iPhone Users: Verizon or happy with AT&T?

iPhone Users: Verizon or happy with AT&T?

By: Jamie Pert | September 2, 2009 | 47 Comments

Many people believe that the fact that AT&T have exclusivity on Apple’s iPhone means that AT&T have been doing extremely well, however according to a recent article on WallStreetJournal things may not be quite as good as they seem.

WSJ seem to think that AT&T’s profit margins have really suffered lately, and for AT&T to do well they would need to have a much larger customer base, one thing that could spell disaster for AT&T is if Verizon began to offer the iPhone.

If Verizon begin to offer the iPhone many people who are unhappy with AT&T will probably jump ship, while this is good news for Verizon it could cause AT&T to really see the downfall of their low profit margins.

Would you leave AT&T if the iPhone became available on Verizon?

As long as the Verizon cost for the same service was not significantly higher, I would change to Verizon.
AT&T offers rollover minutes which is nice but the service is not as good as Verizon.

  • Annie

Verizon is the worst company in the world! If they were the only company to offer cell phone service, cable, internet and phone service, I would do without all of them. I would send smoke signals before I would use Verizon for anything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Dave Cottrell

AT&T has zero coverage around here, I learned that the hard way, bought an iPhone and tried it… no service. I’d love to have Verizon offer the iPhone, I’d be one of those people camping out overnight in front of their door.

  • Nate

I will switch to Verizon the minute they release an iPhone. I was on Verizon before I had the iPhone, and made the switch only because 1). I use Apple for computer products already and 2). I hate BlackBerry/other smartphone devices. The service with Verizon in the Northeast where I live is far superior to AT&T, even with their purchase of Unicel.

  • Kristyn

I would leave at&t if Verizon carried the iPhone, hands down.

  • http://PRNews Gentry

AT&T is by far the worst coverage of ANY company. It is like Cricket with influenza. I pray every day that it goes under, leaving the iPhone contract for Verizon. What an immense toilet of a cell phone provider. If you do not have the iPhone, AT&T is not worth the switch.

  • Marco

I think the iPhone is the best phone on the market but I have resisted the urge to get one, despite being a phone/technology snob, because I refuse to compromise on the quality of I am used to getting from Verizon. VZW is the most reliable wireless service out there and yes, the minute the iPhone comes to Verizon I will own the top of the line model.

i would get the iphone as soon as verizon got it becauase at&t as bad coverage.

  • Jessica

it bothers the heck out of me that they offered the iPhone to verizon to begin with, but, as verizon put it, “they couldn’t come to a contract that was mutually benefical”.
helloooooo? verizon would have gained tens of millions of subscribers. I’m sorry if that’s not good enough for you.

Fact still is, I’ve had verizon forever, and I hate it. I never get service. Around here, the best one is U.S. Cellular. Still, I would be completely overjoyed if verizon took up the iPhone (but onlyyyy if they kept apps the exact same, no matter how much that jacked the price up), and I too would be camping out, except probably for a week beforehand. (:

I have Verizon now it since it is far superior to AT&T in this area. Since we go to disaster areas Verizon is the one that always works. I really want the iPhone but will not switch to AT&T. Last 3 rumors I have heard is 11-09, 3-10 and 11-10. Any one here different?

  • Susan

I’m with Verizon, and would LOVE to have the iPhone available. I have AT&T as an ISP, they are HORRIBLE. I can’t imagine their phone service is any better (had them about 10 years ago and hated them, sounds like they aren’t any better now =)

  • Rick

I switched to AT&T for the iPhone for 2 weeks. As much as I loved the iPhone, I switched back to Verizon today. I already miss the iPhone.

What I found. I have many friends in denial. They live in areas with poor coverage but deal with it because they love their iPhone. I cannot deal with poor coverage so I had to switch back.

If the iPhone ever comes to Verizon, I might switch phones.

  • MLB

The same montra has been heard over and over again. I would get an Iphone if it were on the Verizon Network. 25 percent of Iphone users left Verizon only for the phone, NOT THE SERVICE while many more including myself continue with the BEST carrier Verizon anxiously awaiting an Iphone.
I currently use an Itouch for work uses and a Verizon Blackberry until Verizon will get an Iphone. I’m not sure why it is taking so long???

  • Herb

I am an Alltel customer who is making the switch over to Verizon due to their purchase of my provider. As Alltel customers we used Verizon towers almost entirely and have appreciated the quality and coverage of their service.

