PS3′s Uncharted 2: ‘Impossible’ on Xbox 360 – Naughty Dog

PS3′s Uncharted 2: ‘Impossible’ on Xbox 360 – Naughty Dog

By: Alan Ng | August 27, 2009 | 22 Comments

The Co-president of Naughty Dog Christophe Balestra, has recently said that due to the technical aspects of the upcoming PS3 exclusive Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, it would be ‘impossible’ to recreate the game for the Xbox 360.

According to Eurogamer, Balestra made the comments in a recent interview with Ars Technica. He gave plenty of reasons why he would make such a bold admission, but summed it up pretty clearly here:

“I guarantee that this game couldn’t be working on Xbox 360. It would be impossible. I’m 100 per cent sure of this. “You can play the entire game without loading. We don’t require an install. We’re doing all the post-processing effects on the SPUs [Synergistic Processing Units]. The quality of the depth of field we have, you can’t do that on the Xbox.”

He also listed the usual ‘Blu-Ray having more disk space’ reason too, and revealed that the sequel will use ‘all’ of the PS3′s processing power, compared to only 30-40 % which was used for Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

More of his comments over at Eurogamer. We are wondering what Xbox 360 owners think of this, so let us know your thoughts below.

Well obviously this couldn’t be done because there is no cell on the 360, that is the only thing holding the 360 back. Then again they have never developed for the 360 and so do not know the power that the 360 GPU has. It is around 2x more powerful than the PS3′s GPU which is why Rage is able to be played at 60fps on the 360 compared to 30 on the PS3. I think that Uncharted 1 could easily be done on the 360 with better graphics than the PS3, maybe as good as uncharted 2. The PS3 is harder to develop for and this probably took some of naughty dogs time, and if they were to invest the same time on 360 they would achieve a great result. About the 360′s CPU, it’s a triple core with 2 hardware threads per core, think about it – it’s a Core i7 with 1 less core. So its pretty powerful. Well we’ll just have to wait to see what the 360 developers will do.

Yawn. It’s in their contract to say every exclusive on the PS3 is not possible on the 360.

I do hope they’re right though and we get a stunning 1080p game but I have a feeling it’ll be the usual jagged 720p fair we’re all used to.

Yawn, more sales orientated BS. Do they never get tired of this?

I played the Beta and I can 100% agree with this. Although some graphics are good on Xbox nothing compares to Uncharted 2.

Xbox is really coming to the end of its time now I used to play my 360 same amount as PS3 but now I barely ever play it the PS3 in my opinion has a greater class of games.

  • Slippy Sloppy

I as a person who owns both consoles but gets more from my 360 I hope you’re right as I want to see more powerful games and graphics without having to wait for the next gen.

The downside is my PS3 is starting to overheat very easily and the screen keeps cutting out unless it’s very well ventilated.

    @ theunknown

please do not make “technical” comments about CPUs or GPUs. The 360 CPU is not a CISC chipset it’ RISC… more closely related to Apple’s old G5 PowerPC… VMX anyone? 360′s GPU is more powerful but you must look at the system as a whole. The cell is actually pretty good with graphics. *gasp*

    -end of line-

How about you do like Final Fantasy did, and come with more than one disk for the 360? O’ because the game must be made on blu-ray…..

Loading Screens? Im pretty sure a few loading screens will not ruin the game nor should it be part of the reason “It could never be made for the 360.”

This sounds like nothing more than to hype up the PS3 before the console price drop wars begin.

He is 100% sure that this game could have never been made for the 360…. Well, I guess your right if your not willing to bend some things to make it work on a differnt console.

To bad to, Uncharted 2 would have sold like crazy as a cross platform game.

    Slippy Sloppy,

720p does not cause jaggies. I’ve just upgraded from 40″ 720p Samsung tv to a 40″ 1080p Samsung tv (not through choice, accident, whoops), & you can’t tell the difference. The human eye cannot see the difference between the 2 until you go at least past 50″ at a close viewing distance.

720p is a perfectly fine resolution for normal tv gaming. If you’ve got a massive home cinema system then I can understand the concern but doesn’t the PS3 upscale anyway if set it at 1080p?

Sony owns the company. The Cell can only run with unique code.. A 5000 dollar top of the line game PC will never be able to run it. Put just enough game data FAT on the disk so all the fans will swoon.. Isnt marketing fun..

But Im sure this effort will look awsome and be fun to play.. If its all so good and awsome why the need to kick dirt on the 360? Your late 2009 game looks better than 2 year old Gears (it should)

  • jay

Little doubt the PS3 fan will carp on about low brow 720p. its unplayable it looks so bad.. Dicktards like this make me not want to pick up a PS3.. hate to be one of them.

