Galilei Galileo’s Telescope: 400 years since it’s invention

The world changed after Galilei Galileo invented the first telescope 400 years ago. It was from then that many astronomical observations could be made, we now find ourselves in a world that depends on this amazing yet simple thing. The Guardian wonders why this celebration of such a great invention has crept up so quietly.

The 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin and 150 years since On the Origin of Species was published all had the attention that they deserved. The Guardian argues that without the invention of the telescope, we would not have seen ourselves as we do today, so this 400-year anniversary should not be forgotten about.

Back on 25 August 1609, Galilei Galileo, the Italian astronomer and philosopher showed off his new invention to Venetian merchants. This did not go as he had hoped and bought with it a whole load of trouble.

Galilei Galileo’s first telescope looked just like a brown stick and was tiny when compared by telescopes of today’s standards that you can purchase from any cheap store. It was not long before Galileo started to offer versions that were more powerful.
