PS3 backwards compatibility not coming back

PS3 backwards compatibility not coming back

By: Alan Ng | August 20, 2009 | 33 Comments

Sony’s John Koller has confirmed that backwards compatibility will NOT be coming back to the PS3. It follows months of speculation, ‘will it or wont its’ and general frustration among PS3 owners across the globe.

Koller made the comments about B/C, as well as general information about the PS3 Slim, in an exclusive interview with Ars Technica.

When quizzed about the possibility of backwards compatibility making a return in the future, Koller was quick to kill off any return at all.

He states: “It’s not coming back, so let me put that on the table, but it’s all people ever talk about! We’ve got such a substantial lineup of titles on the PS3; most people are buying the PS3 for PS3 games. They’ve buying it for PS3 games and Blu-ray movies.”

Well I guess that clears up the topic for good. And we’re glad actually. On with the future we say. Let us know your reaction to the news.

Definitely not the news I was hoping to hear..

I bought mine for blu-ray, the fact it played games was a bonus.

Most people buy a PS3 for PS3 games,,,,, cause,,,,, that all you can buy for it..??? Stupid statement SONY!

Then why are they selling the crap out of PS1 games , I mean why bother if that’s not what people want Sony?

I’m sure people don’t want to play there huge libraries of PS2 just PS1??

Im sure people want to have two systems hooked up as well?

I can buy G-Force for $39 new (PS2 Version)and $59 for the PS3 version,, Yep Your right Sony I want to buy the 60$ version for the same game..

One more thing, The backwards Compatible 60gig are selling for $1000.00 now,,,because…no one wants backwards..

Sony is so backwards and it hasn’t done them any good!!!

  • Bryan

Tell John K. I said that’s lame. You shouldn’t include the feature…then pull it…then NOT bring it back…What about rumble! They brought that back! LOL

  • Go!

    G-force sucked anyways

  • SJackson

You can bet your bum I will be complaining about this until they inevitably have to come out with some kind of firmware that lets you play PS2 on PS3 after the PS2 system gets discontinued. And even though I’m sure G-Force sucks I have to say there are still some games being released to PS2 that I’d rather pay the cheaper price for. PS3 is so not worth it unless you give two craps about Blu-Ray. I want to upgrade my 8 year old PS2 and be able to play the slim number of PS3 games I want, damn it!

  • Ron

Man, I’m so glad I bought my 60G PS3 when it came out. Yeah, I don’t want backwards compatibility on my PS3… those 118 PS2 games I own? I’d love to just use them as paperweights if my PS3 ever goes the way of my first four 360s.

Thanks for making a better quality product than Microsoft, Sony, but why so much hate for your roots? The PS2 made you the leader of the previous gen consoles. You should be embracing that, not pretending it no longer exists. Getting rid of backwards compatibility won’t make your PS3 games sell any better! I already only buy the 360 and PS3 versions of new releases, and now that you’re finally getting it together in terms of trophies, I’ll probably start buying more multi-platform releases on my PS3. THAT’S what your mistake was, Sony–the trophies. People want bragging rights, and until recently, only Microsoft was giving that to theme. So bring back backwards compatibility, and watch your system sales climb. Then keep improving the trophy system, and your game sales will follow suit.

Sony are talking out of their asses, PS3 makes profit now and still would make profit if it included the EE/GS chip (the one thing responsible for PS2 compatibility), or ANY form of BC. Theres no logical explaination for the lack of it, stating that they’ll be even more entertainment availiable for the PS3. Thats more of a reason to include the BC! So let me get this straight, they DONT want the Greatest console ever made to play games of the most popular console ever made? But then of course, owners of the 40GB, 80GB and 160GB will be left out in the rain, which will cause a huge backlash, because of Sony’s reluctance to directly admit they screwed up, the new PS3 will not reach the potential it deserves, and damage Sony’s reputation even more. Sony’s main target audience is clearly the 100 million odd PS2 owners, so retailers need to take a stand and refuse to buy SKU’s until BC is reintroduced.