  • ms

Well #1 Id stated that 60FPS will be done on the final release of Rage on the PS3 so you fail there
#2 Xbox 360 is nice buddy but you are retarded to think the GPU is 2x more powerfull.
#3 Uncharted one is still imposible because of your first statment Brain child
#4 Quit being a fanboy and feeling A$$ hurt everytime someone says anything “bad” about your favorate console you like thats cool you don’t feel ripped off by MS and there Hardware faults htats cool good for you but that is only a tribute to how intelegent most people who Got the PS3 are.

  • ms

What do you care Fanboy…. Go play your Xbox 360 if it still works

  • ms

    @ Slippy Slopy
really you own both consoles Slippy Slopy You are a Morron. I own both consoles but will not Play on Xbox Live just is not worth the money and most of my friends now own a PS3 so there is no point and that was really the only reason I would play it as much as I did. So My thoughts are that You are A lier and A stedfast Fanboy that is partialy braindamaged due to the high stress of haveing your 360 crap out.

  • ms

What the Heck are you talking about??

  • dan-o-mite

plow, you’re right you could just put it on more then one disk. but a blu ray disk can hold up to 25 gigs of memory, and a dvd can hold less then 5 i think. and naughty dog used the all those 25 gigs. so you do the math… yadda be able to PLOW your way through that

  • flyingeagle666

if it was possible on 360 why is there not a game on 360 which looks visually as good (gears is good but still doesnt match)!!

  • truthsayer

“if it was possible on 360 why is there not a game on 360 which looks visually as good”

Because MS don’t have to develope games at a loss to try and justify a huge console price to underwhelmed consumers.

Uncharted 2 will just about break even and Killzone 2 will never recoupe the developement costs.

In short Sony are paying a premium to try and sell the PS3 as a powerhouse because they need to, truth is the difference in perfomance is minimal at best but MS have a headstart and a cheaper console so they don’t need to subsidize their devs so heavily to create showcase games.

This pressure to create a graphical showcase is the reason Lair looked cool but played like crap,
Heavenly sword looked nice but was way too short and repetative and Killzone 2 looks great but has no story or style of it’s own.

Uncharted looks like it might actually play well as well as look good and i’m pleased for the PS3 fans but don’t get too used to games with these type of overbudget developements because if the PS3 starts selling well they wont need to make profitless showcase games anymore and if they don’t start selling well they won’t be able to keep it up anyway.

  • Rimmer

His statement would carry a lot more credibility if they actually had any experience working with the 360. Until then this is nothing but selfindulgent bragging. In the end, both machines are pretty much equally powerful. Just read any interview with a multiplatform coder, they all have complaints and praises in equal measure for both platforms. Sony have just been able to get some talented coders on board that have developed some good game engines.

  • CorvetteSupremacy

Well thats sorta like saying u cant buy Auto parts at a candy store. The minute this game was announced they have done nothing but talk about the Cell Processor and how they will utilize it. So i guess thats that. The truth is the fact that its exclusive and its unfair to compare it to a possible multi platform possibility consiering that not 1 multiplatform game with a lot of graphic info doesnt require an install. Uncharted2 will have no install no loading, only due in fact ND has the time to concentrate on only 1 system and not 2 3 or more platforms. This is another showpiece for the PS3 itll be intersting to see how multi plat titles compare to titles like these.

Of course this can be developed on the 360. How can anyone think otherwise? Maybe a loadscreen once in a while is needed. But that’s all.

If one console could easily overpower the other – then they would put it out there in through marketing. Not via through a single game developing director.

The game developer is probably just bitter that he is unable to provide their products to only half the market. And tries to BS his investors.

And no, I’m not a XBOX-fan. PC rules!

  • dman

its spelled intelligent and both of you are off a bit.
both systems have comparable specs, as for blue-ray storage its a nice concept but not necessary for the current edge.
the xbox 360 has a similar class cpu with comparable results in combination with its gpu, in contrast the ps3 can pump out better storage and with a better level of processing power but graphically they are very much comparable.
and in reality you will not see anything on ps3 or xbox 360 that could compare to a well built PC with a PHENOM DRAGON AND A ATI CARD.
ps3 wins in terms of cpu, faults in simple code translation, faults in ram optimization until post rendering is taking into effect.
xbox 360 wins in terms of optimization and gpu, lacks effecient cooling of 36C, faults in complex cpu load framerates are comparable to ps3 in the more demanding games if not slightly higher but not more than 15fps.
neither system has fans who arnt fanboys, who simply cannot accept that neither of them is a threat to the other that they are really like cousins in being IBM CPU-byproducts
flame this all you want im looking at this from the point of logic, uncharted 2 was nice but the sharpness of the image showed me that the ps3 isnt perfect still has a good ways to go to become the best it can be.