Now, as a Verison “Newby”, I am anxiously awaiting the Iphone as is the writer above… and most ALL of other Verizon users!

  • aramis

I also left Verizon for ATT on the first iPhone release. ATT is a joke. I live in San Diego, and there are so many dead zones, while my friend standing next to me has no problem at all. I never had any issues with Verizon and all their service was great (customer and coverage). This is the reason I haven’t upgraded to 3g or 3gs – I don’t want to commit to another 2-year contract with ATT. If Verizon starts selling iPhones-I’ll Come a-Runnin

  • Wanda

Haven’t heard anything different. But I and have been a long time VZ customer and am just waiting for them to come out with the iPhone so I can switch phones.

Come on VZ we are all waiting, make the deal!!!

  • TiltYourHead

I switched from Verizon to AT&T in order to use the iPhone. My contract is up next summer and it the iPhone lands on Verizon about that same time I would gladly switch back to Verizon.

AT&T is not far from horrible, that being said the iPhone is such a great device that I am able to over look many of AT&T’s issues. However, if Verizon started carrying the iPhone they would have my business.

  • Azzzzzzvvdd

You obviously have never used Verizon and if you did I don’t know what planet you are on because Verizon has great service and I have never been disappointed with them. I would buy the iPhone the hour it came out for Verizon. Much better than AT&T.

  • James

I switched from verizon to ATT reluctantly leaving good service, to have an iPhone. So far I give ATT 90% on the coverage. I live outside of Philadelphia and seem to have acceptable service everywhere but sitting on my sofa next to my living room window, where I get zero service and cannot even send a SMS.

I feel like a pushover for leaving verizon’s excellent service, but they snoozed and they lose my business! That being said, I LOVE the iPhone and will definitely switch back to Verizon once they come out w/the Iphone and work out their bugs.

  • hoc

i hope that someone from apple reads this when i say, verizon is awesome, and signing with them to give verizon subscribers the iphone would be a smart move because me and many of my friends (who are faithful verizon subscribers) would buy an iphone immediately. verizon has great service everywhere i’ve been and with their switch to LTE linked with the iphone, verizon would be number one.

  • icee1

Oh, please, oh, please, oh, please Verizon would you offer the iPhone?

Was with AT&T awhile back and had absolutely no service in our house (in Southern CA) and had horrible reception & service anywhere else we’d go.

Switched to Verizon and have had perfect service everywhere
    we’ve gone.

    Love, love, love Verizon!!!!

  • http://product-reviews.net Braxton

I would pay however much I needed to cancel my contract with AT&T!!!! I was one of those that had Verizon before AT&T and went to them for the iPhone I HATE AT&T their service is awful that’s putting it nicely, also 3G is not reliable.

  • Scott

Before AT&T bought Cingular, Cingular was the 2nd least reliable provider behind AT&T. I would rank Verizon, putting a message in a bottle & throwing it in the ocean hoping it reaches the person I was trying to get in touch with, and AT&T in that order… 1, 2, 3… I have resisted switching for 2.5 generations of iPhones, dealt with the horendous Windows Mobile 5 and 6 & sluggish Blackberry OS’ strictly because I refused to switch to AT&T.

BUT!!! If history is any indication, Verizon would figure out a way to cripple the iPhone to the point where I’d rather go back to throwing bottles in the ocean. My Blackberry Curve was capable of GPS and WiFi, but Verizon decided we’d all be better off if I just overpaid them for crap services. The only reason I own a GPS is because VZNavigator is garbage. I would rather pay any coffee shop $2 or $3 here to use their internet on a daily basis than to pay Verzion $30-50 extra for tethering.

  • Scott

d’oh. Not crap services, crap features. i.e., VZNavigator. a broken Google Maps & bbMaps

  • James – Long Island

I would welcome the iphone to the verizon network with open arms. AT&T just doesn’t have the infrastructure or the customer base for the iphone. I’m currently a Verizon customer using the Blackberry Tour, but I would love to; and be willing to lay out the money needed to have the ability to have and use an iphone. PLEASE Apple Co., please allow Verizon Wireless to have rights to the iphone ASAP!!!!!!!!!

  • Henry

I am on Verizon and yes I want the Iphone as does my wife she would definitely change providers as she’s with AT&T. There service is terrible, I get reception many places she cant even in most buildings. How they do that!

