Toyota Recall: List of models affected by floor mats issue

By: Alan Ng | September 29, 2009 | 51 Comments

It has been reported that Toyota are finally taking action against the number of complaints over floormat issues with certain models, by announcing a recall of 3.8 million vehicles.

As reported from AutoBlog, this is by far the biggest recall that the auto giant has had to make in the U.S. The news comes after the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration issued a statement to all owners of Toyota and Lexus models from 2004-2010, informing you that you may need to send your vehicle in for recall.

The issue at hand here, which a lot of you already know about, is all to do with the floormats on some of the Toyota models. As you can see in the image above, the problem can cause the accelerator pedal to get stuck in a wide open throttle position and wedge itself against the floormat – which is obviously a major safety issue.

The models affected are the 2004-2009 Prius, 2005-2010 Tacoma, 2005-2010 Avalon, 2006-2010 IS 250 and IS350, 2007-2010 Camry, 2007-2010 ES 350 and 2007-2010 Tundra.

If you own one of the listed models above, we would advise you to head over to AutoBlog here, for the full press statement, where’ll you’ll find more information on what to do.

    I think the 2004 Toyota Carolla should be recalled because my floormat does the same thing.When im driving,the floormat slides up sometimes.

    I’ve been having this problem with my ’06 COROLLA since I purchased new! Why isn’t it on the list??

    I’ve wondered that it might be missing a fastener somehow. There’s a single grommet hole on the side away from the pedals, but no corresponding hardware (hook? peg?) to fix it to the floor.

  • Lorna Wong

    My 2005 Corolla has the same probelm as yours.

  • Elaine P.

    My 2001 Corolla has the same problem too. It is very annoying. Sometimes I’ve had to remove it & try to flatten the bump from the ride up of the mat. It still is a continuing problem, I never thought it would be listed means for a recall. 2001-? Corollas should definitely added to the list.

  • Meghan

    I’ve got a 2007 Corolla and I’m getting the same problem. It doesn’t happen very often but still gets stuck. Wonder why it isn’t on the recall list…

  • Bill

    This is such a farce. The picture shown above even proves to you that the car operator had to first step on the gas pedal all the way wanting to accelerate that fast in order for the pedal to finally meet the floor mat edge upon which it can get stuck there on. But then, I would not call this “unintended acceleration” because it is obvious to me that the driver wanted to accelerat that hard in the first place. Therefore the driver(s) would have already been in a frame of mind of high speed. The only thing here is that the when the pedal gets stuck there, then they are surprised that the car does not slow down when they let go of the gas pedal. Oh well, just kick the mat out of the way when that happens and it will let go of the gas. But no, the dim wits have no idea how a car operates so let it rev.
    oh well, glad my RAV4 does not have such a problem.

  • Mike

    If you have a grommet hole then you should have a hook connecting the floor mat to the floor.

  • John

    Well what can I say……. that’s what happens when you buy a Toyota. Toyota has way too many recalls.

  • Joe

    I had 3 Toyotas and never had any problems, all made in Japan. Looks like only U.S. made have problems :)

  • Kelly

    Then again, my ’98 Camry was made in the U.S. and I have never had issues with ANYTHING on my car. It’s needed nothing but routine maintenance.

  • wow

    “But no, the dim wits have no idea how a car operates so let it rev…”
    People died because of this. And it’s dimwits, not dim wits, dimwit.

  • Blue

    Our 2008 Scion Tc has the same problem with the floormat sliding and clumping up under the pedals. I think this recall list may soon expand even further.

  • Laurie

    I have the same thing with my 2004 corolla. But i have a standard so everytime i shift it gets caught under the clutch and i have to try and pull out out from under it as im driving.NOT FUN.

  • Rebecca

    My Toyota Venza has this floor mat issue as well. It has happened to me twice now. Not sure why it is not on the re-call list.

  • james

    i think 90% of vehicles on the road have this issue. I do in my 2004 nissan murano. Just take the 5 seconds to check the floor mat before you take off to make sure its not binding or overlapping the accelerator OR…..just take the floor mat out!!?? Thats what i did and it has worked fine for me ever since :)

  • Eric

    Recalls happen, no one is perfect. But this problem has been around a long time, and by the size/duration appears to be a systemic lack of care/attention.
    Too big to be so wrong. Sounds like the old GM. But I expect Toyota to react in a healthier way than the old GM ever did.

