Xbox 360 FFXIII on 3 DVDs: Just buy a PS3

Final Fantasy XIII producer Yoshinori Kitase has confirmed today that the Xbox 360 version of the game will ship on mulitple discs, as many as three. He made his comments today, when speaking at GamesCom.

In an interview with VG247, Yoshinori Kitase made the following statement:

“This is not the final count as we’re still working on it, but we’re aiming for about three discs for the Xbox 360 version.”

He also revealed that both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions will be pretty much ‘identical’ with only subtle differences due to the different hardware between the two systems.

Well, this is quite surprising to say the least. We expected the game on two discs at the most, but three?! It reminds me of the good old Final Fantasy VII days on the PS1. More comments from Kitase over at VG247. Let us know your reaction to the news.

I guess players will have to weigh up if they prefer better graphics to not having to change discs.

I think I’m going to add this as my signiture: Why can’t all PS3 games look as good as Wipeout HD/Fury?

  • john

dont buy a ps3 it breaks all the time so i swapped it for a xbox and it works ever since and has better games then the ps3

      ROFLS are good!!

Having both systems, the question for me is not whether there are 3 disks on the xbox 360 or the most probable initial 20 minute install on the PS3. The real question is, which version will be better looking and run at a full 60fps?

  • Deadmeat

You would not want to buy FF13 on PS3; PS3 version looked far choppier than Xbox 360 version demoed at E3, even though Xbox 360 version was a two month old alpha port with no performance optimization done on it.

Granted it is not going to be as bad as Rage, which is 60 FPS on Xbox 360 and 30 FPS or less on PS3 according to John Carmack, but the usual multiplatform performance difference will be present with Final Fantasy 13.

There’s something seriously wrong with the way PS3 displays graphics for most games. I played the Batman demo on the PS3 and it looked pretty jaggy, a mate said it looked great on the 360. It’s not just multi-format games that suffer as Infamous was shocking to look at at times, great game though but that’s not my point.

It’s not even though it’s not possible to make games look amazing on the PS3 e.g. MGS4 and Wipeout but on the whole they look inferior to the 360, which for me means I will always get games for the 360 if there’s a choice and the PS3 remains a blu-ray player that has the bonus of playing games.

It’s called alisasing. It’s a problem with noob and lazy-ass developers who don’t implement anti-aliasing in PS3 games. The 360 reportedly makes it easier to implement it, so they do it. Because the PS3 is more flexible, it requires them to implement it “manually” so to speak.

        • Mornelithe

It’s actually not as simple as that. The real issue is that the PS3 itself, does not handle FSAA very well. However, that does not mean developers cannot produce the same results using different deferred rendering techniques. It’s a matter of learning how to do so, which is why it’s predominately an issue w/ multi-platform development.

        • Slippy Sloppy

Then why does Infamous look so bad? The worst offender is the lights off the moon and the street lamps, at times they look like large steps.

I can only assume it was a multi-format game Sony paid to go exclusive. It’s funny how the best looking game on the PS3 costs £11.99 to download.

        • dick cheney

It’s an issue even with the simplest 2D graphics in the most exclusive title the console can have. Next time you run “Playstation Home”, pay attention to the awful loading screen (assuming you have a 1080p display, of course).

That’s not to say all PS3 games suffer from this, though. Killzone 2 is perfectly fine IIRC.

        Really and your evidence is?

    • smarter than you

Rage will be 60 fps on both systems just to let you know. And please name 1 game that looks as good as uncharted 2 or even 1 for that just takes a little extra time and seeing the final fantasy engine was made for ps3 it will look better on ps3 just saying.

I wouldn\’t care if it was on 10 discs, it\’s still better than waiting on Blu-Ray loading times + mandatory installs, then there is the possibility that the framerate or resolution gets gimped on the PS3 version although i think Square Enix are unlikely to release it until both or on par, i think they would probably delay it first.

    @slippy slopy says:

really so the Xbox has the better graphics and you are the king of england right? Maybe you got to get back on the antipsychotics…

It would be definitely smart to just delay FF on both systems if they are not on-par with eachother in terms of graphics, than to release one which is half arse done. I can not stress this more ALL GAME DEVELOPERS should learn a thing or two from Infinity Ward. They didnt have a problem with Call of Duty Modern Warfare in releasing simultaniously for both MS and Sony consoles and there is no noticeable differences, if any, in graphic detail or even the way it runs on each platform. I will buy most Sony’s exclusive games as well as all Xbox 360 ones from day one, but those games that are multiplatform, I usually wait until I see reviews and videos making my choice a wiser one.

I’ll be getting FFXIII for my PS3, failing a PC release. Anyone who’s surprised that it’ll ship on 3+ discs for the 360 is being silly. It’s just a reality of the device you purchased. Doesn’t make it a bad thing…hey, at least you’re playin FFXIII without having to buy a different machine, right? Who cares, they’ll probably both be exactly the same, and we’ll never really know which version suffered due to this assinine policy of ‘sameness’ for all consoles. What a wonderful generation this has developed into…

  • kan

OH NO! you…you..you mean you actually have to g..get up and change the disc? no way, im definately getting a ps3 cus of that…

isnt there some pre install you have to do on the ps3 anyway? im pretty sure that time is way longer than the 30 seconds it will take to change all 3 discs.

  • http://www.scea.com Ivan_PSP

Everyone is getting this for PLAYSTATION 3. The Final Fantasy fans are all with PlayStation. Xbox 360 is going to have 3 fucking disk wow that truly must suck plus the Xbox 360 itself is garbage it has 50 percent failure rate and awful confusing menu plus not all model have hard drive. We all know the version that everyone wants is the PS3 version.

    • bullet

Why does it sux having three disks on the Xbox 360 version of FF?? What, you have a blu-ray changer on your PS3???

  • JBDragon

Not a big deal. Not like your switching Discs left and right. It’s nothing that the SONY people haven’t done themselves with games on the PS1 for example!!! Besides, you could just install the whole game onto your HDD anyway. Still don’t want a PS3.
