iPhone TomTom Car Kit: App downloaded, where is the hardware?

With the recent release of the TomTom iPhone app many are still waiting for a Car Kit for iPhone before they purchase the app, well you may not have to wait much longer as Engadget has recently reported that the Car Kit has now been approved by the FCC.

The Car Kit for iPhone seems to consist of a mount, dock, charger and will also enhance the GPS accuracy, no official price or release date has been confirmed yet, however as we find out more we will keep you posted.

My friend downloaded the TomTom for iPhone application from the App Store in the UK, it set him back £60, however he is very pleased with it so far, and as soon as the Car Kit is released he will not hesitate to buy it. To find out more check out Engadget, or see the FCC details here.

humph! For the cost of the car kit, you can get a standalone tomtom unit, which has newer maps and far more features than the iphone software.

Yes but if you already own an iPhone……..

Indeed, a stand-alone TomTom does have more features, though using addresses from you ‘phone doesn’t always happen (depending upon ‘phone).

I’ll be waiting until as and when TomTom bring out an app that includes HQ traffic. I’d then happily dump my TomTom One XL, and stick to the iPhone – just one item to carry around, and I would be less likely to leave it in the car (and therefore less likely to have my window smashed by a thief).

I have downloaded this already too. Really works well so far, but it could do with the car kit. You will need to mount it somehow anyway, why not the way it was intended. I think they have rushed the app out to comptete with the likes of navigon and copilot.
