Opera 10: Review

Opera’s latest version of their browser has not been out long but within its first week was downloaded over 10 million times, a review of Opera 10 has now shown up on MacRumors and looks into the overall performance, features and interface improvements.

Performance wise Opera performs pretty well, however it is not the fastest browser available, they ran a series of tests on a 2GHz Core 2 Duo MacBook, one of the tests involved rendering an XHTML test page, Firefox took 2.66 seconds, Opera took 1.83 seconds and Safari 4 took .49 seconds.

Another of the test was a CSS test, Firefox was again the slowest taking 361ms, Opera took 152 ms and again Safari done the best taking just 35 ms, where Opera let itself down was with its JavaScript performance, MacRumors ran the SunSpider JavaScript benchmark, Opera took 6144.6 ms, Firefox took 1464.4 and again Safari done the best scoring 756.4 ms.

Obviously benchmarks do not tell the full story, design and features are also extremely important, some of the features such as Speed Dial are great however some of the features seem quite out of place within a web browser.

Overall the review finishes pretty favorably for Opera 10, MacRumors seem pretty happy with the design, its built in email client and its Speed Dial feature, however they are not so impressed with its JavaScript performance and its limited HTML 5 support, find out more on MacRumors fully detailed article here.
