Final Fantasy XIII Sales: PS3 vs. Xbox 360

Final Fantasy XIII Sales: PS3 vs. Xbox 360

By: Jamie Pert | August 11, 2009 | 45 Comments

With the release of Final Fanatasy XIII on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 next year many experts are beginning to wonder which console the game will be more popular on. An article on Destructoid is currently looking into all of the factors associated with the game being successful on each console.

Many experts believe that because of the partnership Square-Enix have had with Sony since the release of Final Fantasy VII the game will be much more suited to the PlayStation 3 market, also previous fans of the Final Fantasy series probably brought the PlayStation 3 as apposed to the Xbox 360.

Currently the Xbox 360 is doing better than the PS3 in the US, there has been a constant pattern with cross platform games getting more sales on the Xbox 360 then they did for the Sony Playstation 3.
EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich had this to say on the matter“Ninety percent of multi-platform games will significantly outperform on the Xbox 360 compared to the PS3,” Divinich tells me. “However, there does exist a handful of titles where either the PS3 version outperforms its Xbox 360 counterpart or has a higher attachment rate to their respected hardware install base.”

I feel that the major competition occurs when people own both consoles, there are so many pros and cons for both choices, with the exclusive content the Xbox 360 usually receives for similar titles and also the falling price of the PS3 its too close to call.

Do you own both consoles? What console will you buy the game on?

I own both consoles, and I guess either choice will work just fine. In my case I’ll buy it for the PS3 since I’ve always played these games in a Playstation console and I enjoy more the PS3 controller. Also, as this game will be exclusive in Japan for the PS3 and it’s developed first for the PS3 and then ported to the 360, I feel the game may have a better quality in the Playstation console. This has been the case also for some games that are developed in the 360 and then ported to the PS3, usually the game performs better for the console it was developed. Also, it has been mentioned the game may be quite large, which the Blu-ray format has an edge versus a DVD. In the end if you only have a 360, I assume you’ll do well too, but if you have both consoles then I recommend going with the PS3, not because I’m a PS3 fanboy, since I would do the same if the game was created for the 360 and porteded to the PS3, which has been the majority of times.

One of the reasons I bought a ps3 was for the final fantasy series, so no doubt in my mind which version I will pick up, I generally buy multiformat games for the ps3, I keep my 360 for halo and arcade games.the 360 brought me back to gaming so I support both consoles in different areas.

  • Ray

My guess is there’s a chance it will sell more on the xbox in the US it the PS3 version will sell more over all. It’s exclusive in Japan and games sell better for the PS3 in Europe.

  • young pimpin

ill play it on PS3, i have 360 but i barely use it, so yea PS3

  • Andrew

Worldwide install base will definitely be on the Playstation 3 because of the Japanese exclusivity. In the US it depends, although the xbox 360 has sold more in the US, one of the reasons to buy a Playstation 3 was because of the Final Fantasy franchise, and with less discs, it is more appealing to buy it on the PS3.

  • Ben

Definately PS3. The game is going to be massive, and the developers are saying that on dvd it is going to have to be multi-disk, as many as four if I remember right and I don’t want to deal with that. Also it was developed and optimized for PS3.

  • bullet

PS3 version of course. I have both systems, but my choice is Sony’s console. Just like MGS series. Now if Halo or Gears of War came out on the PS3 in the future, I would buy them only for the 360. LOL

  • Dane Arries

I will be buying this on the xbox 360, even though i own both consoles, i feel sony is way too money obsessedwhereas xbox is much more lax and thinks more about the customers.

  • Joe

    PS3, i dont use my 360

  • Whatever

I’ll get a PS3 by Xmas. So I’ll buy it on the system that gets the better reviews and/or has less glitches. The whole multiple DVD thing is an old PS3 fanboy argument. B-Ray is overrated. I don’t recall FFVII being on 1 disc, and nobody really cared about changing a CD every few days or at most few hours. What happens you want to play another game? You get off your lazy behind.

  • Cabbage117

I also have both but im gunna get it on ps3 cuz i usually get single player games on ps3. idk its just how i shop.

But i think no doubt itll sell better on ps3 cuz its exclusive to ps3 in Japan. Its coming out in the fall in Japan and i could just import it if i really wantd to…

In US it might outsell ps3 in US but maybe only by like 100,000 units. I always thought there should be a bigger difference in sales between the two consoles considering 360 has 10 million more units sold. Eh, i dont really care though.

  • D.O.

I’ll buy it on my PS3, like the first poster said I’m more used to playing a Final Fantasy on a playstation and I’m really comfortable with the Dualshock and for some rreason I just can’t get used to the 360′s controller.

And as a commenters prediction to where it will sell well most it will definitely sell more on the PS3. Japan is the PS3′s largest market and Japan also has the largest market for Final Fantasy with the exclusivity on PS3 in Japan it will move some systems there.

