AMD’s Magny-Cours 12-core CPU

Recently at a Hot Chips conference in Palo Alto AMD spoke about a new chip code-named “Magny-Cours”, this chip will be available n 2010 and has 12-cores, this will not be a chip used in standard desktop PC’s and will be seen mainly in servers.
The “Magny-Cours” chips will take two six-core Istanbul processors and then merge them into a single socket chip, to do this they will have to down-clock the chips so that they consume less power, this should also help to stop overheating.
The fact that these chips are now being developed for a 2010 release date may indicate that we will see 12 core desktop processors in the future, however AMD have not mentioned any plans for 12 core desktop processors.
