PS3 Slim: What it means to the Xbox 360?

PS3 Slim: What it means to the Xbox 360?

By: Jamie Pert | August 25, 2009 | 4 Comments

Since hearing about the upcoming PS3 Slim many have believed that this could spell the end for the Xbox 360, however there are a lot of considerations that these predictions have not taken into account, one of those considerations is how Microsoft will respond.

Now that is seems that the new PS3 Slim will almost be the same price as the Xbox 360 Elite many are suspecting another price drop of the Xbox 360 Elite, this price drop is rumored to occur on the same date as the PS3 Slim launch (September 1st).

Analysts have also predicted that the Elite may be available for as little as $249 in 2010, this is due to the fact that the console will have been out for over four years and many of the internal components are getting cheaper and cheaper for Microsoft to purchase.

Another reason for the Xbox 360’s ‘demise’ is said to be the ever improving PlayStation Network, at the moment the PSN is missing some key elements such as cross game chat, voice messaging and a party system. Many believe that once these features are available people will refuse to pay for Xbox Live, sell up and move on to a PS3 with the free PSN.

Again Microsoft do have ways of countering this, they could either choose to drop or remove the Xbox Live fees, or perhaps think about selling advertising space on their dashboard (which currently has 23 million active members).

Personally I feel the launch of the PS3 Slim will put pressure on the Xbox 360, however I feel that Microsoft have many different paths in which they can reduce costs for consumers, such as cheaper hardware and cheaper Xbox Live fees. For more details check out NeoCrisis.

How do you feel the launch of the PS3 will affect that Xbox 360 and how do you think Microsoft will respond?

The PS3 will never, EVER cause the demise of the 360. I’m surprised that anyone would think a hardware revision could do this.

By the same token the 360 will never, EVER cause the demise of the PS3.

The two machines are living side by side quite happily and amongst all the bickering and technical head to heads what the consumer has actually been given is choice.

    Excellent point Slippy Sloopy!!!!!!

Neither causing the demise of the other. You have hardcore supporters on both sides.

Based on Technology and features the Xbox Elite should be at $249 since the PS3 is at $299. The PS3 has Blu-ray, Wi-fi, web browser, and free network online game play.

I am actually glad that someone has listed what the PSN is missing in comparison to the XBox Live Network. If rumors are correct, we should have cross game chatting (and probably texting) by the end of the year.

Party System and Voice Messaging. I can see the purposes behind them. I guess it would be nice to have. But I would not mind giving that up and not having to pay to play online.

I think its a big mistake to keep comparing the elite which is the top end of the 360 line to the ‘slim’ for price comparison – yes on spec these are the most closely positioned in the marketplace, but when it comes to price the 360 offers a gaming experience through its cheaper versions at far less than the cost of a PS3 slim.

I agree with the previous posters that these consoles will continue to co-exist. I cant even see a case for titles becoming exclusives because the market share is so even, but i think whoever wants to win this gen of console wars has to focus on the games not the hardware.

  • I dont know

This will only lead to price cuts and increase in quality.

who knows ps3 MAY end up having ps2 bc later on even though sony people say no way

who knows maybe eventually a 360 almost free of problems

Hurt them, good for us =D