As for US it’s more of a coin flip on one hand you have more people on the other hand I know a lot of PS3 owners in the US who bought a PS3 for Final Fantasy 13 since at the time it was considered exclusive. So if most of the PS3 owners in the states bought a PS3 for Final Fantasy 13 then I feel it will do extremely well if not outperform the 360 version.

    But that’s just me

  • Mark

I am a life long final fantasy fan, ever since they were on SNES. The reason I bought my PS3 is to play final fantasy on it. But, because I’ve been hearing that the game is so large, I am worried that the game, for the PS3, might have some problems with it during the first release. Regardless I’ll be one of the first ones to buy the game.

  • Mark

PS3 is where it’s at these days. The Xbox has had it’s couple of years in the limelight, there is nothing new or exciting on it anymore, and the failure rates have put consumers off.

The slight sales advantage that games have in the US (and only the US), is down to the 12 month headstart the prematurely launched Xbox had. The gap is closing real fast with EA, Ubisoft and Capcom all saying in their annual reports, the PS3 makes them more money.

  • name

japan definitely ps3 because its ps3 exclusive in japan.
    europe definitely ps3.
    US and other countries 360.
which will sell better, well thats hard to say the US is getting it allot later than jappan and i know allot of people in the US who are importing it from japan so they will have to get the ps3 copy.
so i would go with the ps3 over all but in the US the 360 will sell more than the ps3.

  • cadillac

i will get this for the ps3, i dont really play my 360 that much

  • Just can’t stop

hmm…looks like a lot of people are going for ps3. I have ps3 right now but I’m getting 360 soon. I haven’t play much FF games only FFTA and A2. PS3 is great and all but I stopped playing it, so I wanna get 360 too (wii hurts…)

In short, I’m gonna be getting it on both systems cause their both good regardless of all the 360 haters and vice versa

  • AlphaOmega

I Own both systems and frankly, I will be purchasing it for the PS3 for a few reasons. First of all, Final fantasy on anything other than sony or nintendo doesn’t seem right. Secondly, the ps3 is my main system that i enjoy quite a bit more (the only thing i like better about the 360 is the controller). Thirdly, the PS3 version will most likley only be one disc whereas the 360 version will probably be at least 3. Lastly, when im 30 hours in to the game, my PS3 is a lot less likley to burn out than my 360 is of getting RROD. The only thing that could sway me would be some sort of exclusive dlc for the 360 that extends the gameplay by 10 hours or more.

  • The Wind Baby

First off, I am in no way a fanboy. I just don’t like it when a console is bashed. @Dane Arries: Do you honestly believe that sony are the ones that want to take your money and microsoft is more lax and cares about their customers? If this is about the PS3s $399.99 price tag then it doesn’t really make sense. If anything M$ wants to take your money. For one they make you pay $50 a year to play online. I believe that you shouldn’t have to pay to play online. But the extra perks that come along with paying $50 a year is kinda worth it. Sony also lets you connect via wifi right out of the box as opposed to paying an extra $100 to do that for the 360. Sony also gives you a full rechargable controller right out of the box. Lastly, M$ makes you pay $150 for a 120 GB HDD if you want to add more memory but with the PS3 you can pay for a 2.5″ SATA HDD and get about 320 GB additional memory. This also doesn’t figure in the amount of money you have to pay to ship your 360 back and forth to M$ whenever it RROD. So honestly your statement should be the other way around.
@ Mark: I don’t think you will have to worry about any problems with FFXIII on the PS3. MGS4 took up an entire 50GB dual-layered bluray disc even after extensive micro-compressing and it had absolutely no problems playing. Therefore there hopefully, shouldn’t and better not be any problems with FFXIII.
But back to topic, I think that FFXIII will sell better on the PS3 overall. In Japan its an exclusive. PS3 games usually sell better in Europe. But when it comes to the US, its anyones game. But the fact that its exclusive in Japan already gives the PS3 an advantage. I’ll be getting both versions and then keeping the version thats better. This will more than likely be the PS3 version mainly bcuz they spent 4-5 years tailoring it for the PS3.

  • william

i traded my ps3 for a halo 3 edition xbox 360, 3 controllers, 2 recharge kits, 1 game and $100. i got tired of ps3′s lack of add on content and wanted to play downloads for games like fallout 3 now…not 4 months from now. i still dont trust the 360 system due to RROD but the system i traded for was owned and played before me without any problems.
needless to say i do miss the ps3 browser, reliability and free downloads but i will stick with 360 due to the fact that i know i will get add on content ps3 either wont get, or will get a year or 2 after release becuase satansoft get exclusive deals for some reason. i miss my PS3 dearly, but i am enjoying my added content on 360 not yet available on ps3.