  • Joan

    I think that all of you people who are bitching about the floor mats are just stupied. Really just listen to what you guys are saying. Your big problem is floor mats then you need to take an extra 5 seconds to check the mats before you start to drive. I have always owned a toyota corolla since i was 17 yrs old and never had a problem with any of my cars so stop bitching about something that has noting to do with motor, trans, air bags, or anything really important that you yourself cant fix.

  • hmm

    ? should i buy one ? or not?

  • Thea

    Am i just been silly or to so-called ‘responsible adults’ have no common sense? If the pedal gets stuck on the mat move it! My yaris is the 3rd car ive owned and ive always had this problem with the mats ive used (brought from halfords). If you screw the mat into the holes made by toyota then yes it will get stuck under the gas pedal. With a bit of logic though you could unscrew it and move the mat up therefore eliminating the problem! Sorry but yes Toyota messed up- the mat should have been longer but surely you would notice this problem long before your out on the main road putting your foot down. Since ive moved my mat- no more problems.

  • david

    I think some people just like to whine over unimportant issue,are you now willing to let go your car for more than 2 weeks or so due to the recall just because you can’t have the rubber pedal replaced at the general stores??come on now..its not worth the hulabaloo..my choice is TOYOTA

  • Don Calvert

    My 2007 Scion has had rug problems for years,
    they charge ~$175 for them too.

    my fiance 2007 corolla the same.

    THEY ARE SLACKING OFF, i hope never to be in another toyota;
    will buy only American.

  • Don Calvert

    only if you are suicidal

  • jincy

    hey,
    i have a toyota camry 2009. is that on the recall list?

  • Joon

    I went to Toyota dealership in Van Nuys, CA to confirm about this issue. One of their sales rep. told me that if the VIN number starts with JT your car is not included in the recall but if they start with “4″ owners will received a letter from them advising the owner to bring their car back for a fix. He also told me that all “JT” cars parts are all made in Japan so he said no need to worry about the problem. Any thoughts?

  • King’sAdvisor

    Well Billy Boy, It’s all okay with you as long as it doesn’t affect you, but when you or yours is touched or killed, well, let’s just say everyone will need mercy at sometime in their life.

  • Funny

    Let me explain something, cause I think some of you don’t quite understand what that recall is about.

    * Certain 2009-2010 RAV4
    * 2009-2010 Corolla
    * 2009-2010 Matrix
    * 2005-2010 Avalon
    * 2007-2010 Camry
    * 2010 Highlander
    * 2007-2010 Tundra
    * 2008-2010 Sequoia

    That list of car is not about floor mat. It’s about gas pedal that has a potential sticking problem. It doesn’t get stuck in the floor mat, it just stick. That list is only Toyota cars that has a certain type of gas pedal, (CTS brand, others use Denso)

    Your floor mat problem is not associate with Toyota, any brand of car can have that problem. Ever notice that driver’s side floor, near the seat, you have 2 little hook? Original part floor mat (summer and winter) will have to hole on the driver’s mat, to hook up on the floor so it doesn’t move forward and go jam your pedals. If you have no name brand floor mat, didn’t install/broke the little hook or put your winter mat over your summer mat (some put newspaper under it), you most likely will experience that problem with the mat getting under your pedal. Please people, use common sense.

    This whole thing was trumped up by the pissed off unions and a bunch of greedy trial lawyers!! Toyota has lapped the American auto industry for the last 2 decades and the unions and Detroit are mad about it. They had to find something to try and slow Toyota down. I’m an independent car dealer, and I will ALWAYS recommend a foreign car over a domestic-that’s why my customers keep coming back. Toyota will always have the best quality and will come out of this with flying colors.

  • Quitthebs

    I’ve owned a ford, vw, honda & toyota. The floor mats on the ford and vw both slid up once the mat got old and the clip holding it in place broke off. This problem happens to most cars, just do wear and tear maintenance on your car and you won’t have a problem. At least my honda and toyota gave me years and years of trouble free driving. My ford crapped out after 4 and don’t get me started with electrical issues with vws.

