Flash Player for iPhone: Are we still bothered?

Flash Player for iPhone: Are we still bothered?

By: Alan Ng | September 11, 2009 | 32 Comments

With the recent release of iPhone firmware 3.1 OS, many had hoped that it would include some features that you have requested most. One of these has to be standard flash support, but once again Apple failed to support it. Our question to iPhone users is – Are you still bothered about the lack of decent flash support?

With the sheer amount of other features that the iPhone 3.1 brings to the table, you may argue that flash support is not really needed anymore. But with rival phones including the latest flash support as standard, is this still a feature that you want Apple to introduce?

Let us know your thoughts on the current situation with flash support, and if it is still a feature that you would like to see in the future.

I’m bothered that the Iphone does not support flash. If apple engineers are as bright as they make themselves out to be they should have figured this out. Flash is everywhere. It stinks that a device hyped as much as an iphone and as expensive can’t do something that other more common devices can.

Of course it bothers me. Frankly, I’m suspicious that Apple actively wants to prevent Flash from finding its way onto the iPhone – perhaps, even, with a little reinforcement from AT&T. iPhone users already used double and treble the data of other smartphones. Can you imagine the increase in bandwidth used if the iPhone could view more than the videos on Youtube and Dailymotion? Would that not stand to cut into Apple’s bottom line through iTunes, if a user could access Hulu, ESPN360 or NFL Network and watch their videos and shows?

Mark my words: Flash will never be on this Apple device. That would give the user too much freedom and risk Apple’s bottom line.

IMO the reason Flash isn’t included is a considered choice. It’s either a licensing issue with Adobe or Apple are concerned it will devalue their app store. Either way it’s a feature I want, especially when I’m stone walled by a Flash site or app and have to go to a desktop to view it or use its functionality.

Are you nuts?? It is essential and inevitable. DO IT NOW!

I have to believe that flash is not on the iphone because it would allow better web based apps outside of the control of the app store.

I know as a designer myself, it would be a lot easier to get creative and launch a great iphone based game or app via simply using flash.

That’s exactly it… Cutting into iTunes profits. Why would anyone buy episodes of say… The daily show when they could easily browse to comedycentral.com and watch it for free?

  • lostbiker

yes ithink it needs to be done. I do not like not being able to view certain sites because of the lack of a flash player.

  • Rkochco

Come on, Apple … How can you unilaterally determine that users of your device (iPhone) are not allowed to view nearly half the content available on the Internet today simply because you don’t want to implement a functionality that has been embraced by every other device or system or application for nearly a decade!!! I’ve had Flash on a computer since it was invented as Splash and not even a glimmer yet in Macromedia’s eye.

As a self-proclaimed leader in computer technology couldn’t we please get this ubiquitous utility added to the feature set of our glorious iphones. Please? Adobe?

Can’t believe the iPhone still won’t play flash vids. Biggest downfall of the device – very disappointed

  • RXSE7EN

If jailbroken, you can install iMobileCinema which is a Flash video plugin. It works.

No flash is a serious bummer. I am on an iPhone now and some websites are only flash so it really does inhibit normal use of the Internet. I think ATT’s network is seriously lacking anyway as is however. In manhattan after the 3gs was released dropped calls were an every call experience. iPhone users pay a big premium for the data they consume as it is right now I would like to note. AT&T needs to over deliver on it’s network as other phones in the coming years begin to rival/match the functionality of the iPhone but utilize other networks which I have heard are better but i do not know to be the case.

I tether my iPhone sometimes and hulu doesn’t work through the tethers bandwith as is now. I am sure that 3G as a spec can do hulu buy when one tethers it limits speed to 500 Kbps and hulu simply doesn’t work. Espn 360 works though with the move player. (it isn’t flash as someone else commented).

I love the iPhone it is one of the best devices I’ve ever known to exist. It is the first truly functional handheld computer. I would like to test a palm pre

It’s a big shame that the Flash player is still not available on the iPhone. Shame on Apple!

  • LarryB

Not having Flash support is extremely irritating! I have been a mobile device user since the Psion3 and manufacturers have refused to put all of the support in place to let mobile users break away from PC dependence. I think Apple is afraid they will sell fewer larger devices if they add bluetooth keyboard / mouse support and application support such as Flash.

