Sony PS3 Firmware update 3.0: Your Impressions?

Sony PS3 Firmware update 3.0: Your Impressions?

By: Alan Ng | August 19, 2009 | 27 Comments

Yesterday, we told you about Sony’s plans to introduce Firmware 3.0 onto current PS3 systems as well as the new PS3 Slim console. With hearing the news that the firmware is coming at the start of September, and after having the chance to watch the new features in action, we ask you for your impressions on the update.

While some of the features are great, most notably the new ‘What’s New’ menus and updated friends list, we cant help but feel slightly disappointed with the update. In most PS3 owner’s eyes, firmware update 3.0 was meant to be the big one, and we all thought that Sony would finally announce in-game voice chat across games.

Sadly though, it was never to be. Yes we like animated themes and an updated trophy system, but its still not a huge update. Maybe it’s just me being too greedy perhaps.

Let us know your thoughts on the firmware 3.0 update and what missing features you would have liked to see.

i agree with go! i think the whole update is great!….cross game voice chats r not my most anticipated things … so well done sony

I didnt see any NEW things… The update is BORING

  • TheSnowman

I was really wanting cross game chatting cause i cant talk to any one on my friends list in game. So that is a real dissapointment. The Xbox360 had it since day one. Everything else sounds awesome.

that is so stupid…..i want to be able play ps3 games and ps2 games without having to have two seperate systems. there are many ps3 games i love but i will never ever play madden again on ps3, it isnt even the same game and everyone knows the true og version of madden is with ps2, forget about graphics when it comes to that game, its all about gameplay and controlls. also san andreas, classics like that…its just so upsetting that they took one of the best features out

So much potential of the hw, to close gap to windows media server. would have like to have seen multi-tasking improvement such as web browser from within PlayTv, simultaneous downloads whilst in games/playtv. Also video conf improvements, (setup simplification, connectivity to Skype etc.).
Like the themes, and video rental and purchase is cool though.

well, boring dissapointing and for me, useless y want same as Chris Davis BC ps2 or something more exiting, this suck i hope more news with the release

I agree. the update is alright but not great. they need add in-game voice chat across games and to appeal to people that had PS2s and bought 360s, they need to have BC. and if they want to promote home more they need to make more easier to access it bcuz it takes 2 long for my patience. make it more integrated with the games and the system it self. like I thought we were going to be able to look at our trophies in 3d and an invite friends and chat and go chat with other people but Home is like its own game and not that great.

I agree, I never in my wildest dreams would think that such a beautiful piece of technology with so much potential would actually regress and diminish one of their best features. Sony is going “backwards” literally, in getting rid of backwards compatibility.

  • Eddie

I love my PS3. Some of you might not need or want it but I want PS2 BC. I still play some PS2 games like Tekken Tag and GT4. It would be nice to just have 1 console. By the time I could afford a PS3, they took away BC already. Why doesn’t Sony give it to those of us who’ve been loyal to them?

  • MAUL

This update is a big disappointment cause it really does suck. People are expecting certain things & aren’t getting it. Animated themes??? Who cares? Bring on the game features & worry about all this xtra stuff later.

  • smeg

I don’t care about BC or cross-game chat! However many, many people want ceross-game voice chat and until the PS3 gets it it will always be behind the XBOX.

SONY have made it clear that BC will NOT be returning. This doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to play PS2 games on your PS3 though. My belief is SONY plans to make PS2 games available as downloads off the PSN. SONY would make a fortune as you would have to buy these games again in order to play them on your PS3.

I don’t know why SONY didn’t have this up and running ages ago?

Sony left out the backwards compatibility “feature” again. It’s a dealbreaker for me, I’m not going to buy the anorexic ps3 slim because of this reason alone. How much can it really cost sony? to allow people to play Sony’s own products on a “new-er” Sony machine! Bs, this is a BIG issue to every possible Sony consumer.

all that can wait wat we need is music for sale on psn like itunes and i want to make my own themes on my ps3 and show my friends. and i want sony to make a website like myspace or facebook so we can see photos of awer friends familly and make fun of them and i also want to show them my home photos and videos i bought my ps3 for new games not old owns

  • fransico

    ps i love this update

Yeah because with voice chat, ppl would find out that:

    1. You have the voice of a whiny 12 year old and nobody would want to hang out with you.

    2. English is not your native language and ppl would make fun of your accent

    3. You like to pretend your a girl but your voice would give away the fact that you’re a 40 year old tranny.

  • Ed

Listen, if Sony did the following, they would stop being in third place this generation:

    1. Kill the PS2. Enough of riding in the coat-tails of the Wii. Kill that system and that user base will move up to finally support the PS3. But as long as Sony keeps the PS2 alive, they will STAY THERE!

    2. Entice PS2 supporters by making the PS3 be backward compatible with the PS2. That way they can continue to enjoy those last gen games on the PS3. Making the “emigration” process from the PS2 to the PS3 a lot sweeter for them.

    3. Cross Voice-chat!. Make it happen! It’s only the 21st freakin’ century Sony!

I was disapointed with this update. Who really cares about animated themes? They should also improve the internet browser and music features. Why dont they listen to the PS3 owners?

  • bullet

I agree with this 110%. Is like Sony is scared to do this for some reason…… oh wait, I know, they would loose money. The have completely ignored on the key features that we have asked them to change on the PS3. Going on 3 years and we still missing cross chatting. Sony also ignores that the consoles that got them ahead of any other consoles (besides probably Nintendo) were called Playstation, in which defines a console to play games on. With the new logo of PS3, its ovious that they are just categorizing and concentrating on just more multimedia options than what the console should be all about. Need I say that the only reason the 360 sells is because of their online features?? Sony would have had microsoft on its knees right now if they incorporated what gamers want. Fail to capitalize on this, and I’m afraid that my ps3 will only be collecting dust. After I finish playing God of War 3 ofcourse.

I have to agree too most of friends are still clinging to their PS2\’s and mostly because as soon as they found they couldn\’t get a PS3 that was backwards compatible anymore they instantly stuck their noses up in the air (saying \”well I\’ll just wait until they bring it back\”).

I myself went out and got an early PS3 that was backwards compatible and still have many PS2 games that I play (some of which I didn\’t round to playing with until after I got my PS3), so I would really like to see what facts Sony have that have lead them to believe that backwards compatibility is not a feature people want!!

  • azmat

did they seriously took out the music while you are in the internet browser, man!!! they suck i liked that, they took the awsome out of browsing the internet

  • Spence

on mine it no longer plays blu-rays! it starts up but goes straight to a black screen. does anyone else have this problem or is it just mine?

  • GhostWriter

    Video streaming still stutters.

    Not impressed.
