Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Lack of ZFS File System Support
By: Alan Ng | September 2, 2009
It has been reported that the final version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard that was shipped to customers last week, does not contain Sun’s ZFS File System Support.
As reported from MacRumors, it is thought that the removal of ZFS support is due to licensing issues, even though it had appeared in versions of the Leopard software.
Data storage expert Robin Harris has backed up claims that licensing issues is the key problem here, as he states:
”Sun’s licensing demands killed the deal. Sun prefers the CDDL [Common Development and Distribution License] and may have asked for some extra protections, including patent indemnification, that caused Apple to reconsider the business risk of ZFS.”
We’ll update you on this problem when we find out more. Head over to MacRumors for the full article.

Robin Harris doesn’t know what he is talking about. Mac OS X already has CDDL code in it (DTrace) and it has been a non-issue for Apple.
Please, stop spreading Harris’ FUD.