  • Mitch

I hope sony wakes up to its self but remeber the PS2 is still out so maybe onece that goes away they will bring out ps2 games for the PSN to download like the 360

  • Average Joe

Yeah, I’m not gonna buy a fucking ps3 unless they make it backwards compatible. I’ve already played and beaten the only ps3 game that matters: mgs4. The quality of gaming has just been declining; all my favorite games are old. The gaming industry thinks that graphics is more important than plot and gameplay and now we only have aliens and WWII(sometime combined). Pretty colors are not the most important aspect in gaming because you can always get high and watch the sunset.

This is the same person that said Sony was not developing a ps3 slim and there was to going to be a price drop…

  • Giovanni123

I highly disagree with the comment that it’s “only a small demographic of gamers” ie) an older crowd, who wants backwards compatibility. I think EVERYONE, Gamers and Sony can benifit from this simple firmware update. And I think it’s even MORE important to perhaps yonger/ new consumers who missed out on some great ps2 classics. What’s good for consumers is what’s good for Sony. No BC is BS!

  • Berserk007

I don’t believe this shit for a second, Sony is not cannot be this dumb.

They should be thinking ” Hey we need to get our asses in gear if we want to save this system and unlock it’s full potential. We need to fire all the guns and get those people who still cradle they’re ps2, and give them a ps3 instead. To do this we need to have 100% reverse capability for our old systems, a strong and competitive pay to play program for PSN (basically a clone of live) and we need to pimp out the idea this is a multimedia unit not just a game system…we have a freaking bluray player with easy accessibility to updats and a ton of other features.”

That’s what I wish they would say, This is what they are probably thinking: Why give them free access to old content that they already own, that makes us no money. why not keep the ps2 out there for that exact purpose, or hell we can even give them the convenience of purchasing the game over PSN instead so they don’t get up off their fat asses to swap a disc….mwahaha

Like I said though I Don’t believe them, it will happen it’s just a matter of when it will make them the most money.

  • BCplease

My 80G backwards compatible PS3 just died on me. I got the “yellow light of death”….and I’m pretty upset that I won’t be able to get another PS3 that is backwards compatible.

Koller says: “It’s not coming back….but it’s all people ever talk about!!!” There’s a REASON everyone wants to talk about it…because we WANT IT! What happened to customer service? That includes giving your customers what they want. I hope people don’t stop talking about it…I wonder how long we will have to talk about it before they actually bring it back.

    Sony….I AM NOT IMPRESSED!

  • Viego

They just want us to rebuy all the old games as downloads. I bet you if the mod community were to get a software emulator out there sony would crap themselves it would be back in an instant.

  • Viego

  • Jesse Taylor

maby sony should take a minute n a half to read the coments and revews of their actions from their customers lol… hey sony… im a ps3 fan and dayly user, ever wonder why more gamers choose the x-fag 306 over ps3 you f-in failures???

  • AndersonV

Funny you should say that… I have had my 360 since the day after it came out and it still runs perfect. But the minute I buy my ps3, first it breaks, then I buy a new one, this time a 120 gig just to find out it won’t play my ps2 games…. F@#$ you Sony, it is no wonder that Microsoft is making billions more than you.

  • AndersonV

Tell that to Killzone2… I could play that all day, watch pretty colors and love the gameplay.

  • Lyonidus

Sony, I kinda hate you for this. I bought the damn system just to play my PS2 games. I want to play the 90 percent of the games that come out for 360 and the PS3 on the 360. I wanted a blue-ray player AND a BC console so I could play FFXII, Katamari, Metal Gear Solid, etc… You guys really screwed the pooch this time. Long live the 360! And I wouldn’t have meant that if you hadn’t done this. A@#holes…

  • Lyonidus

Oh, and one more thing Sony, notice that there isn’t a SINGLE comment on any site about this that isn’t pretty much down right pissed off in nature? Yeah, think about that for a moment, or is it all about profit now days? No more concern for what people want? Must be, you jackasses.