There is without a doubt some conspiracy behind Flash been delayed to work on the iPhone. Yes, there is a sheer amount of features on the 3.1, but YES we are still bothered that there is no decent flash support. I guess we can all go and jailbreak our phones and it seems there are solutions out there that do most of the things we miss (flash, run multiple apps, installers etc etc).

However, as I a use mine “mission critical” I do not want to risk any non-operation of my iPhone.

oh…forgot to mention that i am a web designer and looking at my sites with broken links due to flash makes me a bit sad…

Come on ! its a must, what they ******* about at?

  • http://websolutionpros.com Doug Rickenback

Of course we’re bothered! Marketing a device as “The whole web, not just parts of it” (or something similar) and then leaving out Flash is like selling a car without an engine.

IANAL, but maybe a class-action suit would spur some movement on this front?

  • Joe

I won’t buy an iphone until flash support is included.

  • Ashlin

I do feel this is a travesty. Apple should offer flash for users rather than a non-realistic Internet experience.

  • Pat

With only partial support, the iPhone will only succeed long term as a starter device. People will move “up” to a more full-featured device if this doesn’t get rectified.

Apple missed the PC bus, even though they were already on it before IBM. I guess this would just be a repeat performance.

  • Dooglesnak

Is anyone still bothered? What a stupid question!

    Internet made easier???

  • Jeremy

its a matter of when not if.

the other thing to consider with flash player on the iphone is how it will affect its already dismal battery life seeings how Flash player accesses resources natively.
Which is another issue altogether, flash for the Mac/PC is written for x86 whereas the iPhone and even Android devices have ARM processors.

  • Probman

The iphone “phone” can’t even send animated gif mms so why would we expect the iphone “internet” to have flash. Actually, most of what the iphone does it does crap – just think of sms and email ringtones! And what about that toy camera? My 3G iphone is just 5 months old and can’t take video – what?! No wonder people jailbreak it. I haven’t done that to mine yet but I’m seriously angry with these basic deficiencies on the iphone, facilities that even the basic mobile phones had many years ago. The iphone is very expensive and the service provider’s plans are expensive so we have a right to expect and demand these basic facilities. Apple tempted us into buying what are in reality very low level phones and it’s time they came up with some goods. Stop tinkering with the thing – get it fixed! Someone mentioned class action. That’s a good idea.

  • AJ

APPLE, Steve Jobs, Come ON… start support FLASH Player on the iPhone 3gs….what are you waiting for…
HURRY the F UP! Please! Life is TOO Short!

  • Powers

Instead of the iPhone conforming to content for flash I think the content should conform for iPhone I stand by apple with it or w/o it

  • Erik

Yes, it is a real shame that such a wonderful device (which costs 700 – 800 euro) does not allow you to view 50% (if not more) of internet content!

    Such a shame!

  • Zach

I agree. Hey has anyone tried video hamster yet? I heard you don’t need to jailbrake the phone for it to work

  • http://www.hansup.be hans

    No flash? No iphone!

  • Henry

It’s a pity that Apple say no, as there are websites which uses flash and I can’t access them using a iphone. Apple ought to come out with its version of flash !!

  • SharonACD

Yes, I want the flash player on my iPhone so I can watch videos on hulu. I’d even be willing to pay for some kind of hulu player.

  • Rach

Having the same sentiments as other iPhone users out there.

My main purpose of buying iPhone is to surf the net but very disappointed that iPhone does not support Flash!
I should have get a Netbook instead.

Hope that Apple can hear the voices from the consumers.
“We need Flash Player on iPhone, pls make it possible!!!”

  • Frank II

iPhones were produced by Apple, not AT&T. It is no excuse for Apple to limit the iphones and cost us more money like we need to have our photos transferred from the iphones to computers, instead of iTunes.

  • David

I have always resisted Flash because it's so bloated and ugly. With Adobe finally getting with HTML5 it'll gradually fade away simply because there's better technology emerging. I'm on my 3rd iPhone generation, and love it! I strongly support Android and applaud Google for giving Apple some serious competition finally (Symbian was OK in its day, and Windows Mobile was never in the race), but the iPhone is still well in front, despite adverse publicity.
