Apple Pulls TomTom Car Kit for iPhone, after complaints

By: Peter Chubb | September 24, 2009 | 3 Comments

While we cannot confirm that Apple has pulled the TomTom car kit for the iPhone due to complaints, we can confirm that some users were complaining at the same time as the car kit was pulled. We said this morning that the TomTom Car Kit for iPhone 3GS and 3G was now available from the Apple store in the UK, it seems that the page that used to have the product now says “No items were found that matched your query.”

The reason why some customers have been complaining was due to question 15 on the TomTom website. TomTom led customers to purchase the app from iTunes, as it was assumed that the app would be sold separately. This has certainly lead to confusion and anger.

Engadget states that the app will be bundled with the car kit, so who is right? TomTom have it on their site that the app will be separate, while Engadget reckon it will be bundled with the car kit. Confusing matters more, before Apple pulled the page from their site, they said this “You get both the TomTom navigation app for your iPhone 3GS or 3G and the docking kit to hold your iPhone securely in place on your dashboard or windscreen.”

Did you purchase the app before the car kit was released?
Currently, we have no conformation as to why the page was pulled from Apple.

I only bought the navigation app last week and paid €80 for it. I will be very annoyed if the holder and app will be sold together for €99 and no discount offered to existing app owners.

And I would also be annoyed if they expected to sell the holder/GPS for €99 and expect you to purchase the app for an additional €80. No sale here!

Well, two years ago I bought a 40” LCD flat screen TV. I paid $2400 for it and now they are around $1000. I am very annoyed. Also, I bought a cell phone with a service contract and paid $100. Now they are free with the contract. Very annoyed. Etc…

What probably happened is that TomTom figured out no one will buy an app and separate adapter for $250 when standalone dedicated GPS units (which by the way function much better than the iPhone app, I heard) cost around $120 – what is the point? On the other hand, they have to make money from the hardware, so guess which price will be cut? Software is free…
