regarding game freezes (Uncharted in particular), then some of you have also been having problems playing Blu-ray films, since updating to 3.01.

Eurogamer also states that Sony have been telling customers that they will need to fork out £128 to fix their console if they are no longer under warranty.

Lets just clear this up a bit folks, is anyone still having issues with PS3 firmware 3.01?

No problems here, and I don’t know anyone that’s had any problems, either with 3,0 or 3.01

Seems like a vocal minority making about of noise. Perhaps their consoles had failed of natural and are making out it’s a firmware problem to try and pressure Sony into fixing it for free.

THe problem is, consoles are bought by kids, and they don’t have the sensibilities of adults.

Actually, I am a 34 year old and my PS3 stopped working the second I downloaded the firmware 3.0 update and 3.01 did not fix it. BluRay games and movies do not work. PS2 and DVD’s work.

Next time, think before you post.

@Mark stfu if it didn’t effect you. I got the 40gig and the 80gig systems. Firmware 3.0 did nothing to effect me but 3.01 crashed them both I was playing Madden online on the 40gig then it froze I restarted it then it would not read any discs at all.So I’m like wtf? I then tried the 8ogig and it said I had to update it so I did, the next thing you know I hear this god awful sound coming from my system as I’m playing Need for Speed Shift. It then freezes too. This is the catch, I got Need For Speed from my girl because she knew I was mad about my Ps3 crashing. LOl! Sony needs to fix these systems for free release a new firmware update ASAP.

before you say that there are only a couple of consumers that are in dilemna right now because of the recent firmware update. log on at playstation blog.com…

Yes, yes and yes. Since installing 3.0 (and subsequently, 3.01), my 40GB PS3 has been unable to read Blu-Ray games or movies; regular DVDs and games installed directly to the HD work fine.

The claims that this is all a coincidence is damage control by Sony – my console had worked flawlessly until the updated firmware was installed.

One of the feat ures of 3.0 was to load Blu-Ray data faster. I suspect that older hardware, such as mine, is unable to handle the faster speeds – much like an older CD drive is often unable to read CD-Rs that were burned at speeds > 16X. In fact, it was not uncommon to see firmware updates for older CD drives to allow them to read discs burned at faster speeds.

My preference would be for Sony to own up to it and release another update with a new option allowing for faster BR reads that could be disabled for older units.

And I’m an adult, thank you very much, who happens to write software for a living.

    Sony , ” YOU LIE ”

My PS3 bricked the BD drive the moment I did the latest update.

This is now the second time this happened and Sony claimed it was a hardware failure then as they do now so i sent my PS3 back for them to re-format the system and send it back as before.

    Sony ,”YOU LIE”

My PS3 forced update bricked the BD drive the moment I did the latest update. Everything else worked.

This is now the second time this update has bricked my PS3. Sony claimed it was a hardware failure then as they do now so I sent my PS3 back for them to re-format the system and send it back to me as before.

    Sony,”YOU LIE”

I am sick and tired of these updates, sick and tired of spending $150 to get it fixed. I could now have had the PS3 slim on top of my old ps3. This sounds like a ploy to increase sales/revenue just as Microsoft have done with the XBOX360 failures.

    NO MORE UPDATES THAT BRICK!!!!

Where are the consumer complaint groups and the class action lawsuits against the thieves and liars of Sony?

    Sony “YOU LIE”

here is another thing.. after installing 3.01 the games that i paid and downloaded online wont run anymore. i activated the system (also included in the recent update) still not recognized. i called sony and was told that i have to buy it again. this is beginning to look like a scam…or is sony now being run by mediocre employees…again according to a playstation blogger the ps3circleofdeath. com will be on air october 5th 2009. sign up so that media will eventually expose this and more consumers will be educated. something has to be done.

  8. Cel-Ru says:

This is long winded but PLEASE PLEASE read on..it will HELP YOU ALL!!
My PS3 packed up working properly after the 3.01 update (not reading Blue-rays or games). It’s a 40GB and only 22 months old, but of course out of warranty because of age. I called SONY and spoke to an arrogant unhelpful agent who basically wanted to grab £130 as quick as he could from me for a replacement and refused to acknowledge the widespread problems reported by PS3 owners…apparently I’m the only customer in the UK to complain..yeah right!! SONY state “It’s a hardware problem clearly”. This is without even looking at my PS3..mighty impressive!!
Anyways I contact “GAME” where I bought it from and reported the problem to them. I basically used the “Sale Of Goods Act 1979″ as my line of complaint! see link http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Governmentcitizensandrights/Yourrightsandresponsibilities/DG_10015892?cids=Google_PPC&cre=Government_Citizens_Rights
This is a VERY VERY strong piece of legislation that works and protects buyers!!
Basically you state that he PS3 was not “Fit for purpose” and not “Durable”. A £300 machine should last longer than 22 months, i.e. 4-6 years average. By law, when you buy an item you enter a “contract” with the shop you bought it from. When an item is out of warranty, don’t complain to the manufacturer i.e. SONY, complain to the shop you bought it from as they sold it to you. They can argue with SONY themselves because it was supplied to them by SONY. (continued)

When the goods break and are expected to last a long time i.e. high value electricals (PS3’s XBOX 360’s), the goods therefore “Do not conform to contract” i.e. the contract you have with the shop when you bought it. No store can argue with it as it the law, and as a consumer the sale of goods act 1979 is there to protect you “The Consumer” for events like this! As long as you are reasonable and ask for repair in the first instance they cannot refuse and it’s down to them to pay. If they cannot repair it then they are obliged to offer a replacement or refund. They must also do it causing the least amount of inconvenience to you.
“GAME” have taken my PS3 away to a workshop, had it for 5 days and hey presto it’s fixed and working now. And guess what SONY, it was down to a glitch with the latest firmware update 3.01!!!! SONY ARE LIARS but this is the only way us PS3 owners can sort this problem out. It’s long winded but saves you stress and hassle and having to pay £130 or worse still £250 for a new one!
Please please all of you that have had this problem complain to the shop you bought it from using the “Sale of goods act”. It genuinely works!!! Good Luck!!

Thanks for the useful feedback Tony!

My PS3 60g, would not play blue ray/games,immediately after the update,it was working fine 5mins before.I phoned the help line, they first suggested hardware, then system format.I read that this will not revert the os to earlier working bios.So im stuck with a useless machine my kids cant play on/ I cant watch HiDef movies on.Im going to get a cheap blue ray player and a Nintendo Wii for the kids. The PS3 is 22mnths old,Im not forking out for repairs or the new flat PS3(which has no media server function I hear).Ill stick to my PC for games from now on.
      Thanks for your comments.

  10. Matt R says:

Same happened to me. BD drive bricked immediately after the update. If Sony continues not to acknowledge the problem, they’ve lost a lifelong customer here….