  • Ray

you post makes absolutly no sense. Enjoy your 10 disc package, swapping all those discs will be fun. NOT!

  • Ray

no one cared cause there was no other option. Now there is an option and i prefer not to have to switch discs. Blue Ray over rated? you must be one of those people who cant/doesn’t pay attention to detail. its okay, your not alone, i happen NOT to be one of them, but they have a place were you might feel comfortable. Its called the Special Olympics. jk!

  • Ray

agreed. The PS3 time to reign has come. lol With the number of AAA exclusives coming out Xbox cant hold a candle to it. I mean comeon! GT PSP has double the amount of cars as Failza 3. How embarrasing. People dont want to admit it. The Xbox is great for multiplatform games but the farther we get into this generation the more people will start to notice the lack of quality games the Xbox has to offer. Even multiplatform games are starting to look cheap and dull compared to PS3s exclusives.

  • skunk

ps3 for sure developed for ps ill stick with it but also the fact xbox only supports up to 720p vs ps3 blue ray 1080p and with 50 gigs of disk space no need for changing crap

  • mikeisbored

    lol!

  • Ben

I own both consoles, and i udnerstand everybody point of views.

for me i did purchase the PS3 mainly for key A games liek Fianl fantasy etc, but i might actually go and buy the 360 version.

The excuse for swapping disks is pretty lame you have to swap disks when u want to change game right? and you will have to change the disks after a minimum 10 hours or so, it aint like your constantly getting of your backside ;)

I will admit i do prefer the 360 to the PS3 for certain reasons and my friends, i know alot of them will be buying on 360 and i will most probably be in party chat talking to them comparing to them our reviews, so yeah 360 will most probably be the version i pick.

I will probably pick up Ps3 version later, maybe they will package it with final fantasy 13 verses. which ill be happy with and both sony Microsoft and square will be happy :)

  • jimbone

LOL,”Had” its time in the limelight. Isn’t it still ahead of PS3?

  • Cielo

Are you serious. Sony has been selling PS3 at a lose since release while M$ makes you pay for an online service that could easily be given to you for free.

  • kruce

ps3 money obsessive? I though ms is like that because they came out with a broken console, RROD, scratches dvd’s, now you can buy the consoles almost for the same price, only with the ps3 you will get blu-ray and no charges for online gaming. I also own them both, but FF13 will be played on my ps3, just because it will come out on blu-ray

  • kruce

blu-ray overrated? common dude, it’s just a big plus bones, no swapping dvd sounds like a dream come true, with ff7 in 1997 we had no problem with it, but hey, it’s 2009 now, swapping discs is old school, and blu-ray took over de movie world, like dvd took over vhs, blu-ray is taking over dvd. Nothing wrong with that, don,t you think

  • Lord Malik

I own both consoles. Yes the Playstation is the original platform the game came out on. I had this game on the playstation 2. Quit playing for a year. Bought a PS3 and a 360. The I have found that Xbox Live has a better community than PS3 so most online games are are better in a sense. They both have great grafix. Playstation 3 offers a BluRay player that is awesome and also have a web browser to browse the internet. Xbox seems to be more driven to keep it’s gamers with in its own bubble of live so there is one downfall for Xbox. Xbox does outperform the playstation seemingly. First of all the discs will be uploaded to the hard drive of xbox 360 so who ever thinks 10 discs will be popped in and out needs to rethink. Good for peeps that have a 120 gig but bad for 20gigers. Playstation on the other hand can save things to External Memory using the usb ports so flashdrives external hard drives = awsome. They both have their pro’s and cons

  • Tenface

Normally I’d agree with you about 360 getting exclusive add on content but you forget that this will be a PS3 exclusive in Japan. It doesn’t make sense for a company to release add on content for only the 360 they’d lose a ton of money.

  • nightrogen

When it comes to games like this, buy it for the system it was designed for. Examples are Dragon Age Origins (which was designed for PC) Bayonetta (which was designed for xbox 360.

Basically if you play it on anything else the experience, and the quality will be lessened

  • Whatever

Man, Ray loves to have sexual relations with his PS3. Swapping discs is so 1997. What you do when you want to play another game. I know! Get of your butt. Dude, your love for Sony is so blind. You should just be their official prostitute because you probably good with that already on the streets with truckers at the gas station. Maybe they can pay you with a copy of FF13.

When the game hits stores, we’ll see. Until then BR is another expensive piece of uselessness like Laserdisc. And one version works better because you have to copy the whole thing to the HDD, then who cares about it being 1 disc. That defeats the purpose of 1 disc.

  • Tony

I don’t think you understand what other people are trying to say here. you have to get up and change new game on every home consoles. but compare one blu-ray to 3-4 dvd discs are different thing. no body like their movie or game stop in the middle of play and ask you to change the media.

