PS3 Slim Release Date and First UK Retailer

PS3 Slim Release Date and First UK Retailer

By: Peter Chubb | August 18, 2009 | 6 Comments

We have known for a while that the Sony PS3 Slim is on its ways, the exact details will be announced shortly at Sony’s Conference. Kmart was the first online retailer to blink and start to offer pre-orders of the Sony PS3 Slim. Those of you in the UK have yet to see an online retailer offer the new slimmer PlayStation 3 for pre-order.

We discussed in an early post that the new PS3 Slim will come with a 120GB hard drive and a DUAL SHOCK 3 controller. The new games console will be launched on August 24 and have a price tag of $299. The UK price is yet to be announced.

The lower pricing for this newer PlayStation 3 is not a huge price reduction over the standard full size model, but is hoped to be just enough to help boost sales and win the battle with Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Nintendo’s Wii console.

According to Business Insider, we are still waiting on official confirmation from Sony, which they should do at its press event in New York very soon. The price cut to $299 is 25 percent of the cost of the standard PlayStation, but still higher than the Wii, priced at $249 and a long way from the $199 price for the Xbox 360.

The added advantage with the new PS3 Slim is that it comes with a hard drive and that all-important Blu-ray player. Sales of the PS3 have dropped by 46 percent year-over-year; this huge price reduction should help get things back on track.

So who do you think will be the first UK retailer to list the PS3 Slim for pre-order, maybe you know already?

Please include the in the article that the $199 Xbox is the Arcade Version of the console. You can’t really go on-line or anything like that (multiplayer, netflix, etc).

If Xbox users want to do this, they need the Elite (Since the Pro is been discontinued) which will cost the same as the PS3 $299. Please report all of the facts.

    Hello,

Comparing a 120GB Wifi Bluray enabled PS3 to a Xbox Arcade is a little silly no?

With the rumoured Elite price drop to Pro levels we will have two HD machines at $299 US with equal HD space…but the PS3 will have BD, WiFi and Free online while the Xbox has a headset.

IBM announced a new Cell processor last year:

The most important enhancement to the chip was to add an on chip DDR2 interface. This makes me suspect that the PS3 slim and lite will include the option to increase RAM beyond the PS3′s rather meagre 0.5 Gb. This enhancement would be very important for PS3 Linux users. Currently the PS3 struggles to support a GUI. The XBox 360 has 1 Gb of onchip RAM and so I think that it would be much easier to port XBOX 360 games to a PS3 with more RAM.

Amazon.co.uk was the first retailer to list the PS3 slim, closely followed by the GAME group the same day.
