DOJ Approves Sun Microsystems Takeover

Following Oracle’s interest in acquiring Sun Microsystems the US Department of Justice have now approved Oracle’s proposition. However for the deal to go ahead Oracle will need the European Union antitrust regulators to also approve the deal.

It is thought that the Department of Justice had some concerns regarding the deal, especially concerns over the fate of technologies such as Java and MySQL. The major concerns were regarding MySQL as it is currently a huge competitor with Oracle’s database software.

The proposed takeover was first announced back in April and is valued somewhere between $7-$8 billion, if the deal does go ahead it should allow Oracle to become a more substantial competitor to Microsoft. For more details check out WindowsITPro.