“And one version works better because you have to copy the whole thing to the HDD, then who cares about it being 1 disc. That defeats the purpose of 1 disc.”
I don’t think every single xbox out there has 120GB HDD. Square will only give you installation as an option on xbox. on the other hand PS3 will be required and might be like MGS.(3-4 installations are required)

  • LOLERS

    LOL WHAT!!! ?

  • antanooreo

Own both. First priority is PS3. I would like to play it on 360 for comparisons sake. Will probably get both XD

  • Xavier

Microsoft rips people off. Take their wireless devices for the 360 for example. They are money hungry but I still support them. I play my Xbox more then my PS3 but I will be getting this game for the PS3 considering I have always played FF on Playstation systems (aside from NES and SNES that is).

  • lamont

    ps3 all day!!!

  • paulander

It will definately sell better for the Ps3 ver. , overall that is, because not only is ff13 exculsive in japan, it is also very much exculsive in asia. well, asia is quite a big market if i might add. unless i’m wrong…….

  • Regular Gamer

I brought this game for PS3. I do own both 360 (halo edition) and PS3 and honestly, as of late my 360 serves not purpose to me what so ever. I will admit that at first I rarely played my PS3, but now that GoW3 is coming, FF13 is out, Yakuza (which isn't half bad) and I still play MGO (not that bad either) 360 has become rather a box that gathers dust. Honestly I haven't signed on to LIVE in like 2 months. PS3 is starting to pick up a lot of steam, where as 360 is starting to lose some steam. None the less I think they are both great systems, and to each its own.

  • FF Fanatic

    FIRST OFF…

The Final Fantasy series is originally a NINTENDO franchise that was bought out by Square Soft right after the release of Final Fantasy VI. Then Microsoft became a "Partner Franchise" after the release of Final Fantasy X.

Second, who really cares what platform its on? It's going to be the same game regardless of PS3 or 360. No storyline differences, no playability changes, no "exclusive" DLC, ANYTHING.

The only thing that MIGHT, MAYBE, IN RARE OCCURRENCES, be different between the PS3 and 360 versions would be the quality of HD. Sometimes you might get a bad burn of the game and get maybe a few very minor HD quality differneces that won't even be noticeable with people who don't play in HD.

So why not just stop arguing over "which version is superior" and enjoy this amazing game? :D

  • Piisuke

Uhmmm, I either love your bad attempt at trolling, or I pity your complete ignorance.

Final Fantasy was NEVER a Nintendo franchise. Squaresoft has always been the owner of Final Fantasy. The reason Final Fantasy VII and onwards were released on Sony's Playstation and Playstation 2, was because at the time of the PSX, Sony offered discs, instead of the cartridges of the Nintendo 64. The discs contained more data to be written on, as well as giving a handy small form of media, unlike the outdated clunky cartridges.

Microsoft never became a partner franchise of Final Fantasy. What gave you that stupid impression? If it were the case, why was the Xbox missing out on Final Fantasy XII then?

Square Enix, a fusion of Squaresoft and Enix (known for Valkyrie Profile, Star Ocean and Dragon Quest (a.k.a. the franchise Final Fantasy was based on)) are still the sole owner of Final Fantasy. Microsoft might have had a deal with Square Enix with certain exclusive games, but certainly not a partnership for Final Fantasy.

As for what game is better? Well, from various reviews it seems that everything is equal, apart from the graphics, which are better on the PS3. The reason is, Final Fantasy XIII was made for the PS3 and was then ported to the X360. So, with everything on a tie, gameplay, story, music, etc, the tie-breaker is the visual aspect of the game, which is in the PS3's favor. This means that the PS3 version wins this battle, plus the PS3 owners have the prospect of Final Fantasy XIII Versus coming exclusively.

  • Tri-Edge Fanboy

Well I have gotten it for the PS3 because it was the natural choice for me. Also though that FF Fanatic was right in that FF was originally developed of the Nintendo system there's just something special about it being on the PS system. I mean hell I could talk about FFVII all I want, but the plain and simple fact is that to me the 360 just doesn't feel like a console that'll make any RPGs special to me. I mean i've also played the other RPG games like Star Ocean 4-Last Hope and Tales of Vesperia for the 360,and I love those series btw,on the 360 and it just didn't feel right to me. Hell even my friend who is a BIG 360 fan told me that he was gonna get FFXIII for the 360,but it did not feel right to him. So instead he got it for the PS3. In my opinion there's something about the PS3/FFXIII that feels somehow right to alot of FF fans out there. But either way that's my opinion about this subject.

  • K-znl

i guess 4 ps3, cuz it has only 1 disc, and the is not compresed like the 360 version