  • Will

Yes I would leave AT&T the second Verizon offers the IPhone. I have had so much trouble with AT&T. AT&T has bad customer service, they over charge, and they have horrible cellular service.

Verizon is so much better than AT&T.

  • Mike

I have Verizon and refuse to buy an iPhone because it’s only on AT&T. I would buy one the second it came out for Verizon. Verizon is by far one the best companies I have ever done business with. In 2004, when my home in Florida was hit by 3 hurricanes, Verizon sent me a letter that stated that they noticed my minutes usage was well above normal and that I lived in an area effected by the Hurricanes. So they assumed the increase in minutes was due to the storms and wiped all of my minutes off my bill, basically giving me a free month of cell use. Now ask yourself, would your wireless company do that for you? This is one of the many reasons I will never leave Verizon…no matter how badly I want an iPhone.

  • Marisa

Jessica you must live near the center of the earth because I’ve been all over this country, in big cities and remote area’s in between and I’ve ALWAYS gotten cell phone service with Verizon.

I’ve had them for years and as tempting as the Iphone is, I refuse to leave Verizon. Their coverage is flawless as well as their customer service.

Meanwhile my roommate with her Iphone has to sit outside on our balcony every day because she doesn’t cell service in our apt.

I’m holding out for the Iphone to come to Verizon or at last the Palm Pre that is coming in early 2010.

  • http://www.spudgames.com Jade

The only reason I don’t have an iPhone is because I am waiting for Verizon to offer it. AT&T’s service does not work here.

  • Mitsi

Clarity/quality is key to who I chose as my provider. I’d loooooove to have an iPhone. LOVE. But there is absolutely no way that I would ever endure what my friends go through with ATT. How long do I have to wait for the Verizon verson?

  • emily

Well, I’ll have to say That My brother In law has had verizon And He switched to AT&T because he walked into tverizon To get the blackberry storm. And they were all just sitting there. Nobody offered him help. so He walked next door to AT&T and bought they iphone. He loves it. And Im 14 Im about to get my first phone. But my dad Says it has to Be verizon Because that’s his plan. And if the Iphone Comes out for Verizon I might get it. It really doesnt matter Which service it’s for. My sister has AT&T and she loves her iphone. My dad has Verizon and he loves that service. so to Me it Doesn’t Matter Which Service it’s for. they both offer the same thing. unlimited texting and all that so why does anyone care what service it’s for?

    please respond

  • kirsten

I am counting the days when I can get rid of AT&T and go back to Verizon. I have absolutely zero coverage in my own house. I absolutely hate AT&T and I was super happy with Verizon. If the iPhone doesn’t offer Verizon I just may have to ultimately give up the phone.

  • Steve

I am a long time Sprint user, Sprint is the best carrier in Palos Verdes, CA period. Verizon is a close second. ATT is absolutely horrible. The only reason that I am using it now is that our whole department is to now use the iPhone for work. I would switch immediately to Verizon or better yet Sprint if a CDMA option became available.

Also, data speeds on Verizon are by far the best in the country.

  • Michelle

I would never leave AT&T no matter what Verizon were to offer.

  • Cory

I have been with Verizon for over 12 years. I actually switched to Sprint (Nextel) and AT&T and went back to Verizon within 30 days. While Verizon does have some issues…my experience is they are a far superior choice to the others. I think they have the best customer service (has been slipping a little of late)… If Verizon could start selling the iPhone…it would be the end of AT&T and Sprint.

  • Dan

Where I live ATT (former cingular) has better coverage. My problem with Verizon is they have hidden charges for everything and they base everything on the size of the profit margin, so if they have to take less on the Iphone itself they will probably raise it somewhere else. I can only imagine the free for all at Verizon if they didnt have ATT competition and Vodaphone didnt own 45% of them. Your phone would truly be a luxury item then.

  • ejmorton

my contract is up on 11-2010…I will renew with Verizon only if they have the iPhone. ATT works well here in SoCal, so come on Verizon…pull through for your customers!

