AT&T, Verizon, the iPhone, and billions spent on Mobile Networks

By: Peter Chubb | September 23, 2009 | 3 Comments

We all know that we are trying to fight our way out of a recession; as a result, most companies have reduced spending and laying off a huge number of its workforce. It seems that AT&T and Verizon have yet to see that memo; both companies are still pouring billions of dollars on their mobile networks.

Both AT&T Inc. (T) and Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) hope that by spending and improving their mobile networks, they will benefit from this as time goes on. Both network carriers know that they need the best that they can offer, which the iPhone is reliant on.

It is no secret that Verizon wish to get the iPhone as we recently reported that Verizon do not have any good handsets, so to get what is said to be the best handset will be a great boost to the company. The Wall Street Journal has reported that both Verizon and AT&T have spent as much as $35 billion combined in 2009 alone, much the same as what they spent in 2008.

Well I don’t think that it’s time for people to be spending good money on flashy smartphones. I am frugal in these times and I want a phone that gives me good value for money which is why I have a Tracfone. I can make long distance and international calls for the same price as a local call, roaming is free and reception is great.

I certainly see the benefits of these network upgrades. Coverage in my area is better than ever. Although I’m on Verizon’s network, I actually use the Straight Talk Unlimited prepaid plan which btw costs about half of what VZ’s unlimited plans will set you back.