  • http://huh? Dave

Sony needs to get a clue. They are not selling their ps3 as they should because the lack of backwards compatability.
If the ps2 didn’t make any money, they would have dropped it long ago, yet people are still purchasing it and the games.
They need to combine the two formats and drop the older version so that those of us who have a ps2 library of games are more willing to make the jump to the newer version.

  • AndrewC

    It’s a dealbreaker for me.

I have about 50 ps2 games. Already have a 360 and an NES. What, am I going to have 4 systems connected? Should I just get rid of Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 3, Metal Gear Solid 3, all the other games I like more than I’ll like most of the ps3 games?

    Nope.

Sorry, Sony, you ****ed yourself out of a sale on this one. I’ll be sticking to the 360. I can still play Halo 1 and Ninja Gaiden Black on that, and most new games are multiplat anyway.

(And MGS4 sucked big-time… sorry, folks, the truth hurts.)

  • brian

So they block backwards compatibility on PS3s. Then why would people buy PS2 games for their PS3? All John Koller is saying is that people either already have their PS2 games or aren’t buying them for their PS3 because they CAN’T USE THEM.

    Retarded.

  • Gio

I believe PS3 Backwards Compatibilty will return because…

    1. Sony patented emulation for the PS3 cell processors.
    2. Leaked SEGA document says Sony plans on selling ps2 and Sega games on Psn, which requires emulation.
    3. Can already create PS1 and PS2 Save Files on PS3.
    4. There is a large demand by most consumers for BC.
    5. PS2 console nearing end of long lifecycle.

    No BC is BS!
Sony’s slogan for the Ps3 “It only doesnt play everything”
(especially your PS2 games that we already sold you)

  • TheOneWhoKnows

I believe that Sony should pull their heads out of their a**es and learn that the world would rather have BC consoles rather than buying games only for that system. I bet you if you walk around ANYWHERE and ask anyone if they would have a BC console to play the classic games rather than a system only playing games for that system, 9/10 people would say BC!

Sony listen to the buyers, it will make you a sh!t load more money, I mean ask Microsoft, its another reason why they are bathing in billions more dollars than you, while you are still bathing in week-old water!

  • Jason

John Koller is COMPLETELY INCORRECT. Sure, people do buy PS3 for PS3 games, but what about those who didn’t buy a PS2 and were waiting for PS3 so that they can buy both now? I personally held off from buying a PS2 knowing that PS3 was on the horizon but I still had a lot of PS2 games I wanted to buy that aren’t available on PS3. If Sony thinks I’m buying both, they’re out of their mind. Now I may not even buy either.

  • Angie

Sony better get it together. I LOVE my still functioning PS2, and I love the games I have for it. If the PS3 will never be backwards compatible, than I will never own a PS3. I believe that I will now be getting an Xbox 360. If I’m gonna be stuck having two consoles anyway, because Sony wants to be idiotic, I might as well go with something completely new since Sony refuses to embrace it’s beloved old. I know losing one sale doesn’t mean much, but the money they could have had will go to their competitor.

  • LucioL

If PS3 is not backward compatible why stay with Sony????

  • Robstah6

let me give a little lesson on economics Sony… Your supply and demand is F@#$ed, You have a certain amount of systems you intend to sell and not enough demand (aka people who want to and can buy them). If u want to fix this the ideal way is to lower the prices and/or try to raise demand… YOU WONT RAISE DEMAND BY PREVENTING B/C!!! your causing your consumers to hate your product and this does not increase the demand for it. It might be a good idea to go to your production office, upload the b/c firmware onto your website and offer it to the public(oh it hurts your hand to press the button)… but what am I kidding I only have a Masters in business and economics, how would I know… -_-

  • somebody

I guess Sony doesn't give a crap about having the most extensive game library on the planet in its latest, expensive toy.

  • somebody

Ask John Koller how many consoles without backwards compatibility had led the market since the PSOne. Yup. Zero.

  • Italianguy

dude, youre right. the thing is, SONY is just to lazy, selfish, and careless to bring back people want. They're just making consumers NOT want to buy the product.
