AT&T clarify improvements with mobile broadband network
By: Peter Chubb | September 18, 2009 | Leave a CommentFollowing on from our post about the “AT&T Wireless Experience“, we have had a little clarification from AT&T. You can read the full details below:
AT&T announced last week details of our rollout plans for HSPA 7.2 technology, which will provide a considerable speed boost to our 3G mobile broadband network – which is already the nation’s fastest. In addition, we’re adding additional backhaul capacity to cell sites, which add critical capacity to the network to support today’s unprecedented growth in mobile data traffic as well as the future demands of next-generation 4G networks.
AT&T plans to begin deployment of HSPA 7.2 in six major U.S. cities, with initial service availability expected by the end of the year. AT&T plans to deploy HSPA 7.2 in 25 of the nation’s 30 largest markets by the end of 2010, and to reach about 90 percent of its existing 3G network footprint with HSPA 7.2 by the end of 2011.
In addition, we recently completed deployments of 850 MHz spectrum in New York, Atlanta, and Houston, an initiative that will substantially expand the wireless spectrum serving 3G customers. We’ll be deploying this spectrum in hundreds of markets across the country, with about 90 percent of those deployments complete today.