  • Albert

    I have a 2003 Highlander, its without Question, the most durable vehicle I’ve ever owned

  • BCB

    How can a union or a trial lawyer ‘trump up’ a mechanical failure. Justin, you are talking right out of your ass! You are so loyal to Japanese cars and their so called ‘better’ quality – get out of the USA – go to Japan and have a wonderful life living in a box. There are too many of you liberal jerk-offs in the USA anyhow…

  • BCB

    The manufacturer of the faulty acceleration pedal assembly will probably pay the biggest price for this…Wonder how many other Japanese cars are using the same part? Most of these cars; Toyota, Nissan, Lexus and Honda are all built out of the same basic parts – some of their ‘competitive’ makes are actually the same car – just small sheet metal changes between brands. The Japanese have convinced some people that their cars are better quality than domestic…that’s really a laugh and some will swear that it is so. Took the sales pitch hook line and sinker! It is so sad to me to see an old retired couple riding around in a brand new Toyota – really sad. They sold out.

    About the Recall to Address Sticking Accelerator Pedals

    On January 21, Toyota announced its intention to recall approximately 2.3 million select Toyota Division vehicles equipped with certain accelerator pedal mechanisms that may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position. Toyota vehicles affected by the recall include:

    • Certain 2009-2010 RAV4
    • Certain 2009-2010 Corolla
    • 2009-2010 Matrix
    • 2005-2010 Avalon
    • Certain 2007-2010 Camry
    • Certain 2010 Highlander
    • 2007-2010 Tundra
    • 2008-2010 Sequoia

    No Lexus Division or Scion vehicles are involved in these actions. Also not involved are Toyota Prius, Tacoma, Sienna, Venza, Solara, Yaris, 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, Land Cruiser, Highlander hybrids and certain Camry models, including Camry hybrids, all of which remain for sale.

    Further, Camry, RAV4, Corolla and Highlander vehicles with Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) that begin with “J” are not affected by the accelerator pedal recall.

    This is where to go to see the real list.

    I have a Toyota Previa T-Spirit 2006 model and I have a very worrying problem. On the 2 ocassions I have driven through water after heavy downpour my steering wheel has LOCKED!!! This is extremely frightening and I am only lucky that I had slowed down to go through the water otherwise I would have stood no chance of steering the car out of the path of an oncoming vehicle. I would be interested to know if anyone else has had a similar problem. I have booked it into a garage to be looked at but quite frankly I am scared to drive it now.

  • Lucy

    With three Toyotas–car, truck, van–in the driveway, we look like a Toyota dealership. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. So far, I have not had any problem with the floor mat or anything else in my ’08 Prius. In the past 40 plus years I have owned six Toyotas, and each one lasted well over 200,000 miles without a hitch. Recalls happen. It’s terribly unfortunate that people died when the accelerator(s) stuck, and it’s something that everyone who works for Toyota needs to think about, whether they’re management personnel, the people who make the parts, or those who assemble the vehicles. Toyota has a long history of product excellence, and I hope they are able to get through these recalls by employing their expertise in positive fixes for the current problems, and even tougher manufacturing standards. I, for one, stand by Toyota.

  • Barry

    The replacement mats are a joke , they do not cover much of the floor and are not even close to the qaulity of the original mats . THEY ARE PRETTY MUCH A CHEAP JOKE!!!!

  • drew

    dont floor it. problem solved.

  • Brenden

    Im sure you sell cars very well ,however this will without a dought drop the resale value.

    I've had my Yaris for 3 years with never a single problem. I love it. And I never used the mats that came with the car, but bought better quality ones to protect against snow and slush.
    My last car was a Nissan Sentra and there were 3 recalls on it, but no one seemed to care about that.

    I had the problem with the mat in my 2006 Corolla where the grommet came off and was told I should purchase new (all 4) mats…..I sewed it around a few times to strengthen it….now the clip on the floor came out and can't be fixed…something should be done for this problem…….why so many mat problems?…never had a problem with my 2001 Corolla…what's up Toyota!!!
