GM’s Chevy Volt: 230 MPG Electric Car
By: Jamie Pert | August 11, 2009 | Leave a CommentFollowing on from the news earlier today regarding the General Motors Chevrolet Volt more details are now beginning to emerge. The Chevrolet Volt should be out in November 2010 and has an estimated fuel economy of 230 mpg (obviously depending on circumstances), or 25 kilowatt hours per 100 miles.
Earlier today GM’s President and CEO Fritz Henderson released this statement via an hour long webcast “When the Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric vehicle rolls off the assembly line late next year, it will be the first mass-production automobile to achieve triple-digit fuel economy, with an expected 230 mpg in the city, or 25 kilowatt hours per 100 miles,”
Obviously if this three figure fuel economy is met it will be huge for the industry, the global climate and for GM, however there is some doubt surrounding the proposed MPG of the Volt, this is due to the fact the figure was based on a drafting procedure, this procedure took into account different vehicles and different electrical charges.
Currently The Environmental Protection Agency have not confirmed or declined the figure, however an EPA spokeswoman did release this statement “EPA has not tested a Chevy Volt and therefore cannot confirm the fuel economy values claimed by GM,”.
