PS3 Slim Power Consumption: Does less do it for you?

PS3 Slim Power Consumption: Does less do it for you?

By: Alan Ng | August 20, 2009 | 11 Comments

With many news dedicated to the PS3 Slim lately and it’s new hardware design, one of the features that will appeal to most is the fact that the PS3 Slim now has 34% less power consumption. A lot of gamers are critical about power consumption and the amount of noise it makes during operation, so a lot of gamers will be picking up the Slim purely based on this stat.

Its no secret that the original Xbox 360 had quite a loud operation noise, and while the PS3 was considerably quieter, was still definately noticable during use. The new PS3 Slim is expected to be much quieter than the bigger model, so this again will probably add to your decision in picking up a Slim on September 1st.

Let us know if you plan on buying a PS3 Slim for its design specs or its quieter operation and less power consumption.

I own a 360 so noise and power consumption are annoyances, i would buy the PS3 slim if it the price point was lower – $299 does not equal £250 Sony need to stop treating the UK so badly ! Also you can pick up a blu-ray player for 60-100 £ now so its no longer a cheap option for that.

Sadly, I think UK customers are used to inflated prices by now Andy..

For instance, take the PSP Go’s UK price (£225) and Activision’s MW2 price (£55 RRP) for key examples..

agree and they say its to do with the exchange rate but when it was $2 for £1 we still had to play £425 and US only $600 so we pay an extra £125 than the US would. and the psp go at £224.99 is a joke with US convertion now it comes near £150 and by the way i only own a ps3 so i guess a fanboy dare i say it!!!!

I have a launch 60 gig system which has the 90nm cell and it really puts out the heat. It really doesn’t make much noise but when I turn it on the lights dim in the house for just a second so it is really sucking down the juice. I think it has a 380 watt power supply and this new slim has 250 watt. I just wonder if the RSX graphics chip is 65nm or down to 45nm as well. I may very well get one of these just for the less power draw because I like the idea of leaving my system on and not worry about it overheating. I may even do some folding if I get one of these.

I get 100% of my electricity from solar energy, so power consumption is a pretty important aspect for me. I’m hoping actual power is below 150W.

Ditto with Doug, in as much as concern for less=more. It was a deciding factor in my advance order, as I await repair service on a YLOD 60 gigger. We be re-testing myself as soon as unit arrives to have a benchmark of my power consumption, as the mileage is indeed expected to vary..
    Sony has my attention!

I don’t know how to break this to you, but the PS3 has always used more power than the 360. The Slim still uses more power than the 360. The higher noise of the 360 is because of 1) The DVD drive spins faster 2)The smaller fans (because of its slimmer case) spin faster. The Slim will see little noise reduction because it has a smaller case. Gizmodo actually measured the noise from the Slim during movie playback as being louder than the old PS3. So if you think the Slim will save you on power over a 360, you’re in for a disappointment. If you think it will be quieter, you will disappointed. Oh, and they still didn’t add an IR port, so you have to waste money on a Bluetooth remote or a $60 IR adapter. Nice way to save 10c, Sony.

I will be picking up the PS3 slim model as my second PS3 and moving my currect PS3 60gig to the basement. I wanted to have one in the basement at some point with all the PS3 can do it’s a no brainer. But I am really execited that the slim model is much quiter because thats one thing that bothereb me sometimes. I watch movies late at night and dont put the volume to high because of my kids and when the fan kicks in it drowns out some of the volume. I dont care that is smaller really.

So the deal breaker was the PS3 getting much quiter then the 60gig i have. Thank you SONY!!! never owned more then one of the same system…lol

w00t! It appears the slim comes in at a mere 94 watts while gaming—half that of the 360.

Way to go Sony! My solar panels will be most pleased.

My new PS3 slim is extremely quiet and more quiet than even my fairly recent PS3 “fat” 40GB. I think I’ll go back to folding full time with the savings in power consumption and noise.

obviously you are a 360 fanboy,so please shut up and stop confusing people with your incorrect comment.
the ps3 slim uses less energy than 360,it is MUCH quiter than the 360.the build quality and reliability is just completely superior to the 360.so hardware wise the ps3 slim is an absolute winner in competing with the 360.
