Apple’s tablet and Snow Leopard OS

By: Alan Ng | September 3, 2009 | 2 Comments

It has been reported that the freshly released Snow Leopard software will be the operating system of choice, for when Apple announce and release their upcoming Tablet PC.

Thats according to this article from BGR, who have stated that it is pretty impossible to find someone who doesn’t think Apple are going to release a tablet or even several tablet devices this month.

BGR believes that some of the touch-friendly features found within Snow Leopard are more than enough evidence to suggest that Snow Leopard will be prefered to the iPhone OS.

One key factor for this reasoning, is the OS X Soft Keyboard which is now very touch friendly. Then you have other UI features, such as the scrolling layout which could be touch-enabled for the tablet.

What are your views on this? Do you think the Apple tablet will run on Snow Leopard?

The advantage apple has over other platforms is that they are a closed hardware system and they have a software distribution modle proven to work. Apple I am sure sees the software distribution and the percentage they receive as the growing portion of their revenue. Not to mention the the money they receive from the cell carriers. So the answer to the os question will be based one two things. 1. Does apple want to it’s share of the app store revenue from the device? 2. Do they want the money from a substidized device by the carriers? The answer to both these questions is clearly yes. Thus apple will probably offer two models. 1. A smaer device running iPhone os that can be purchased with or without substidized cost and ability to run iPhone os apps. 2. The second will be a larger device that runs full mac osx but perhaps they can integrate software distribution through iTunes to anable them to still receive thileir cut. The larger device may have a DVD bruner/player but don’t be supprised if it is an external drive following in the footsteps of the mb air.

I have learned to love and hate Apple.

I love their clean design and their UNIX operating system (though I dislike their graphics users interface).

I come to fear them though, they are a ruthless and clever bunch. I am certain if they have the oppurtunity they would attempt to monopolize the computer industry and abuse us all. Its not so far from the imagination, after all look what Intel has done to their competitors and to us.
