Cash for Clunkers: Toys ‘R’ Us offers crib version

Before you ask, no your not reading the article title wrong, over at the On Deadline site they are reporting that Toys “R” Us have started their own Cash for Clunkers scheme in which you can trade in your old baby products for a discount on a new product.

The scheme which starts today and ends on September the 20th allows people to trade in their old cribs, car seats and other children’s items for a 20% discount on newer products. The idea behind the scheme is to help people clear out their old and possibly unsafe child products in exchange for newer products which meet the latest safety standards, and lets face it, its hard to sniff at 20% discount when it comes to costly baby gear.

For now the scheme is being limited to US stores, but depending on it’s success they are also considering the same or similar scheme for Canadian customers. If I am being honest, I think this a much more worthy and well thought out scheme that the original Cash For Clunkers government scheme.

O.K. What happens to the clunker car seat/crib/high chair??? Is it thrown into a landfill?? I have been a new mother looking online for awhile to recycle my old car seat. It’s next to impossible. Yes…. you can not (as they claim) legally put a car seat on craigslist or some other online site to sell. I understand that. But I wonder what you can do with it? I live in Portland Oregon, a city usually ripe with recycling ways, however there is no place here to recycle a car seat. I’ve checked it out. I was hopeful when the babiesrus site offered their deal. Trade in they say? Safety they say? O.k. then back it up on your site with some kind of statement saying what you are going to to with the stuff??

    Very good question Jaimie.

I would immagine that the items you give to them in exchange for the 20% discount, they will then sell on to the relevant recycling companies to break down and seperate the different materials for recycling, I would immagine a fair amount of the products will be able to be broken down and recycled.

That I would immagine is where they are generating the 20% they are able to pass on to you (I would immagine).
