BlackBerry Tour Trackball Problems: Have you been affected?

We have more feedback for you now, regarding the persistant trackball problem that has been frequent on the BlackBerry Tour. Seems like there is actually a significant amount of you who have been suffering from this exact issue.

As reported from IntoMobile, the recall rates for Sprint’s BlackBerry Tour are now reaching past the 50 percent stage, much as we mentioned in our previous post yesterday.

Is now thought that BlackBerry are planning to address this issue by releasing the ‘Essex’, which apparently comes with an upgraded trackball. Another issue here is that RIM could of avoided the problems with the trackballs, due to quality control totalling an extra 2%-3% in manufacturing costs.

What are your thoughts on this? If we owned a BlackBerry Tour, we’d be pretty unhappy that RIM are just planning to release a new Tour to combat the problem, rather than focus on the problems that customers have at the moment.

  1. David B. says:

I have the Verizon version of the Tour, and the trackball has intermittant vertical sticking issues. Sometimes I slide, and slide, and slide the trackball sideways, and nothing happens, then suddenly it jumps. I’d hoped that the new OS (yeah, where’s that) might address the issue. If RIM decides to address this with a new model, I would certainly hope that existing customers would get it on exchange, or at least for the “new contract” amount, even if in the middle of the contract.

We own two Tours and have no issues with the trackball at all.

  3. Mike W. says:

I work for a company that has hundreds of Blackberries. This trackball issue has only occurred on this Tour model. We’ve tried exchanging it 3 times. On all of the replacements, the same trackball issue reoccurred after a few weeks. The Tour is a piece of crap.
