Sony PS3 Firmware update 3.0: Your Impressions?

Yesterday, we told you about Sony’s plans to introduce Firmware 3.0 onto current PS3 systems as well as the new PS3 Slim console. With hearing the news that the firmware is coming at the start of September, and after having the chance to watch the new features in action, we ask you for your impressions on the update.

While some of the features are great, most notably the new ‘What’s New’ menus and updated friends list, we cant help but feel slightly disappointed with the update. In most PS3 owner’s eyes, firmware update 3.0 was meant to be the big one, and we all thought that Sony would finally announce in-game voice chat across games.

Sadly though, it was never to be. Yes we like animated themes and an updated trophy system, but its still not a huge update. Maybe it’s just me being too greedy perhaps.

Let us know your thoughts on the firmware 3.0 update and what missing features you would have liked to see.

backwards compatibility for playstation 2 games…….seriously when is this going to happen

    • Chris Davis says:

that is so stupid…..i want to be able play ps3 games and ps2 games without having to have two seperate systems. there are many ps3 games i love but i will never ever play madden again on ps3, it isnt even the same game and everyone knows the true og version of madden is with ps2, forget about graphics when it comes to that game, its all about gameplay and controlls. also san andreas, classics like that…its just so upsetting that they took one of the best features out

Listen, if Sony did the following, they would stop being in third place this generation:

        1. Kill the PS2. Enough of riding in the coat-tails of the Wii. Kill that system and that user base will move up to finally support the PS3. But as long as Sony keeps the PS2 alive, they will STAY THERE!

        2. Entice PS2 supporters by making the PS3 be backward compatible with the PS2. That way they can continue to enjoy those last gen games on the PS3. Making the “emigration” process from the PS2 to the PS3 a lot sweeter for them.

        3. Cross Voice-chat!. Make it happen! It’s only the 21st freakin’ century Sony!

I agree with this 110%. Is like Sony is scared to do this for some reason…… oh wait, I know, they would loose money. The have completely ignored on the key features that we have asked them to change on the PS3. Going on 3 years and we still missing cross chatting. Sony also ignores that the consoles that got them ahead of any other consoles (besides probably Nintendo) were called Playstation, in which defines a console to play games on. With the new logo of PS3, its ovious that they are just categorizing and concentrating on just more multimedia options than what the console should be all about. Need I say that the only reason the 360 sells is because of their online features?? Sony would have had microsoft on its knees right now if they incorporated what gamers want. Fail to capitalize on this, and I’m afraid that my ps3 will only be collecting dust. After I finish playing God of War 3 ofcourse.

  2. Go! says:

Play PS3 games!! u dont need BC on the PS3 with so many PS3 games to play.

    The whole update is awesome

  3. richard says:

    Another boring update!

  4. ps3 says:

i agree with go! i think the whole update is great!….cross game voice chats r not my most anticipated things … so well done sony

    • Ed says:

Yeah because with voice chat, ppl would find out that:

      1. You have the voice of a whiny 12 year old and nobody would want to hang out with you.

      2. English is not your native language and ppl would make fun of your accent

      3. You like to pretend your a girl but your voice would give away the fact that you’re a 40 year old tranny.

      • azmat says:

did they seriously took out the music while you are in the internet browser, man!!! they suck i liked that, they took the awsome out of browsing the internet

  5. Vladimir says:

I didnt see any NEW things… The update is BORING

  6. TheSnowman says:

I was really wanting cross game chatting cause i cant talk to any one on my friends list in game. So that is a real dissapointment. The Xbox360 had it since day one. Everything else sounds awesome.

  7. Stig says:

So much potential of the hw, to close gap to windows media server. would have like to have seen multi-tasking improvement such as web browser from within PlayTv, simultaneous downloads whilst in games/playtv. Also video conf improvements, (setup simplification, connectivity to Skype etc.).
Like the themes, and video rental and purchase is cool though.

  8. roy says:

well, boring dissapointing and for me, useless y want same as Chris Davis BC ps2 or something more exiting, this suck i hope more news with the release

  9. crazy says:

I agree. the update is alright but not great. they need add in-game voice chat across games and to appeal to people that had PS2s and bought 360s, they need to have BC. and if they want to promote home more they need to make more easier to access it bcuz it takes 2 long for my patience. make it more integrated with the games and the system it self. like I thought we were going to be able to look at our trophies in 3d and an invite friends and chat and go chat with other people but Home is like its own game and not that great.

  10. Jimmy says:

I agree, I never in my wildest dreams would think that such a beautiful piece of technology with so much potential would actually regress and diminish one of their best features. Sony is going “backwards” literally, in getting rid of backwards compatibility.
