Verizon iPhone: Will the U.S. follow Orange UK?

Verizon iPhone: Will the U.S. follow Orange UK?

By: Peter Chubb | September 28, 2009 | 7 Comments

We reported this morning that the Apple iPhone exclusivity agreement in the UK with O2 is soon to expire and we now know that Orange will also be allowed to offer the iPhone 3G and 3GS to its customers. We now wonder if Apple will do the same in the U.S. and open up the iPhone to other carriers, the most popular choice being Verizon Wireless.

The details are still vague on the Orange iPhone deal, there is no release date or pricing, but we do know that it will be very soon. This could couldn’t have come at a better time for orange, as it will be just in time for the holiday season. Orange has always been in a great position to offer the iPhone to UK customers, as they offer the iPhone to 28 countries.

We still have no idea why Apple still favors AT&T, but we have heard rumors that their contract could be ending. AT&T does not want to give up its exclusivity agreement without a fight and expanding HSPA standard will certainly help its cause.

Just maybe, Apple might see how many more iPhone handsets will sell in the UK following this deal, and will finally allow Verizon to offer the iPhone as well. This is what American users want, so why not give it to them.

when will the new blackberry storm be available

As far as I understand, the biggest reason Apple has chosen AT&T over Verizon is because the 3G that Verizon uses actually requires more battery power. As a result the iPhone would require a complete redesign in its battery technology. Also, AT&T is desperate to gain customers and the iPhone is their biggest draw. So AT&T seems to be willing to do about anything to keep it.

Actually Apple chose AT&T only after negotiations with Verizon failed. Specifically, Apple wanted complete control over the iPhone distribution channels which would potentially have cut retailers such as Best Buy, Walmart, and Circuit City out of the game.