  • Jason

I have had every single carrier out there from all the contracted carriers like T mobile Att Helio Sprint to the pay as you go and as far as im concerned verizon is the best ive have always gone back to them and WHEN not if verizon comes out with it i will be the first in line for it cause AT&T sucks butt hole

  • Greg

A good friend of mine works for ATT as a repairman. He came over a couple weeks ago to my apt. on the northside of Chicago. He took out his brand new 3Gs Iphone and asked me to take a look at it. It actually had 0 bars and said “NO SERVICE”! My Blackberry Storm had all bars glowing! He told me that even on the beach (which is ummmm, out in the open) his phone said “NO SERVICE”. At that moment, I was very happy to be a Verizon customer. He said that Verizon is actually going to be coming out with the Iphone…but then he said “something like it”. I tried to get more out of him, but that was all I got. Since he works for ATT, I really want to believe him. I will wait in line for however long to get my new Verizon Iphone! Please, please please get the Iphone, Verizon!!! You will make so many people happy…even a few ATT repairmen!

  • Ter

Well you might as well get use to living were your at for the rest of your life. If not you will be sitting there with an Iphone (or any at&t phone for that matter) that won’t pick up signal. Like stated earlier. stand on your porch or running around the yard to get signal and it still drops calls. I already dropped at&t wireless internet for verizon mifi and a pc card. My children have thier own ipod’s They are able to connect with the verizon mifi (Wifi) as well as mine and my husbands laptops. The mifi connects up to 5 devices at once wirelessly. That’s sevice. I can also connect my Iphone to it as well. We have 3 at&t phones. Doesn’t matter which one you get. Still same crappy service. I’m in the process of of picking out what verzon phones I want. I don’t think I’m going to grab another high priced phone right now. Probley go with one of the black berries that cost 50 bucks with the option of up to 4 free phones. GOOD BYE IPHONE. You’ll make a good IPOD TOUCH. Hopefully verizon will get the iphone or something close to it from apple. These past 6 years with at&t/cinuglar went from fair to bad. at&t has sold out so many towers. (when they first invested in the iphone). They had to sell towers just to get other towers updated to handle the iphones. I messed up when I moved. NO SERVICE. Still the same service on the road tho. I guess it’ll be worth my sainity being able to sit in my house and use the phone. Tehe. or everytime you know you are driving up on your dead spots you have to tell someone you’re fixing to loose singnal. Call them back and talk 10 more minutes before you have to do the same thing again. Death to at&t. Oh and don’t get me started on sms or waiting on your voicemail to download and don’t have enough service to call the voice mail. VERIZON IS THE WAY TO GO. They are more equipted to handle the iphone.

  • Ter

As Jeff Dunham said, You know you never get to experiance the end of the commercial. “Can You hear he now! *Static* crcrcrcr.. That should be at&t’s commercial. What a waste to the incredible Iphone. Unsurpassed. Just the provider sucks.

  • PattyL

I got rid of my iphone. Got tired of the dropped calls. The battery life sucked. But now I get even more than ever. Am considering switching to Verizon even though I have to pay penalty. AT&T CS is just awful. Their cell service has declined greatly over the last couple of years.

  • Doug

I left Verizon just a couple of months ago to get my iphone and join AT and T. I have never been happier. I was on Sprint and then Verizon and now AT and T. They have better service than I had experienced with Verizon. Verizon cripples their phones so that you have no choices like you do with the App Store. There are always extra charges on your bill that they say they will give you credit for but never do. Their phone selection is horrible. Thier smartphones are “dumbed down”. I love AT and T and even if the iphone came to Verizon I will never go back.

  • mchitwood

I have been w/ VZ since my 1st cell phone. I will NOT renew when my contract is up in 5/10 if NO iphone is on VZ is firmly set. Storm is CRAP and VZ as had many subscribers stuck in contracts that are soon to expire! Just wait and see us bail out to ATT for iphone. I live and work in major metro areas and have great coverage on any network. Android is NOT the answer to iphone! I can just imagine all the hacks and virus problems! Maybe Norton and MacaFEE can provide antivirus updates for the google phones at VZ. I AM VERY DISSAPOINTED W/VZ and NO IPHONE!!!

  • Micah

I had VZW before I got the iPhone and switched. I hate the AT&T service and the 3g is slow and the calling network is lousy. And it’s expensive! I would go with VZW the moment they get the iPhone!

  • Kyle

I’m happy with AT&T. The roll over minutes are really usefull and coverage in Los Angeles is pretty darn good. There are a few trouble spots but AT&T makes up with it by having fast 3G service. AT&T is wonderful. Had Verizon, and it sucked to where I threw my phone across my room because it took so long to send a text message on 3 bars of service. It’s frustrating.

PS: That text messge never sent
