Samsung Omnia 2: Verizon Wireless makes changes

By: Peter Chubb | September 23, 2009 | 5 Comments

When Samsung launched its Omnia 2 handsets, we assumed that when it was released to other networks, they would all look the same. However, Verizon have always wanted to be different, so have made changes to the design of the phone.

Phones Review have been doing some digging, and it seems that Verizon have done away with the handsets distinctive cubic d-pad. Engadget now reports that the cubic d-pad on the Samsung Omnia 2 has been replaced by a shield style design.

To give you an idea of what this new design looks like, just imagine the cubic d-pad that is found on the South Korean B900. The only other change that we know of is its battery, Verizon have now increased this to a 1500mAh battery.

We recently reported that the new Samsung Omnia 2 will revolutionize the way you text and email, let us know if this in in fact true.

Peter, I’m confused. The original i8000 sold on Amazon.com has a 1500 mAh battery listed. Did Verizon really increase the capacity of the battery?

First of all, THE CUBE WAS NEVER A D-PAD. Secondly, IT’S STILL A CUBE. If you don’t believe me, open up that image in a photo app, enlarge it a bit, and increase the brightness slightly. You’ll see that the lines that make the 3D cubic shape are still there, plain as day. They just took the proper geometrical shape and deformed it a bit, making it softer and more rounded, just like they did with the corners of the phone casing itself. I’m guessing part of the reason was so they had a place to squeeze in the Samsung logo after replacing it with the Verizon logo on the top of the phone. Bottom line: it’s not a d-pad, it’s still a cube, and I’m sure it will function exactly the same way.

The question I want answered is when will the new Omnia 2 actually be released??? I have searched and searched and everything says July…. but considering it is now almost October we know that July was not correct.
